Commodity speculation spread long ago from standard products like oil and gold to anything edible and available for trade on the Chicago Futures Exchange. These days there are futures contracts for everything from wheat to oranges to pork bellies. The futures market is a traditional tool for farmers to sell their harvests ahead of time. In a futures contract, quantities, prices and delivery dates are fixed, sometimes even before crops have been planted. Futures contracts allow farmers and grain wholesalers a measure of protection against adverse weather conditions and excessive price fluctuations. They can also help a farmer plan how much to plant for a given year.

But now speculators are taking advantage of this mechanism.

Petrol stations have started to run dry as thousands of motorists ignored appeals not to panic-buy ahead of a strike this weekend at one of Britain's biggest oil refineries.

A number of filling stations in the Edinburgh area reported severe shortages as queues of cars formed and customers reportedly stockpiled fuel by filling up jerry cans before paying.

There were also reports of petrol stations running out of diesel. The shortages come after a Government minister warned he could not gaurantee that "every garage forecourt would have petrol".

In Glasgow, some garages had imposed limits and several had completely runout of unleaded fuel.

I guess I was in a funny mood this morning. I was taking attendance and it was looking like we had perfect attendance which is a big deal. It doesn’t happen very often lately. We’ve had a lot of sickness. Anyway I did a quick head count and knew we had perfect attendance, but I was taking roll anyway and I got to this one little character and she said, “I’m not here.” So I said, “Who’s not here?” And she said, “Me.” So I said, “Well if you aren’t here, then I can’t hear you.” So before you know it, they ALL aren’t here. I said, “Great, nobody’s here, I can take a nap.” Now they couldn’t be quiet if their lives depended on it. So the first little noise I heard, I said, “Who’s there, I hear somebody…..” So we played around a bit like that and then got back to work.

This same little girl gets an idea, “I can’t run, I’m not here.”

Little smarty pants.

So I said, “Well, I guess if you aren’t here, you can’t run…….pause ….. or eat lunch.”

After a pause to consider,

“I’ll run.”

India's tallest woman, who stands 7ft 2in, claims her baby has grown to 3ft 2in in only 10 months.

Svetlana Singh says she hopes her child Karan, who already weighs three-and-a-half stone, (49 pounds), will be the tallest man in the world.

Speaking in the family's home in Meerut, outside Delhi, Mrs Singh told how the hungry boy needs feeding an astonishing 20 times a day. He just doesn't stop eating and never stops growing," she said. He is only ten-months-old and wears clothes designed for five-year-olds."

"Karan has never fitted into baby clothes, even when he was first born he was 2ft 2in tall and was the same size as a normal two-year-old."

The couple, who are both doctors of naturopathy, a holistic medicine, met at university where their size immediately attracted them to each other.

FIRST: If you have decided the baby bird is really an orphan do NOT leave it on the ground. Many things can get to it and mother is not nor able to get it back in the nest.

SECOND: GET THE BABY WARM. EITHER BY PUTTING IT IN A BASKET OR SMALL BOX WITH KLEENEX AND PUTTING IT ON A HEATING PAD. Put the basket only on half so the baby can move from side to side and self regulate. When the baby is warm to touch or starts to make noise youhave been successful. UNTIL THEN GIVE NOTHING BY MOUTH. AFTER THIS:

If you think you know where the tree is that the baby fell out of, take a small basket put some kleenex in it and nail it to the tree and WATCH FROM A DISTANCE. a mother will feed more than one nest if the baby cries.

2. Get them warm. Put a heating pad under half the box or carrier so if the baby gets to warm or cold it can self regulate. At this point DO NOT FEED OR GIVE ANYTHING. Giving anything to a cold mammal or bird will kill it.

3. Now that the baby is warm you may make a solution of sugar water. 1/2c warm water: 1 tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. stir and very VERY carefully gives only drops every 15 minutes. twice: then every 30 minutes twice and then watch.

DO NOT ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO HANDLE THE ANIMAL: DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER GIVE MILK. OH yes if hungry they will drink it and then later get diarrhea and possibly die.
