Petrol stations have started to run dry as thousands of motorists ignored appeals not to panic-buy ahead of a strike this weekend at one of Britain's biggest oil refineries.

A number of filling stations in the Edinburgh area reported severe shortages as queues of cars formed and customers reportedly stockpiled fuel by filling up jerry cans before paying.

There were also reports of petrol stations running out of diesel. The shortages come after a Government minister warned he could not gaurantee that "every garage forecourt would have petrol".

In Glasgow, some garages had imposed limits and several had completely runout of unleaded fuel.

India's tallest woman, who stands 7ft 2in, claims her baby has grown to 3ft 2in in only 10 months.

Svetlana Singh says she hopes her child Karan, who already weighs three-and-a-half stone, (49 pounds), will be the tallest man in the world.

Speaking in the family's home in Meerut, outside Delhi, Mrs Singh told how the hungry boy needs feeding an astonishing 20 times a day. He just doesn't stop eating and never stops growing," she said. He is only ten-months-old and wears clothes designed for five-year-olds."

"Karan has never fitted into baby clothes, even when he was first born he was 2ft 2in tall and was the same size as a normal two-year-old."

The couple, who are both doctors of naturopathy, a holistic medicine, met at university where their size immediately attracted them to each other.

It was during this time that Florence gained the nickname 'The Lady of the Lamp' because she was continually checking all parts of the hospital day and night and at night she needed the lamp. In 1855 Queen Victoria wrote to Florence to thank her for all that she had done.

When Florence was sixteen years old her life was changed. God spoke to her and told her that she had a task that He wanted her to do. Whatever anyone would think of such an event, it was real to Florence. She now knew that her life had a purpose, and that whatever would happen would be in God's will and timing.

Florence then wanted to serve as a nurse in a local hospital. Nurses had a very different role at that time and were no more than cleaners. Even maids and servants looked down on them. Her father refused to allow Florence to go to the hospital.

In a letter Florence wrote 'We have four miles of beds eighteen inches apart'.

In 1907 Florence Nightingale, now blind, received the Order of Merit award.

Before Lily rushed off to school this morning she left me some very detailed instructions for Teddy. It's not the first time she's given me instructions for him, but in the past it's been something like, "Mom, can you sew Teddy's head back on?"

So as proof that I accomplished something today I have photographed Teddy at his various activities.

On that date Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon River, committing himself and his followers to civil war. Few, if any, historians doubt that the event happened. On the other hand, numerous skeptics claim that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are myth and have no basis in historical fact. Yet, as historian Paul Merkley pointed out two decades ago in his article, "The Gospels as Historical Testimony," far less historical evidence exists for the crossing of the Rubicon than does for the events depicted in the Gospels:

Merkley observed that those skeptics who either scoff at the historical reliability of the Gospels or reject them outright as "myth" do so without much, if any, regard for the nature of history in general and the contents of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in particular.

Gina maintains a 3.9 overall GPA and did very well on the first few philosophy class assignments, her grades in the philosophy course dropped significantly after the question of God’s existence and attributes became the focus of class discussion. Gina read the assigned materials and participated in class discussions, presenting traditional philosophical arguments on whether God exists and whether He possesses certain characteristics such as being all-knowing or all-good. However, Gina was unwilling to state that she would reconsider her personal religious beliefs on God’s nature and existence, and her grades suffered as a result.

Gina was posed with the difficult choice of either violating her religious beliefs by publicly declaring, “I am Gina. I am not free because I am determined” or being penalized by failing to receive extra points like her classmates.

Gina chose to adhere to her faith because she could not, in good conscience, make that statement.

His academic prowess and his family's income made him a perfect selection for Washington's Promise Scholarship, which goes annually to more than 6,000 of the state's brightest students who come from modest means. Indeed, the state awarded him $1,125 in 1999 for his freshman year at Northwest College, a Kirkland school affiliated with the Assembly of God denomination.

But not long into his first year, Davey's scholarship vanished. He had committed the one unpardonable sin that would disqualify him from state aid: He would major in pastoral ministries and intended to become a minister.

Now he may get his scholarship money and a religious degree after all. A federal appeals court yesterday sided with Davey, 22, saying that the state law violated his constitutional right to practice his religion.

"Their legal argument is that the state really doesn't have any jurisdiction over Catholic schoolteachers who carry out the mission of the church," Johnson points out. "And that's what they're saying should apply here."

Johnson warns that there is concern over a "growing encroachment [on] church autonomy, where the government is trying to meddle in the affairs of faith communities and organized religions."

The unanimous vote last week by the US Senate to outlaw discrimination against people on the basis of their genetic information is being celebrated by civil-rights groups, which have long campaigned for the safeguards. Personal-genomics companies are also cracking open the champagne — they have a lot to gain from the bill becoming law.

Once enacted, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) will forbid employers and health insurers from using people's genetic information against them in decisions on hiring, firing, promotion and insurance coverage and pricing. The House of Representatives should pass the legislation this week, after which it is expected to be signed into law by President George W. Bush.

The bill bans US employers from collecting genetic information from their employees, and ensures that insurers can't request or require people to take genetic tests.
