By requiring countries to open up their agriculture market to giant multinational companies, by insisting that countries dismantle their marketing boards and by persuading them to specialize in exportable cash crops such as coffee, cocoa, cotton and even flowers, they have driven the poorest countries into a downward spiral.

In the last thirty years, developing countries that used to be self-sufficient in food have turned into large food importers.

Dismantling of marketing boards that kept commodities in a rolling stock to be released in event of a bad harvest, thus protecting both producers and consumers against sharp rises or drops in prices, has further worsened the situation.

support a country's effort to manage stocks and pricing

promote production and consumption of local crops raised by small,

farms

Tags: economy, trade, i-policy, i-consequences, i-starvation

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/workplace/83457/</clipSource>

10 things grocery stores don't want you to know

clipped by: rvnurse2b

Clip Source: health.msn.com

1. Yes, they're a long way away from the U.S. But most foodstuffs operate in a global market. When the cost of wheat soars in Asia, it will do the same here.

Reality: Food prices are already rising here much faster than the returns you are likely to get from keeping your money in a bank or money-market fund. And there are very good reasons to believe prices on the shelves are about to start rising a lot faster.

The reason? The prices of many underlying raw materials have risen much more quickly still. Wheat prices, for example, have roughly tripled in the past three years.

Tags: economics, food, bad_news, news, opinion, money, international

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120881517227532621.html?mod=pj_main_hs_coll</clipSource>

green Frenzy blames COWS

clipped by: rvnurse2b
clipper's remarks: ok- take care of the earth- don't mess it up when you can preserve it- but lets not go NUTS.

Clip Source: www.onenewsnow.com

The New York Times Magazine on Sunday devoted the entire issue to a "low-carbon catalog" of ideas for the environmentally inclined. However, as Folio magazine notes, it was printed on new, wasteful paper, not recycled pulp.

The villain of the piece? Cows. According to Dr. Solomon, Americans' animal-based foods generate "a third as much as their car produces" in greenhouse gases. Cows come in for even more blame than pigs and other critters, because cows emit copious amounts of methane and nitrous oxide, Solomon said. This means that the bacon in your bacon cheeseburger pales as an environmental menace compared to the cheese and the beef.
