Gina maintains a 3.9 overall GPA and did very well on the first few philosophy class assignments, her grades in the philosophy course dropped significantly after the question of God’s existence and attributes became the focus of class discussion. Gina read the assigned materials and participated in class discussions, presenting traditional philosophical arguments on whether God exists and whether He possesses certain characteristics such as being all-knowing or all-good. However, Gina was unwilling to state that she would reconsider her personal religious beliefs on God’s nature and existence, and her grades suffered as a result.

Gina was posed with the difficult choice of either violating her religious beliefs by publicly declaring, “I am Gina. I am not free because I am determined” or being penalized by failing to receive extra points like her classmates.

Gina chose to adhere to her faith because she could not, in good conscience, make that statement.

His academic prowess and his family's income made him a perfect selection for Washington's Promise Scholarship, which goes annually to more than 6,000 of the state's brightest students who come from modest means. Indeed, the state awarded him $1,125 in 1999 for his freshman year at Northwest College, a Kirkland school affiliated with the Assembly of God denomination.

But not long into his first year, Davey's scholarship vanished. He had committed the one unpardonable sin that would disqualify him from state aid: He would major in pastoral ministries and intended to become a minister.

Now he may get his scholarship money and a religious degree after all. A federal appeals court yesterday sided with Davey, 22, saying that the state law violated his constitutional right to practice his religion.

Gina D.’s stated unwillingness to reconsider or abandon her personal beliefs in favor of her Introduction to Philosophy Professor’s preferred viewpoints has led to her receiving poor grades on class assignments. She has also been singled out and derided in online discussions.

While a college professor may encourage students to be informed about viewpoints and arguments that differ from their own, it is inappropriate — and unconstitutional — for a public college professor to make passing a required course (and thus graduation) contingent upon a student’s willingness to express agreement with philosophical viewpoints conflicting with her religious beliefs.

The unanimous vote last week by the US Senate to outlaw discrimination against people on the basis of their genetic information is being celebrated by civil-rights groups, which have long campaigned for the safeguards. Personal-genomics companies are also cracking open the champagne — they have a lot to gain from the bill becoming law.

Once enacted, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) will forbid employers and health insurers from using people's genetic information against them in decisions on hiring, firing, promotion and insurance coverage and pricing. The House of Representatives should pass the legislation this week, after which it is expected to be signed into law by President George W. Bush.

The bill bans US employers from collecting genetic information from their employees, and ensures that insurers can't request or require people to take genetic tests.

Peterson is founder and president of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND), a Los Angeles-based religious group that focuses on helping men fulfill their family responsibilities. Since 2003, his organization has led a boycott against the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which recently wrapped up its annual convention in Detroit. He says it is apparent that the liberal-leaning organization is not the influence it once was.

And the NAACP, says BOND's leader, has sold out the black community with its recent support of the Senate bill that would have given amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Had the bill become law, "it would have taken jobs and education, healthcare away from black Americans," says Peterson -- "[but] the NAACP doesn't care about that. That's why they're not working on the other issues in the black community, like crime and out-of-wedlock birth and abortion and issues that are destroying our community."

The University of Virginia misinterpreted the First Amendment and violated students' right to free speech when it denied funding to a Christian magazine, the Supreme Court decided Thursday in a 5-4 vote.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, in the majority opinion, said U.Va. created "a sweeping restriction on student thought and student inquiry" that "would risk fostering a pervasive bias or hostility to religion."

"We have crossed a critical threshold in the fight for religious liberty," said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice in Virginia Beach, which had filed briefs supporting both the student magazine and the KKK. "The message is clear: Religious speech or speakers must be treated exactly the same way as any other group."

Some religious groups hailed the ruling, together with another decision Thursday permitting the Ku Klux Klan to erect a cross at an Ohio park, for expanding opportunities for public expressions of faith.

Kellum notes public school officials have to understand that if they allow some students to publicly express their viewpoint on an issue, they must allow other students to voice differing opinions on the same topic.

One day after the pro-homosexual "Day of Silence" in 2007, administrators at Neuqua Valley, Illinois, High School ordered senior Heidi Zamecnik to cover the message "Be Happy, Not Gay" on her T-shirt -- although students had been allowed to wear T-shirts with messages celebrating homosexuality the previous day.

A federal appeals court is upholding a student's right to wear a T-shirt that promotes a Christian viewpoint on the issue of homosexuality.

Up and until this relief that we received from the court, Alex was not able to share the Christian viewpoint on this very important issue," he clarifies, "even though you had a whole day set aside -- called the 'Day of Silence' -- in which the school would actually support a message promoting homosexual behavior," Kellum admonishes
