Primus EtaPower MF Stove: Base Camp Powerhouse

I just returned from a trip to Argentine Patagonia, where I tested the Primus EtaPower MF (multi-fuel) stove. The stove comes with a windscreen, burner base, EtaPower pot, heat exchanger, frying pan, handle, ErgoPump, 0.35-liter fuel bottle, multi-tool for adjustments and a small package of Silicone grease for the fuel pump. A nice additional touch was an insulating storage bag, which not only stored everything in a neat package but also effectively kept my dinner warm when I was off gathering more water or chopping vegetables.

Overall, this is a solid all-around multi-fuel stove. Though I wouldn't bring it on alpine routes, it is a good base camp cooker, especially in areas where white gas is not readily available.

Pros: Boils rapidly; convenient packaging; burned well with gasoline, white gas and kerosene.

Primus MicronLantern Camp Lantern

You may look at camping in a whole new light with the Primus MicronLantern. This backpacking lantern casts off a clean, white light versus the orangey glow most of us are accustomed to with typical lanterns. And frankly, some of us at 3Luxe prefer not to be cast in too clean of a light while camping, given how scary we look after hiking all day. Be that as it may, you'll certainly see clearly with the 70 watts this little lamp puts out via LP gas. This "Best Of" choice weighs only 4.4 ounces, so go ahead and toss another energy bar into your backpack. Though tiny, it's tough, too, thanks to a globe that is made of rustproof wire mesh rather than glass. A built-in igniter means easy lighting, too. Now, if you're one of those who enjoys winter camping, this lantern may not be for you; it works best above 32-degrees. But, hey, who doesn't?

The kitchen feels well built, has a bunch of features is easy to assemble and lightweight. This is an industrious piece of product, we will keep you updated on our tests, but our first look and feel is very positive.

ALTA - Avalanche danger derailed the plans of Kelty and its partners to cap last week's Outdoor Retailer Winter Market with a day of "relationship building" through Cat skiing in Alta's backcountry.
So, instead, a dozen or so outdoorspeople spent a snowy, windy Sunday exploring the increasingly powdery terrain off the High Traverse and Supreme lift, directed to sweet spots by the knowledgeable guys from Alta-based Alaska Mountain Guides.

Even if the weather proved too bountiful for Cat skiing on Sunday, the day of skiing brought together two local companies - Alta Ski Lifts and Alaska Mountain Guides - and four outside operations enticed here by Outdoor Retailer - Kelty and its partners, boot-maker Vasque from Minnesota; Climashield, a thermal insulation company based in Tennessee; and Icelandair, the airline of the small North Atlantic island off the coast of Greenland.

Baby Boot Camp

Sometimes moms need a cheering section to get them up and running. That's where Baby Boot Camp comes in. Founded by Kristen Horler (mom and entrepreneur) Baby Boot Camp is a workout that allows mom to bring baby along and get a terrific total body workout.

"...The showpiece of next year's range from Primus is a new one-man stove called the EtaExpress, which achieves 80% fuel efficiency according to the Scandinavian brand.

“It is not a question of 'how fast will the water boil' but a question of how to save fuel and pack volume. What use is a powerful stove if you have to carry twice as much fuel? On the other hand, what good is a small, super-light stove if you have to carry an additional windscreen and pot?”

That all sounds sensible to us, so what are the facts and figures? Well, the new EtaExpress weighs in at 418g, plus a 230g gas cartridge, which includes a burner with a piezo igniter, windscreen, hard anodised aluminium one litre pot, and a lid that doubles as a pan. If size is an issue as well as weight then the dimensions are 115 x 140 mm. And if general memory loss while cooking things is what's really at stake, well, at least the pot has a non-stick surface:-)

A fluffy start to winter 2008

See, by reading just this far, you can see that to me, the snow is essentially fluffy, white Prozac. I'm not alone either. A quick glance at the Maine Snowmobile Association's trail reports webpage (http://www.mesnow.com/WherestheSnow.html) reflects similar giddiness. Terry, a trail reporter from Shin Pond, writes, "The SNOW GODDESS is really listening this year." Jim Yearwood, from Northern Outdoors in The Forks region, shared that, "We are experiencing the best conditions in years, and the riding is as good as it gets!"

Let it snow, locals say

That's great news for business owners who depend on Maine's snowfall, which for the last couple of years has been sorely lacking.

"Our prayers have been answered," said Suzie Hockmeyer, owner of Northern Outdoors, an outdoor adventure resort in The Forks. "I think people are feeling optimistic. They're not grooming yet, but spirits are up. We have about a foot and we do see snowmobilers out there running -- and cross country skiing to beat the band. It looks like winter."

Hockmeyer said she has 28 free-standing cabins, can serve up to 400 people in the winter, and is right on the ITS 87, but has had disappointing, lackluster seasons for the last two years.

"I think people are anxious to ride; they've got a lot invested in their equipment," Hockmeyer said. "It's nice to have a white Christmas."
