INTERVIEW WITH MCCAIN HECKLER ADAM KOKESH.

Kokesh, a passionate Ron Paul supporter, is 26 and a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War. He served in Fallujah in 2004, grew up in Santa Fe, and currently lives in Washington, D.C. He has a website.

At the beginning of McCain's speech, Kokesh held up a sign reading, "McCain Votes Against Vets" and yelled, "Ask him why he votes against vets!" I followed as Kokesh was escorted out of the Excel Center by security, handcuffed by local police, and then briefly questioned while security debated whether or not the Secret Service would get involved. They did not. He was then escorted off the premises and allowed to go free. I interviewed him just outside the security gates, where he was greeted happily by antiwar protesters.

Giuliani amazed me, I thought he was only able to say 9-1-1, good for him, he is progressing, I always thought he was more the progressive than he let on this past year or so, seriously look back at his positions prior to the race for the white house. As for Palin, she makes for good tabloid fodder, not much else, she seems a lot more likely to fit in on the Springer show than Oprah, so...

Women under siege in Afghanistan

For the past three months, Afghan female MP Shukria Barakzai has been receiving a letter saying she may be targeted by a suicide bomber in the next six months.

The cryptic government letter contains an intelligence warning that Ms Barakzai's life is under threat and she should be careful. She is one of six MPs getting such a letter these days

"That is all that the government does - send a letter by mail once every month saying my life is under threat. There isn't talk of even providing security

Ms Barakzai says she is being targeted by "various elements" because of her speeches against the country's warlords, her support for women's rights and for her criticisms of Pakistan.

When you consider that two women journalists have been killed recently in and around Kabul, you realise that even women of influence and power in Afghanistan live and work in fear under threats from warlords, the Taleban and other insurgent groups

In a last-minute show of unity, Bay State Ron Paul supporters decided to throw their votes behind Sen. John McCain last night.

About a dozen Massachusetts supporters of the Texas Congressman and GOP upstart decided to back McCain only an hour before the delegates began to cast votes for the presidential pick

“We decided the best course of action was to give a little to get a lot,” said Chris Blanc, a Cambridge resident who supports Paul. “The Massachusetts GOP really wanted to show unanimous support.”

A jury in the United States has found a former top Bush administration aide, David Safavian, guilty of lying about his ties to a disgraced lobbyist.

Safavian was chief of staff at the General Services Administration

The trial was the first connected to the scandal surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff, convicted fraud, tax evasion and bribing public officials.

Abramoff is now helping prosecutors with their corruption inquiry.

Safavian resigned last year from his post as the US government's chief procurement officer.

The jury found Safavian guilty on four counts of lying and obstructing justice.

Once one of the most powerful lobbyists in Washington DC, Abramoff pleaded guilty in January to fraud, tax evasion and bribery charges.

That guilty plea sparked speculation that several members of Congress could potentially find themselves indicted and prompted Democrats to denounce what they called a Republican culture of corruption.

Former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff has been sentenced to four years in prison for corruption.

Abramoff's assistance led to other corruption convictions

Abramoff had pleaded guilty in a Washington court to charges of trading expensive gifts, meals and sports trips in exchange for political favours

The case caused a scandal in Washington and sparked off a wide-ranging public corruption probe

The court had heard how Abramoff made tens of millions of dollars by steering clients to consultants who charged excessive fees and then split the profits with him

In 3,000 hours of interviews with the FBI, he gave information leading to the conviction of a string of lawmakers and high-profile political figures, including one member of Congress

He said that much of the activity of Washington "lives in the loopholes" but that he had "blundered farther than even those excesses would allow

The BBC's Richard Lister in Washington says that the scandal was a disaster for the Republican party

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan and Republican consultant Mike Murphy were on the air today with NBC's Chuck Todd. After the segment ended, their microphones were still live, and caught a scathing discussion between the three of them about the Republican ticket's chances:

Both Noonan and Murphy ridiculed the choice of Sarah Palin as VP. Noonan stated, "it's over" (assuming the chances of the Republicans winning this fall), and then commented about Palin: "the most qualified? No. I think they went for this — excuse me — political bullsh** about narratives. Every time Republicans do that... because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at and they blow it."

Murphy noted toward the end of the video: "The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical."

The joke wasn't merely sexist and mean, it was also homophobic. It is a brutal indictment of John McCain's personal character -- and the character of those who laughed along with him.
