Linda Hom takes her kids to the gym when she works out -- and they get a workout of their own.

Ms. Hom, a free-lance fashion designer from South Orange, N.J., signed up Matthew, 7 years old, and Sydnie, 9, for Tae Kwon Do classes at Motion Fitness Club, the health club where she has been a member since 2004.

The kids take a 45-minute class three times a week. And, says Sydnie, "the adults don't really bother us because we're doing our own thing and they're doing theirs."

Having the kids join the health club, says Ms. Hom, 42, "was a way for me to not tell, but show them that I work out, too, to be healthy." She adds that "it's a nice combination for a busy parent to have that option of working out at the same time."

Finding Health Insurance if You Are Self-Employed

If there is one thing that separates the self-employed from those employed by others, it is their preoccupation with health insurance.

I was reminded of this on Feb. 14, when I wrote a post on the Shifting Careers blog asking small-business owners and would-be entrepreneurs what they were doing about health insurance. Within hours, scores of people posted comments about their own experiences and, if they had managed to find good resources, shared those. I have been reading e-mail messages and trying to make sense of the subject ever since. In short, it is not pretty out there.

Jon Kabat-Zinn is the founder of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at U Mass, and he’s highly regarded for his role in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine. He’s also an illuminating writer and speaker on the ways that mindfulness meditation can improve health and reduce stress.

I really enjoyed this hour-plus talk Kabat-Zinn delivered at Google last year. It’s a terrific introduction to meditation that includes a long portion where you can “meditate along,” learning how to follow your breath and become more aware of being in the moment. (I doubt I’m the only one who’ll benefit from that bit of help today).

Pollution Could Affect Athletes in Beijing

The International Olympic Committee acknowledged for the first time yesterday that air pollution could affect the health and performance of athletes at this summer's Olympics in Beijing and said it would monitor air quality daily during the Games to determine whether to postpone certain outdoor events.

Air-quality problems could decrease the potential for world records and peak performances in all sports while creating a possible health risk in outdoor endurance events such as the marathon, triathlon and road cycling, the committee's highest-ranking medical official said.

A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose. Also, utilities insist their water is safe.

But the presence of so many prescription drugs — and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen — in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.

THE United States has rejected the Indonesian Health Minister's claims that it is using bird flu samples to produce biological weapons and World Health Organisation officials have condemned allegations of conspiring to profit from bird flu vaccines. The Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, is understood to have ordered the minister, Siti Fadilah Supari, to recall copies of her book on avian influenza, which alleges the US and the WHO are conspiring against developing countries by seizing control of bird flu samples.

Back in 2004, federal health officials figured that an advertising campaign could help increase rates of breast-feeding in the United States.

Breast milk, as doctors universally recognize and the FDA makes very clear, is healthier than formula. It's full of ingredients developed by a few million years of evolution to do a baby's body good. Breast-fed kids are less likely to get sick as they grow up, the milk is always sterile, and there's probably a psychological benefit, too.

But the baby formula industry -- a subdivision of the high-powered pharmaceutical industry -- didn't like this, reports the Washington Post, so they put pressure on the Department of Health and Human Services to tone down the ads.

WASHINGTON — Politics have turned ugly over renewal of a government health insurance program for children that most lawmakers and the Bush administration support in theory, yet faces a veto and Republican opposition in the House.

House Democrats on Wednesday pushed through rules for the debate on the State Children's Health Insurance Program bill, 222-197.

The bickering devolved into shouting across the House floor Tuesday evening when Republican Rep. Lee Terry told Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner to "shut up" after Weiner yelled, "We can't trust you," while House Minority Leader John Boehner spoke in opposition to the debate rules.

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., the party whip, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., are offering a $33 billion alternative that would limit eligibility for the program to those it was originally designed to cover — people at 200 percent of poverty, or $41,300 for a family of four.

Contaminated tomatoes blamed for salmonella outbreak

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Contaminated fresh tomatoes served in restaurants were the cause of a recent salmonella outbreak that sickened dozens of people in 21 states, health officials said Friday.

The outbreak, now over, sickened at least 183 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were no reports of deaths, although 22 people were hospitalized. Interviews with victims, including detailed surveys of what they had eaten and where before falling sick, led investigators to suspect restaurant tomatoes as the cause.

"We have identified tomatoes eaten in restaurants as the cause of this outbreak. We don't have any information that a name or a certain type of restaurant is involved. As far as we can tell, it's across the board," said Dr. Christopher Braden, a foodborne outbreak and surveillance expert with the CDC.

A group of mothers has started delivering fast food through a school's fence in protest at the campaign for healthier school meals.

The parents claim they are taking action because pupils are turning up their noses at what they describe as "overpriced, low-fat rubbish".

Four of them are using a supermarket trolley to make daily runs with fish and chips, pies, burgers, sandwiches and fizzy drinks from local takeaways.

Staff at Rawmarsh Comprehensive School, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, have called in environmental health and education officials. They are looking into whether the women are allowed to sell food without an operating licence and whether they are covered by food hygiene regulations.

The Mental Health Foundation says scientific studies have clearly linked attention deficit disorder, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia to junk food and the absence of essential fats, vitamins and minerals in industrialised diets.

A further report, Changing Diets, Changing Minds, is also published today by Sustain, the organisation that campaigns for better food. It warns that the NHS bill for mental illness, at almost £100bn a year, will continue to rise unless the government focuses on diet and the brain in its food, farming, education and environment policies.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said this week.

Participants said the vegan diet was easier than most because they didn't measure portions or count calories.

They lowered their cholesterol more and ended up with better kidney function, according to the report published in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association.

Participants said the vegan diet was easier to follow than most because they did not measure portions or count calories. Three of the vegan dieters dropped out of the study, compared with eight on the standard diet.

"I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs," Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, which helped conduct the study, told a news conference Thursday.

Google Health rumors have started again

Rumors about Google Health, a service that slipped into the background after Google co-op was released, have started to surface once again. Wheels started turning after a post from VC Ratings talking about the service was published today. According to the author, Google is looking to partner with WebMD and Intuit in a deal that could provide users what they call a “Medical Scrapbook”.
