According to opinion polls, the majority of US consumers want GM labelling, but the state of Oregon GM labelling proposal is defeated after a $5m dollar TV advertising campaign, paid for by the biotech industry. GM foods are supposed to be safe, but how trustworthy is the regulation by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) when there are no compulsory safety tests, and when a number of FDA officials are former biotech company employees?

Certain US officials are beginning to threaten a WTO trade dispute with the EU over GM foods. Pressure is applied to several countries - and Britain is about to make its decision on the commercial growing of GM crops.

SEEDS OF TROUBLE

A spectacular backlash, including threats against a scientist. A $150,000 grassroots campaign is crushed by a $5million corporate counterblow. Whole countries have changed policies, and we may be next. The link? GM foods, and the backers of agricultural biotechnology.

In the space of seven years, genetically modified crops have made huge inroads into US agriculture. 80% of soybeans planted have been modified to withstand the herbicide "Round-Up" which is used to control weeds. And one third of the corn crop has now been engineered to resist a major insect pest, the European corn borer.

Supporters of genetical modification say that these seeds are good for the farmer because they reduce labour and increase yields, and good for the environment because they require fewer pesticides and herbicides.

Opponents see it differently - they say that no one can predict the long term impact of GMOs on other plant life and on the health of the soil. There's some evidence of irrevocable soil bacteria adaptation already. They also object to the patents and licensing agreements which, they maintain, deprive farmers of control over their livelihoods.

Where things are now

In March 2004 the government gave the go-ahead for a certain variety of GM maize to be grown in the UK. This decision was based on the outcome of trials of certain GM crops on UK farms conducted since 1998, as well as a scientific review, an economic study and a public consultation on the issue.

However, Bayer Cropscience, the company that got approval to grow its maize, announced in March 2005 that it was giving up plans to cultivate the maize in the UK because the government imposed too many demands.

This has little bearing on the government’s stance – it will still review the suitability of growing GM crops commercially on a case-by-case basis. There are no GM crop applications due for approval in the near future. The next round of applications to be considered by the government will be in April 2006.

Against GM crops: Green groups, organic farmers and other campaigners point to a range of environmental and health hazards. They argue that GM crops:

Could increase herbicide and pesticide use: Pesticide and herbicide tolerance could mean that farmers spray their crops more liberally – so increasing the risk of pesticide residue in food, according to a Soil Association policy document. Research from the US in 2002 also showed increased herbicide use on GM maize.

Could damage non-GM farmers: Cross-contamination of non-GM fields could affect farmers with GM-free status and destroy their trade, argues Friends of the Earth. Its briefing lists evidence of cross-contamination. A 2003 government report on cross-pollination of certain crops and wild plants revealed significant contamination – but the importance of these findings was played down by another government committee.

Have unpredictable health risks: GM crops could be harmful to human health, according to a report by an activist group, Scientists for Global Responsibility. A Food Standards Agency (FSA) study showed that antibiotic-resistant genes can cross from our food to our stomach, possibly making antibiotics ineffective. The FSA says there is little risk of antibiotic resistance, but the Soil Association disputes this claim.

Won't help feed the developed world: The cause of hunger isn’t scarcity of food but the distribution of grain says Oxfam, in its position statement on GM crops.

Mainly benefits big biotechnology companies: Companies control patents on seeds so farmers lose control over seed production, according to a briefing by Genewatch.

Could affect biodiversity: Using herbicide on resistant crops could lead to fields being cleared of weeds, removing food sources for wildlife, according to Genewatch. The latest government GM crop trials in the UK showed detrimental effects on local wildlife.
