The series was orginally designed for use by students in grades 3 through 6 in the social studies, science and environmental curricula and to fulfill the following objectives:

1. To instruct students on the history of the pencil and how it is made today.

2. To show how pencils are used by many kinds of people.

3. To outline the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources.

4. To educate students about forestry management in the United States and elsewhere in the world.

5. To target specific learning skills within each lesson plan.

Truckers and Kids

Truck drivers who travel the country often have no one with whom to share anecdotes and insights. A program called Trucker Buddy International offers such drivers an eager audience. The program pairs truckers and classes, giving students a driver's-eye view of the world and prolific pen pals

Truck drivers might not have soft and cuddly reputations in some circles, but to thousands of schoolchildren, they are friends and confidantes who write exciting letters about cross-country travel.

A non-profit organization called Trucker Buddy International pairs truck drivers with kids in second through eighth grade and with special education students. Truckers write to students about their travels and incorporate math and geography lessons. Students get to practice their letter writing.

Trucker Buddy Tom Hawks visits some of his students.

I guess I was in a funny mood this morning. I was taking attendance and it was looking like we had perfect attendance which is a big deal. It doesn’t happen very often lately. We’ve had a lot of sickness. Anyway I did a quick head count and knew we had perfect attendance, but I was taking roll anyway and I got to this one little character and she said, “I’m not here.” So I said, “Who’s not here?” And she said, “Me.” So I said, “Well if you aren’t here, then I can’t hear you.” So before you know it, they ALL aren’t here. I said, “Great, nobody’s here, I can take a nap.” Now they couldn’t be quiet if their lives depended on it. So the first little noise I heard, I said, “Who’s there, I hear somebody…..” So we played around a bit like that and then got back to work.

This same little girl gets an idea, “I can’t run, I’m not here.”

Little smarty pants.

So I said, “Well, I guess if you aren’t here, you can’t run…….pause ….. or eat lunch.”

After a pause to consider,

“I’ll run.”

If choice mattered, politicians funded by Planned Parenthood would listen to parents. And parents have clearly set out what they want for their children

Nine out of 10 parents agree that being sexually abstinent is best for their child's health and future, with 8 in 10 strongly agreeing.

Eight out of 10 parents think it's important for their child to wait until they're married to have sex, with 6 in 10 strongly agreeing.

Eight out of 10 parents think sex education in public schools should place more emphasis on promoting abstinence vs. contraceptive use.

Two out of three parents believe that promoting alternatives to intercourse (such as showering together and mutual masturbation, which are presented in some comprehensive programs) encourages sexual activity.

Six out of 10 parents think more government funding should be given to abstinence education vs. comprehensive sex education. Only two out of 10 want more funding for comprehensive education.
