Brilliant. In the midst of a Wall Street crisis, and with McCain getting hammered for ignoring the middle class, Kristol wants McCain to talk about the former pastorat Obama's former church. Yeah, that will win voters over.

If Democrats are very lucky, McCain will take Kristol's advice.

KRISTOL HAS A PLAN....

Bill Kristol believes his long-time friend, John McCain, is having some trouble, but he devotes his New York Times column today to explaining that McCain still "has a chance" to "surge to victory."

In fact, Kristol has a two-pronged approach to helping the Republican ticket get on track.

Step One involves Sarah Palin.

McCain needs to liberate his running mate from the former Bush aides brought in to handle her --

I'm told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staff's handling of Palin

They're supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday

the notion of "liberating" Palin to begin a series of relentless attacks seems misguided. As Joe Klein noted, "I'd wonder about the shelf-life of Palin's efficacy as an attack dog, especially now that the American people have come to see her as the incredible -- as in not credible -- vice presidential choice that she is."

In an interview with conservative The New York Times columnist William Kristol published Monday, the Alaska governor said there should be more discussion about Wright, Obama's pastor of 20 years at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago

"I didn't know whether (the group's activity) was legal or illegal, but I didn't think I wanted to be associated with them," McCain said in a newspaper interview in 1986.

Singlaub does not recall any McCain resignation in 1984 or May 1986. Nor does Joyce Downey, who oversaw the group's day-to-day activities. "That's a surprise to me," Singlaub said. "This is the first time I've ever heard that. There may have been someone in his office communicating with our office."

"I don't ever remember hearing about his resigning, but I really wasn't worried about that part of our activities, a housekeeping thing," said Singlaub. The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe.

The council's founder, retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain was launching his political career in Arizona. Singlaub said McCain was a supporter but not an active member in the group

Elected to the House in 1982 and at a time when he was on the board of Singlaub's council, McCain was among Republicans on Capitol Hill expressing support for the Contras

I hear many say let's vote out of office anyone who voted yes to the $700b bailout, yet BOTH of these two voted yes and those same people are still considering voting one or the other INTO the highest office. This video was a shocker to my senses since I live in the Inland Empire where the video was filmed and i've seen the foreclosure signs everywhere. I've always wonder how this people could afford this homes and the life style they were carrying. Seeing the american dream thrown in the dumpster is truely sad. And to think that is going to get worse when those adjustable mortages recast in the comming months. Lisa Ling did a fabulous job on this piece as usual, top notch.

Fears are mounting that many Wall Street banks and financial firms will refuse to participate in the US government's $700bn bail-out package, leaving global markets and world economies in a perilous state for months to come.

'There is a growing feeling that banks ... might instead decide to tough it out,' said Thomas Caldwell, chairman and CEO of Caldwell Financial, a $1bn-plus fund manager.

For the past two weeks all eyes in the market have been focused on US Congress and its attempts to pass Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's bail-out package - a bill to allow the US government to buy up to $700bn of toxic mortgage-related assets from American banks, which would in theory free the credit markets and set the gears of global commerce spinning once more

But Wall Street analysts, believe the addition of so many terms to the bill might deter potential participants.

The United States Civil Flag of Peacetime

We the People of the United States,
actually have two national flags, a military flag and a civil flag for peacetime.
They have several important distinctions and meanings.

Almost all Americans think of the Stars and Stripes "Old Glory" as their only flag.

And IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!

Through usage and custom, horizontal stripes had become adopted for use over military posts, and vertical stripes adopted for use over civilian establishments. The Civil Flag, intended for peacetime usage in custom house civilian settings, had vertical stripes with blue stars on a white field. By the Law of the Flag, this design denoted civil jurisdiction under the Constitution and common law as opposed to military jurisdiction under admiralty/military law.

Although intended just for Customs house usage, the new Civil Flag became adopted by both customhouses and merchants, and others who could afford them, to show their civilian nature and not under military control.

Tina Fey reprised her role as Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin during a Saturday Night Live spoof of Thursday's debate.

Rapper and actress Queen Latifah played the role of moderator Gwen Ifill of PBS while cast member Jason Sudeikis spoofed Palin's Democratic opponent Sen. Joe Biden.

This is Fey's third skit parroting Palin's gaffes. SNL opened this season with a spoof of Palin and Sen. Hillary Clinton giving a press conference denouncing sexism in the media.

Several weeks later, Fey mocked Palin's highly ridiculed interview with CBS' Katie Couric.

In the latest episode of Fey's comic crusade against Gov. Palin, Fey spoofed the governor's stance on same-sex marriage, climate change as the "end of days," and being a "maverick."

"But don't think I don't tolerate gay people, because I do, I tolerate them with all my heart," Fey said. "And I know quite a few, too, not personally, but I know of them."

Just compare this recording of Palin in Alaska in 2006 to what you heard last night. Ask yourself where the folksiness is. See how many times she says "doggone" in 2006. Or "betcha". Or "Joe Six-Pack". Make up your own mind. In my judgment she is the biggest fraud we have seen in national politics in generations. She makes the Clintons look honest, and Nixon look as if he has nothing to hide.

where Andrew Sullivan claims that all the folksy “you betchas” that come from her mouth are not her normal way of speaking.

I’ve listened to the tape

and I’m not sure: she’s was then at least a little bit folksy.

But the idea of her being coached into adding all these down home verbal tics is intriguing: Gidget from Fargo may be a complete invention! If that proves to be true, (and McCain wins) it will prove to be one of the most extraordinary maneuvers in the history of American elections.

Stuffed into the 451- page bill are more than $1.7 billion worth of targeted tax breaks to be doled out for a sty full of eyebrow-raising purposes over the next decade.

The special provisions include tax breaks for:

* Manufacturers of kids' wooden arrows - $6 million.
* Puerto Rican and Virgin Is- lands rum producers - $192 million.
* Wool research.
* Auto-racing tracks - $128 million.
* Corporations operating in American Samoa - $33 million.
* Small- to medium-budget film and television productions - $10 million.

Another measure inserted into the bill appears to be a bald-faced bid aimed at winning the support of Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), who voted against the original version when it went down in flames in the House on Monday

- a $223 million package of tax benefits for fishermen and others whose livelihoods suffered as a result of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill

Also, several federal income-tax breaks due to expire will now be extended through 2009.

Meatless Loaf

1 cup rice

1 cup peanuts crushed

1 cup cottage cheese

1 egg

1 tablespoon oil

1 teaspoon salt

Combine all the ingredients together. bake in a loaf pan for 30 minutes or until loaf is good and set.

Rumford Five Minute Pastry

2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon rumford baking powder

3/4 cup shortening

1 egg yolk

ice water

Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder; then cream the shortening in a bowl as for cake, As soon as it is light and creamy, add the sifted flour, mixing it in with a knife, not touching with the hands. Beat the yolk of egg, and add a little ice water to it just enough to moisten the pastry - probably 2 tablespoons. Use no more than needed to make a firm dough. Roll at once on a floured board, Bake in hot oven 475/o about 10 to 12 minutes.

Over the next couple of years, Polk missed payments on the 101-year-old home that she and her late husband purchased in 1970. In 2007, Fannie Mae assumed the mortgage and later filed for foreclosure.

Deputies had tried to serve Polk's eviction notice more than 30 times before Wednesday's incident, Sommerville said. She never came to the door, but the notes the deputies left would always disappear, so they knew she was inside and ambulatory, he said. Sommerville said Akron is creating programs to help people keep their homes. "But what do you do when there's just so many people out there and the economy is in the shape that it's in?"

He added that many businesses and individuals have offered to help Polk.

Two days after a 90-year-old Ohio woman shot herself as deputies tried to evict her from her foreclosed home, Fannie Mae has decided to forgive the delinquent loan and give her the house outright, CNN reports.

"We're going to forgive whatever outstanding balance she had on the loan and give her the house," said Fannie Mae spokesman Brian. "Given the circumstances, we think it's appropriate."

Addie Polk of Akron is listed in critical condition at Akron General Medical Center. She shot herself at least twice in the upper body Wednesday afternoon as sheriff's deputies came to evict her from the house she has lived in since 1970. CNN has video of a neighbor describing what he saw.

"There's a lot of people like Miss Polk right now. That's the sad thing about it," said Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville. "They might not be as old as her; some could be as old as her. This is just a major problem."
