In August 1999 police saw Rodney Gant pull into the driveway of his Tucson home and arrested him for driving with a suspended license. After handcuffing Gant and locking him in a cruiser, Officer Todd Griffith searched his car, finding a bag of cocaine in the pocket of a jacket on the backseat. When he was asked at an evidentiary hearing why he searched the car, Griffith replied, "Because the law says we can do it."

Not anymore. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court said police may no longer routinely search the vehicles of recently arrested people. It was a refreshing departure from a long line of cases in which the Court has whittled away at the Fourth Amendment's prohibition of unreasonable searches and seizures to make the war on drugs easier to wage.

A rule that gives police the power to conduct such a search whenever an individual is caught committing a traffic offense...creates a serious and recurring threat to the privacy of countless individuals

An Afghan journalist was sentenced to death yesterday after a secret court convicted him showing classmates an article from the Internet that violates the tenets of Islam.

The Associated Press says Sayad Parwez Kambaksh is a student who also works for Jahan-i-Naw in Mazar-i-Sharif. Radio Free Afghanistan says he "was arrested in late October over a controversial article that commented on verses in the Koran that were about women."

The court says it acted in response to complaints from students who saw the article, but media groups tell CNN that the 23-year-old is being punished because his brother, a fellow journalist, has published stories that upset some of the powerful figures who run things in northern Afghanistan.

Sayed Yaqub Ibrahimi "is a very brave reporter and I've never known him to falter," Jean MacKenzie of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting tells the news channel. "But having his brother sentenced to death has made him very, very anxious."

Previously it was assumed there only tiny populations numbering in the low 100s, and the species could go extinct almost at any moment. In 2008 the Irawaddy was listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

The recent scientific discovery has breathed both relief and optimism into the prospects for the species. World Conservation researcher Brian Smith said this of the reversal of fortune: “This discovery gives us great hope that there is a future for Irrawaddy dolphins. Bangladesh clearly serves as an important sanctuary for Irrawaddy dolphins, and conservation in this region should be a top priority.” Researchers also noted that even with the very unexpected and most welcome news of the much larger population’s existence, the dolphins still remain threatened by a variety of factors such as fishing net accidents, climate change, and pollution of their habitats.

Imagine a world where police have the ability to torture from a distance anyone they want at the touch of a button.

Does that sound like something out of a science fiction novel?

It’s not.

Imagine a world where police have the ability to fire pain ray guns at protesters that instantly cause them excruciating pain as soon as they are activated.

NewScientist is reporting that the U.S. Department of Justice is developing two portable "non-lethal" weapons that inflict severe pain from a distance using either microwave technology or laser beams.

Some observers are very upset about this development, as they claim that giving police the ability to instantly torture anyone they want from a distance is a very dangerous thing to do.

Others are applauding the development of these new "non-lethal" weapons as a step away from the use of "lethal" weapons by police.

Mike Donnelly of the Home School Legal Defense Association is warning New Hampshire homeschoolers of HB 367. If passed, the bill would require home schoolers to double the amount of reporting currently required and would allow a school superintendant or principal to determine if the home school program should continue or be terminated.

The legislation has angered many home schoolers who showed up in record numbers when the bill was being debated in Concord. "There were about a thousand home schoolers there. It was a record-breaking crowd, never been that many home schoolers," Donnelly notes. "In fact some of the people at the state house said that they've never seen such a large crowd inside ever."

Donnelly says he and about 100 home schoolers were able to give testimony. "Well if it passed, this would become one of the most restrictive [home school] laws in the country," he adds.

Having witnessed it firsthand, Parris has become “convinced of the enormous contribution that Christian evangelism makes in Africa.” As he puts it, “secular NGO’s, government projects and international aid efforts…alone will not do….Christianity changes people’s hearts. It brings a spiritual transformation. The rebirth is real. The change is good.”

Parris used to believe that the work Christian missions do in Africa was good – they healed, they taught – but thought it a shame that religion had to be part of it.

Now he observes that the converts’ faith “appeared to have liberated and relaxed them. There was a liveliness, a curiosity an engagement with the world…”

While it has seemed an impossible goal for nearly 100 years, scientists now believe that they are on brink of cracking one of the biggest problems in physics by harnessing the power of nuclear fusion, the reaction that burns at the heart of the sun.

In the spring, a team will begin attempts to ignite a tiny man-made star inside a laboratory and trigger a thermonuclear reaction.

At a time when fossil fuel supplies are dwindling and fears about global warming are forcing governments to seek clean energy sources, fusion could provide the answer. Hydrogen, the fuel needed for fusion reactions, is among the most abundant in the universe. Building work on the £1.2 billion nuclear fusion experiment is due to be completed in spring.

The result should be an explosion in the 32ft-wide reaction chamber which will produce at least 10 times the amount of energy used to create it.
