It was during this time that Florence gained the nickname 'The Lady of the Lamp' because she was continually checking all parts of the hospital day and night and at night she needed the lamp. In 1855 Queen Victoria wrote to Florence to thank her for all that she had done.

When Florence was sixteen years old her life was changed. God spoke to her and told her that she had a task that He wanted her to do. Whatever anyone would think of such an event, it was real to Florence. She now knew that her life had a purpose, and that whatever would happen would be in God's will and timing.

Florence then wanted to serve as a nurse in a local hospital. Nurses had a very different role at that time and were no more than cleaners. Even maids and servants looked down on them. Her father refused to allow Florence to go to the hospital.

In a letter Florence wrote 'We have four miles of beds eighteen inches apart'.

In 1907 Florence Nightingale, now blind, received the Order of Merit award.

Gina maintains a 3.9 overall GPA and did very well on the first few philosophy class assignments, her grades in the philosophy course dropped significantly after the question of God’s existence and attributes became the focus of class discussion. Gina read the assigned materials and participated in class discussions, presenting traditional philosophical arguments on whether God exists and whether He possesses certain characteristics such as being all-knowing or all-good. However, Gina was unwilling to state that she would reconsider her personal religious beliefs on God’s nature and existence, and her grades suffered as a result.

Gina was posed with the difficult choice of either violating her religious beliefs by publicly declaring, “I am Gina. I am not free because I am determined” or being penalized by failing to receive extra points like her classmates.

Gina chose to adhere to her faith because she could not, in good conscience, make that statement.

One day after the pro-homosexual "Day of Silence" in 2007, administrators at Neuqua Valley, Illinois, High School ordered senior Heidi Zamecnik to cover the message "Be Happy, Not Gay" on her T-shirt -- although students had been allowed to wear T-shirts with messages celebrating homosexuality the previous day.

A federal appeals court is upholding a student's right to wear a T-shirt that promotes a Christian viewpoint on the issue of homosexuality.

In the latest battle between church and state, a church's right to choose whom it employs is running headlong into the state's authority to protect workers from alleged age discrimination.

"Their legal argument is that the state really doesn't have any jurisdiction over Catholic schoolteachers who carry out the mission of the church," Johnson points out. "And that's what they're saying should apply here."

Johnson warns that there is concern over a "growing encroachment [on] church autonomy, where the government is trying to meddle in the affairs of faith communities and organized religions."

The University of Virginia misinterpreted the First Amendment and violated students' right to free speech when it denied funding to a Christian magazine, the Supreme Court decided Thursday in a 5-4 vote.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, in the majority opinion, said U.Va. created "a sweeping restriction on student thought and student inquiry" that "would risk fostering a pervasive bias or hostility to religion."

"We have crossed a critical threshold in the fight for religious liberty," said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice in Virginia Beach, which had filed briefs supporting both the student magazine and the KKK. "The message is clear: Religious speech or speakers must be treated exactly the same way as any other group."

Some religious groups hailed the ruling, together with another decision Thursday permitting the Ku Klux Klan to erect a cross at an Ohio park, for expanding opportunities for public expressions of faith.

Indeed, the state awarded him $1,125 in 1999 for his freshman year at Northwest College, a Kirkland school affiliated with the Assembly of God denomination.

But not long into his first year, Davey's scholarship vanished. He had committed the one unpardonable sin that would disqualify him from state aid: He would major in pastoral ministries and intended to become a minister.

Now he may get his scholarship money and a religious degree after all. A federal appeals court yesterday sided with Davey, 22, saying that the state law violated his constitutional right to practice his religion.

The leader of the Italian Democratic Party, Walter Veltroni, today proposed the creation of an 'Organization of Religions Nations' Rome-based, and said that the idea' liked 'by both the secretary of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, as Pope Benedict XVI.

But according to The Seattle Times, concerns have been raised over that particular gathering. The newspaper reports that Melissa Jones -- a Christian parent -- challenges the idea that a spiritual leader can "deliver a completely secular message," as the schools and organizers say the exiled leader will. Another parent, Becky Tilev, tells the Times it is unfair that the district tiptoes around her Christian faith, yet appears to have no problems busing students in to hear the leader of another religion. And she feels uncomfortable that the Dalai Lama will be introduced as "his holiness."

Hiram Sasser, the director of litigation with the Liberty Legal Institute, says there is no cause for concern -- at least legally. The attorney points out that U.S. Supreme Court rulings have made it clear that school buses and government buses can be used to transport children to religious education and activity.

Court rules majority student vote on funding can be biased

By ruling in favor of two students on the State University of New York Albany campus who filed suit, a federal appeals court has agreed that allocating mandatory funds from college student fees by referendum, or majority rule, treats some student groups unfairly.

Attorneys for Alliance Defense Fund, which served as counsel for Amidon and Barlow, say the decision also affirmed that the referendum process effectively excluded conservative, Christian, and other minority student groups from receiving funds other groups receive because it boils down to a "popularity contest."

Publishing house, ministries join forces to get weatherproof Bibles to troops

The Outdoor Bible, a waterproof, tear-resistant, and durable copy of God's Holy Word. The publishing company has kicked off a project called "Light of the World 2007," which allows people to send copies of Bibles to troops overseas. The Bibles can be purchased on a special website; and through a partnership with the North American Mission Board and Campus Crusade for Christ, they are then delivered to troops.

His comment was, I love it best because it fits right in my cargo pocket. I can carry it with me anywhere I go, and when I have five or ten minutes in between duties, I've got the Word of God with me that I can pull out and be encouraged by it, and involve my mind in reading," says Bardin.
