So why do women's garments button from the left?

This is an example in which history seems to matter. When buttons first appeared in the 17th century, they were seen only on garments of the wealthy. At that time it was the custom for rich men to dress themselves and for women to be dressed by servants.

Having women's shirts button from the left thus made things easier for the mostly right-handed servants who dressed them. Having men's shirts button from the right made sense not only because most men dressed themselves, but also because a sword drawn from the left hip with the right hand would be less likely to become caught in the shirt. Today, virtually no women are dressed by servants, so why is buttoning from the left still the norm for women?

In economics, a norm, once established, resists change.

<clipSource>http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=548730&in_page_id=1879</clipSource>

Reading Fiction Improves Social Abilities

clipped by: Sheroug

Clip Source: www.sixwise.com

Those Who Read Fiction Better at Reading People

"Books say: she did this because.
Every Action has an equal and an opposite reaction?
Similarly, every proverb has an equal and an opposite proverb!
There always exist two sides of the same coin!
U be the judge…

All good things come to those who wait.

It ain’t over ’till it’s over.

Practice makes perfect.

BUT

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Silence is golden.

BUT

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

You’re never too old to learn.

BUT

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

BUT

One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

BUT

Out of sight, out of mind.

Too many cooks spoil the broth.

BUT

Many hands make light work.

Hold fast to the words of your ancestors.

BUT

Wise men make proverbs and fools repeat them.

OneLook's reverse dictionary lets you describe a concept and get
back a list of words and phrases related to that concept.
Your description can be a few words,
a sentence, a question, or even just a single word. Just type it into
the box above and hit the "Find words" button. (Keep it short to
get the best
results.) In most cases you'll get back a list of related
terms with the best matches shown first.

Tags: dictionary, website, internet

<clipSource>http://www.onelook.com/reverse-dictionary.shtml</clipSource>

Gore busted using fictional footage.

clipped by: willhelm
clipper's remarks: I guess it is appropriate since his work is fiction.

Clip Source: newsbusters.org

On Friday, it was revealed by ABC News that one of the famous shots of supposed Antarctic ice shelves in the film was actually a computer-generated image from the 2004 science fiction blockbuster "The Day After Tomorrow." of ancient Rome, even of the ancient world. On that date Julius Caesar
crossed the Rubicon River, committing himself and his followers to
civil war. Few, if any, historians doubt that the event happened. On
the other hand, numerous skeptics claim that the Gospels of Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John are myth and have no basis in historical fact.
Yet, as historian Paul Merkley pointed out two decades ago in his
article, "The Gospels as Historical Testimony," far less historical
evidence exists for the crossing of the Rubicon than does for the
events depicted in the Gospels:

Merkley observed that those skeptics who either scoff at the historical
reliability of the Gospels or reject them outright as "myth" do so
without much, if any, regard for the nature of history in general and
the contents of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in particular.

Tags: gospel, bible, scriptures, catholic, christianity

<clipSource>http://insightscoop.typepad.com/2004/2008/04/are-the-gospels.html</clipSource>

Atheism and Secular Humanism are RELIGIONS

clipped by: rvnurse2b
clipper's remarks: The censoring of Christians by atheists or secular humanists IS religious discrimination!

Clip Source: www.afa.net

The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that prison officials erred because they “did not treat atheism as a ‘religion.’” “Atheism,” said the court, “is [the inmate’s] religion, and the group that he wanted to start was religious in nature even though it expressly rejects a belief in a supreme being.”

The Supreme Court has said that a religion need not be based on a belief in the existence of a supreme being. Yes, they're a long way away from the U.S. But most foodstuffs operate in a global market. When the cost of wheat soars in Asia, it will do the same here.

Reality: Food prices are already rising here much faster than the returns you are likely to get from keeping your money in a bank or money-market fund. The prices of many underlying raw materials have risen much more quickly still. Wheat prices, for example, have roughly tripled in the past three years.

Tags: economics, food, bad_news, news, opinion, money, international

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120881517227532621.html?mod=pj_main_hs_coll</clipSource>

chocolate covered oreos

clipped by: rvnurse2b

Clip Source: www.teachsoap.com
