The Rapture Index (omens portending the Rapture) stands at 163, the highest it's been since September 11, 2001 when it peaked at its all-time high of 182. I don't know what the numbers mean either. But I'm not making this up.

Anyway, I'm not worried about 'the Rapture' one little bit... Jesus, he knows me.

I try to limit my magical thinking to occasional moments of vanity and revenge.

But lately I've found myself wishing that if the Rapture is on the level, it would happen soon . . . I mean real soon.

I want it understood that I'm not wishing these folks ill. On the contrary, I'm wishing them what they've always wanted—an eternity of enjoying the unchallenged moral certitude they were never quite able to fully enjoy here on Earth

The Mike Huckabee campaign is said to be re-examining its southern strategy after the candidate was assaulted by a disgruntled squirrel

The rodent was observed scurrying around light fixtures within the gym at Clemson University and then apparently leapt to attack Huckabee

they were relatively certain that revenge was not a motive in that it was not of a species that Huckabee has admitted to eating in the past.

The squirrel was captured, and wrestled to the ground

suffered a number of scratches to the head and bites to his ears

Security was very tight and we are at a loss to explain how the squirrel was able to get in... he had to have help anyway you figure it

DNC Chairman Howard Dean was contacted for a quote on the incident, and had this to say: "I don't profess to know much about squirrels and their behavior, but they're certainly into survival... and Mike Huckabee is arguably one of the biggest nuts there is."

clipper's remarks: Part of an experiment in Brazil in 1957 to increase honey production, a swarm escaped, and began heading North, while interbreeding with Western honeybees along the way, passing on a characteristic aggressive trait, which can make a swarm life threatening. There is both the threat due to their aggressive nature ( Pre-Emptive Strike?), and the threat to the entire beekeeping industry.

Africanized bees are the result of an experiment to increase honey production in Brazil. A swarm of the small, aggressive bees escaped a laboratory in 1957 and headed north. When they mated with native strains, the offspring turned out to be as aggressive as the African parents.

They reached Texas in 1990 and have spread west to California and east to Florida.

The first swarms found in Louisiana were in Rodessa, near Shreveport, in July 2005 and near Lake Charles the following month.

As 2007 draws to a close, you should look back with pride on what you, your fellow troopers, our Iraqi partners, and Iraqi Coalition civilians have achieved in 2007. A year ago, Iraq was racked by horrific violence and on the brink of civil war. Now, levels of violence and civilians and military casualties are significantly reduced and hope has been rekindled in many Iraqi communities. To be sure, the progress is reversible and there is much more to be done. Nonetheless, the hard-fought accomplishments of 2007 have been substantial, and I want to thank each of you for the contributions you made to them.

We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I

expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet

PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should
be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as
will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think
