ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) -- You expect a motorist to shell out a little extra cash for a vanity license plate.

But nowhere is the craze for a unique plate more intense than in the United Arab Emirates, the oil-rich Persian Gulf nation that holds the world record for the six most expensive plates.

Here, it's all about how low you can go -- with people battling it out at auctions to win the chance to show off license plates with the lowest digit.

The numbers "5" and "7" have already been snapped up, sold for 25 million dirhams ($6.75 million) and 11 million dirhams ($2.97 million) respectively.

Number 5 fetched $6.75 million, now the UAE is likely to set another record.

Abu Dhabi has held five such auctions, selling 300 plates and raising an astonishing $56 million.

Khouri has his eyes set on snagging the number "1," but he is being practical

"Um, I (will) not pay more than, maximum 15 (to) 20," he said

Fifteen to 20 million?

"Yes," he said, seriously. "Not more."

Scientists have been chasing sand from the Sahara across the Atlantic

Scientists have been sailing across the Atlantic in a bid to track down sand from the Sahara Desert.

The team is trying to find out how the dust is affecting marine biology and, in turn, the ocean's ability to soak up the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

The researchers encountered two large sand storms during their cruise and recorded footage of their dust-drenched experience for the BBC News website.

They followed the sand with the help of satellite images and wind forecasts.

Dr Achterberg said: "We want to ask: 'If the dust levels were increased, what effects might have in the ocean?'

"And we can do this by collecting dust, looking at its chemistry, looking at its biology. Our project is the first real look at how dust is affecting our oceans."

If you have to endure the daily grind of commuting by train, you'll know how unpleasant it can be to be jammed like a sardine into a grumpy crowd of hot, sweaty passengers.

And you might take comfort from the idea that in future, some of the collective body heat can be harnessed and used to reduce energy consumption.

In Sweden, the Jernhusen company, which owns Stockholm's central station, is planning to channel passenger warmth to heat a 13-storey office block being built next to the station.

Heat exchangers in the station's ventilation system will convert the body heat into hot water, which will be pumped into the heating system of the building.

But Jernhusen engineers hope it will meet up to 15% of the heating needs of the building, which will provide about 40,000 square metres of space for offices, hotels, restaurants and shops.

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has arrived in Iraq on a surprise visit as a United Nations goodwill ambassador.

The 32-year-old is in Baghdad to promote action to help the two million people displaced by the Iraq war.

In an interview with CNN, Jolie called for more to be done to help Iraqi families driven from their homes.

She had lunch with US troops and held a meeting with US General David Petraeus, senior diplomats and Iraq's minister for displaced people.

The actress also held talks with the UN head of mission Staffan di Mistura and was due to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a US official said.

"There's lots of goodwill and lots of discussion but there seems to be a lot of talk at the moment and a lot of pieces that need to be put together.

"Of the two million internally displaced, it's estimated 58% are under 12 years old. It's a very high number of people in a very, very vulnerable situation and a lot of young kids."

NAACP President: Ron Paul Is Not A Racist
Linder says Paul being smeared because he is a threat to the establishment

Austin NAACP President Nelson Linder, who has known Ron Paul for 20 years, unequivocally dismissed charges that the Congressman was a racist in light of recent smear attempts, and said the reason for him being attacked was that he was a threat to the establishment.

"Knowing Ron Paul's intent, I think he is trying to improve this country but I think also, when you talk about the Constitution and you constantly criticize the federal government versus state I think a lot of folks are going to misconstrue that....so I think it's very easy for folks who want to to take his position out of context and that's what I'm hearing," said Linder.

Asked directly if Ron Paul was a racist, Linder responded "No I don't," adding that he had heard Ron Paul speak out about police repression of black communities and mandatory minimum sentences on many occasions.

The Bush administration will notify Congress on Monday of its intent to sell $20 billion in weapons, including precision-guided bombs, to Saudi Arabia, moving up the announcement to coincide with the president’s arrival in Riyadh, The Associated Press has learned.

Despite vocal opposition to the deal from some lawmakers, the State Department, which last month said it would delay the notification until Jan. 15 at the earliest, will announce the proposed sale on Jan. 14, said a senior official with knowledge of the decision.

The official said the new timing was "appropriate" and "symbolic" as it would come within hours of Bush's arrival in Saudi Arabia, the penultimate stop on his current Middle East trip. Air Force One is scheduled to land in Riyadh on Monday after a stop in Dubai.
