Warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean cool as they rise over the mountains, releasing the moisture they contain as torrential rains, leaving almost no water to fall on the arid interior of the continent.

Mystery of the Himalayas solved

The mystery of why the Himalaya mountains and the Tibetan plateau are the highest in the world has at last been answered, with the discovery of a gigantic chunk of rock slowly sinking towards the centre of the Earth.

The discovery of the missing mantle - the cold, heavy rock beneath the crust - was revealed last week by Professor Wang-Ping Chen at the University of Illinois, whose team used more than 200 super-sensitive seismometers strung across the Himalayas, from India deep into Tibet.

Some scientists have even suggested that the rise of the Himalayas could have triggered the Ice Age by increasing the total amount of global rain and removing vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the air.

If the process of marine sedimentation can be related to the modern mountains and drainage system then there is hope that ancient sediments can be used to reconstruct what the mountains looked like in the geologic past.

The marine sedimentary record can be used to reconstruct the erosion of the Himalayas and Tibet since the start of India-Asia collision.

Though the Federal Communications Commission rejected its initial efforts to bring "fast, free, and family-friendly broadband to 95 per cent of the US population," Silicon Valley startup M2Z Networks has vowed to fight on. Company co-founder and CEO John Muleta is even threatening legal action against the commission - which happens to be his former employer.

M2Z isn't the only one showing interest in this particular piece of wireless real estate. The FCC has also rejected a free broadband application from a company called NetfreeUS, and Google has suggested the spectrum could be used for the sort of open internet access it's calling for on the 700-MHz band.

Using certain Firefox addons, such as the popular Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn addons, could leave your computer open to hackers, according to security expert and Indiana University graduate student in informatics Christopher Soghoian. Thankfully, tools such as NoScript, Greasemonkey, and AdBlock Plus are safe. Problems can arise, says Soghoian, because of the way the likes of the Facebook addon is updated via an external server rather than Firefox’s parent system Mozilla.

Missouri - The little boy who toddled into Kansas City's train station behind his mother spotted the pretty pile of coloured sand on the floor and could not resist.

Slipping under a protective rope, he danced all over the sand, ruining the carefully crafted picture.

Never mind that it was the creation of eight Tibetan monks who had spent two days cross-legged on the floor, meticulously pouring the sand into an intricate design as an expression of their Buddhist faith.

"He did a little tap dance on it, completely destroying it," said Lama Chuck.

"We didn't get despondent. We have three days more. So we will have to work harder."

Scientists Find Clue In Mystery of the Vanishing Bees

The virus identified in the healthy Australian bees is Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) — named that because it was discovered by Hebrew University researchers.

Although worker bees in colony collapse disorder vanish, bees infected with IAPV die close to the hive, after developing shivering wings and paralysis. For some reason, the Australian bees seem to be resistant to IAPV and do not come down with symptoms.

But the study released Thursday on the Science Express Web site, operated by the journal Science, cautioned that collapse disorder is likely caused by several factors.

“There are no cases … in Australia at all,” entomologist Dave Britton of the Australian Museum told the Sydney Morning Herald last month. “It is a Northern Hemisphere phenomenon.”
