2 April 2008, Rome – World rice production is expected to increase in 2008 by 12 million tonnes or 1.8 percent, assuming normal weather conditions, FAO said today. Production increases would ease the current very tight supply situation in key rice producing countries, according to the first FAO forecast for this year. International rice trade is expected to decrease, mainly due to restrictions in main exporting countries.

Social audit is a tool, using which the government departments, implementing agencies, civil society organizations, can monitor, plan, manage and measure the non-financial activities and organization’s social and commercial operations. This is basically a scrutiny of the public utility against its social relevance. The concept of social audit gained momentum only after the 73rd amendment of the constitution relating to the Panchayati Raj institutions.

The Division of Agricultural Chemicals was established on November 14, 1966. During the span of about 39 years, the Division has generated useful information on pesticide development, formulation, safety evaluation, analysis and biotic and abiotic transformations. It handles several sponsored research projects supported by the national and international funding agencies. The Coordinating cell of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pesticide Residues is also located in the Division.. It serves as a link between the Division and similar other departments in various ICAR institutes/ agricultural universities. The Division has been registered as a source of environmental information in the International Directory of Source of the United Nations.

iodine deficiency

Iodine is an essential nutrient required in trace amount and its deficiency in food and water leads to less iodine to thyroid gland, which is the exclusive organ for synthesis of two very important iodine containing hormones T3 (Triiodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine). These hormones are essential for human growth and development. Iodine deficiency occurs primarily due to deficient intake. Unlike other nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin etc. iodine does not occur naturally in foods. Iodine content of the food depends on the soil in which it is grown. Foods grown on soil deficient in iodine are also deficient in iodine. Over the years surface soils have become progressively depleted in iodine because of rains, flooding, deforestation and soil erosion. The situation moreover is likely to worsen with time. Iodine deficiency therefore is function of geologic conditions.
