Public and Private in the Blogosphere

"Public and Private in the Blogosphere" is a study of changing conceptions of public and private. In this survey, I am targeting personal bloggers - individuals who record their daily lives on frequently-updated web pages.

In completing this survey, you will answer background questions, questions about your Internet use and blogging habits, and questions tailored to your preferred blogging platform.

Please answer all questions as truthfully and as completely as possible. On each page, you will find a series of questions to answer, with a "Next" button at the bottom to click once you've answered the questions. The entire survey should take you about 30 minutes to complete.

The success of this survey depends on its wide distribution. To that end, I ask that you post a link to the survey to your own blog and bring it to the attention of any other bloggers who might be interested in participating.

Bloggers and podcasters get their own magazine

You'd think that bloggers and podcasters would be happy with their respective media. After all, how much better can it be to have free worldwide distribution of whatever it is you want to say at any moment.

The magazine, which features famous blogger and podcaster Robert Scoble on the cover, has a Web site, of course, on which most of its content will be available for free. And it also has a free podcast edition. Why anyone would pay $79 for a subscription to the print magazine is not entirely clear.

a/s/l? Xerox patent gives the answer

Companies may eventually be able to tell who we are, demographically, based on our Internet usage patterns alone. Xerox has come up with a method by which they can analyze a series of visited web pages in order to determine (at least) a user's gender and age based off of a cache of test cases, as outlined in a recently-awarded patent entitled "User Profile Classification By Web Usage Analysis."

The challenge in putting such a method into practice will be getting large numbers of users to agree to be tracked.

Patrick Henry was sitting just to my left in the Virginia House of Burgesses as the debate raged about the events that had been following the Boston Tea Party.

One doesn’t really step into the past here, or in any of the other historical villages developed after Colonial Williamsburg’s pioneering success.

Reproductions and renovations and innovations intermingle, creating an image of the past so carefully constructed that it is a re-creation in all senses of the word.

Iran to Release 15 Britons Held Since March 23

LONDON, April 4 – Iran’s president said today that the country had “pardoned” and would release the 15 British sailors and marines who have been held there for nearly two weeks.

Speaking at a news conference in Tehran, Mr. Ahmadinejad said that the captives would be taken to Tehran airport immediately after he finished his remarks. “They are free after this meeting, and can go back to their families,” he said.

A letter to...

Your dad and I have chosen peace over joy, which is why you don't exist. Most of the time, sitting in our calm, ordered home, relishing the peace, freedom and all the other perks of childlessness, I'm happy with our decision.

You see, I won't ever know what it is to cuddle you tightly in my arms and feel consumed with a love for you that is so strong that nothing can rival it.

I won't experience you curling into me on the sofa as we look at a picture book together. I won't smell your hair, still damp because you wouldn't let me dry it properly after your bath. I won't marvel at your shining brown eyes, so much like your dad's. Instead I've chosen to fill my lap with the warmth of a cat.

I won't look on with horror as our small, carefully furnished house fills with coloured plastic tat. Feathers, stones and other treasures gathered on Sunday afternoon walks won't ever make it on to our windowsills. The beige sofa will remain blackcurrant-stain free.

Human Scale Video Games

Game Over is one of the art projects developed by the Swiss artist Guillaume Reymond (NOTsoNOISY creative agency). It consists of a series of stop-motion animation movies which revive some of the very first video games. The pixels in these games are replaced by a group of real human-beings that are moving from seat to seat in a theatre during about 4 to 6 hours. Result: three giant human-scale video games. Watch them here.
