The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has just drafted a rule that would consider it abortion when a contraceptive prevents a fertilized egg from embedding itself in the uterine wall. Thus, many types of legal birth control and contraception are now bizarrely classified by the Bush administration as "abortions."

Bloomberg.com explains that the move is a preliminary step in a war on access to contraception in America, being waged by pro-life forces as they simultaneously wait for the overturning of Roe. v. Wade. Bush-appointed Office of Population Affairs head Susan Orr explains that contraception is part of a "culture of death." read more

World's Smallest Snake Discovered

Hedge's has announced the discovery of the world's smallest snake, Leptotyphlops carlae, which grows to only four inches long.

Commonly known as the Barbados Thread Snake

The snake is blind and lays a single, skinny egg which takes up the majority of the mother's body.

The babies are born to half the size of the adult and are as thin as spaghetti.

The Barbados Thread Snake is perfectly suited for hiding in human hair and entering human orifices while you sleep.

Here on Freshome I try to gather all kind of inspiring things for homes from around the internet, and today I’ve found something that is really beautiful and also inspiring but not related to home design or interior design. What I’ve found is a public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in Millennium Park, Chicago, that is called Cloud Gate. The sculpture is shaped like an ellipse, and its legume-like appearance has caused it to be nicknamed “The Bean”. It is made of 168 highly polished stainless steel plates, and stands at 33 feet high, 66 feet long, and 42 feet wide, weighing 110 tons.

From a distance it could be mistaken for a huge drop of mercury, while up close its highly reflective surface captures and transforms the skyline, the downtown cityscape and even the passers-by into a wonderfully warped new vista. The artist, Anish Kapoor, has referred to the sculpture as “a gate to Chicago, a poetic idea about the city it reflects.”

Is a 'Dark Force' Pushing the Universe Apart?

No observation in recent history of science has been more disturbing than the discovery of dark energy in 1998.

Dark energy seems to differ from all forms of energy and matter previously known, in that its not associated with any particles or waves. It is just there.

What happened in 1998 was that observations of supernovas in distant galaxies indicated that the universe was accelerating in that could best be explained by the existence of a dark energy.

Recent measurements with telescopes and space probes of the distribution of mass in M31 -the largest galaxy in the neighborhood of the Milky Way

have shown that a mysterious force—a dark energy—fills the vacuum of empty space, accelerating the universe's expansion.

We don't know what dark energy is, or why it exists.

A new theory of particle physics is required to explain this physical process.

Fish Pedicures???

Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far.

"This is a good treatment for everyone who likes to have nice feet," Ho said.

He said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.

If religion isn't the greatest threat to rationality and scientific progress, what is? Perhaps alcohol, or television, or addictive video games.

People are revered for their capacity to live in a dream world, to shield their minds from factual knowledge and make the major decisions of their lives by consulting voices in their heads that they call forth by rituals designed to intoxicate them.

"You cannot lose by professing belief in God - if He does not exist you lose nothing, and if He does exist, you will be rewarded in the afterlife." Dennett argues that it is better to live as if there is no God, attempting to make the world a rational and better place.

The debate on religion versus science will take place tonight at the British Council.

That’s because scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.

“The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center in College Station.

“We’ve always known that watermelon is good for you, but the list of its very important healthful benefits grows longer with each study.”

Beneficial ingredients in watermelon and other fruits and vegetables are known as phyto-nutrients, naturally occurring compounds that are bioactive, or able to react with the human body to trigger healthy reactions, Patil said.

Marco Iacoboni, a neuroscientist at the University of California at Los Angeles, is best known for his work on mirror neurons, a small circuit of cells in the premotor cortex and inferior parietal cortex. What makes these cells so interesting is that they are activated both when we perform a certain action—such as smiling or reaching for a cup—and when we observe someone else performing that same action. In other words, they collapse the distinction between seeing and doing. In recent years, Iacoboni has shown that mirror neurons may be an important element of social cognition and that defects in the mirror neuron system may underlie a variety of mental disorders, such as autism. His new book, Mirroring People: The Science of How We Connect to Others, explores these possibilities at length. Mind Matters editor Jonah Lehrer chats with Iacoboni about his research.

My eyes were widely spaced and protruding, my nose and mouth were unusually small - rather cute I like to think. My fingers were also fused together. They looked like little mittens.

When I was younger I didn't realise I looked different.

I first became aware that I was not the same as everyone else on my way to senior school one day.

They turned away and then from nowhere turned back and shouted: "Her fingers, her fingers!"

Only two words but they cut deep! What's more, no one on the bus stood up for me, so when I got to school I was very upset.

I realised that if you look different, you will be treated as an outsider

And so last year, I decided to completely transform the way I look - not because I needed to but because I wanted to.

America, founded in secularism as a beacon of eighteenth century enlightenment, is becoming the victim of religious politics, a circumstance that would have horrified the Founding Fathers. The political ascendancy today values embryonic cells over adult people. It obsesses about gay marriage, ahead of genuinely important issues that actually make a difference to the world. It gains crucial electoral support from a religious constituency whose grip on reality is so tenuous that they expect to be 'raptured' up to heaven, leaving their clothes as empty as their minds. More extreme specimens actually long for a world war, which they identify as the 'Armageddon' that is to presage the Second Coming. Sam Harris, in his new short book, Letter to a Christian Nation, hits the bull's-eye as usual:

placed by a ball of fire, some significant percentage of the American population would see a silver-lining in the subsequent mushroom cloud, as it would suggest to them that the best thing that is ever going to happen was about to happen: the return of Christ . . .Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the U.S. government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious. The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religious dogma, should be considered a moral and ¬intellectual emergency. Does Bush check the Rapture Index daily, as Reagan did his stars? We don't know, but would anyone be surprised?
