Bush to America: Hang in there

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush on Tuesday told a country engulfed by dire economic news that it should not expect a sudden recovery, but rather a gradual rebound that will test people's patience.

Pounding home a sober tone, Bush said about a dozen times that the nation is enduring "tough times."

"I know that the days are dim right now for a lot of folks," Bush said. "But I firmly believe tomorrow is going to be brighter."

Just not literally tomorrow.

The government's unprecedented plan to buy up Wall Street's failed assets has not kept the stock market from plunging or the credit crisis from imperiling financial markets around the globe. That, in turn, has exacerbated the confusion of the public, which was told repeatedly that the government plan was a rescue.

So the White House, led by Bush, is sending this message: Hang in there, America. The massive federal intervention will just take time to work.

I guess Bush and crew figured without a bad guy to chase, the war would be short, so let Bin Laden out there so we can expand the war.

One reason why I could never take orders - if I had the bad guy in sight - I would take em out!

After September 11, 2001, a team of elite Delta Force commandos was sent into Afghanistan with an assignment to find and kill Osama bin Laden at Tora Bora -- but that mission failed.

The commander of the Delta Force team has now written a book which tells what he says is the true story of what went wrong. He appeared anonymously on CBS's 60 Minutes on Sunday to summarize that story.

Congress sets stage for solar boom

After months of failed attempts in Congress to extend crucial renewable energy tax credits, the end-game came with lightning speed Friday afternoon: The House of Representatives passed the green incentives attached to the financial bailout package approved by the Senate Wednesday night and President Bush promptly signed the legislation into law.

There were goodies for wind, geothermal and alternative fuels, but the big winner by far was the solar industry.

“It feels like we should be popping the champagne,” said a Silicon Valley solar exec Green Wombat met for lunch minutes after Bush put pen to paper.

President Bush: 'The economy is strong. The economy is strong ... whoops!'

We've heard President Bush say it, seemingly more times than even Google can count: Stop worrying. The American economy is strong. We are going through difficult times, perhaps, but the economy is strong.

Ditto Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. and Ben S. Bernanke, the Fed chairman.

Throughout 2007, the economy was just great. Well into 2008, it was just great. Matter of fact, it was just great until the $700-billion bailout/rescue/whatever plan came along.

Suddenly, the president had a new message: Start worrying. Congress' failure to approve the plan could put the entire U.S. economy -- and perhaps that of the whole world -- at risk.

"We're facing a choice between action and the real prospect of economic hardship for millions of Americans," the president said Tuesday in one of his early-morning message-to-the-market appearances. "And for the financial security of every American, Congress must act."

US President George W. Bush signs a government expenditures bill topping 600 billion dollars after his economic relief plan fails.

After Bush's banking bailout scheme failed, the president endorsed a budget bill of 600 billion dollars to fund his administration's activities for the next six months, AFP reported.

Referring to his rejected plan to rescue Wall Street, Bush said, “I am disappointed that the Congress passed a long-term continuing resolution. There is much work to be done, and the Congress should not adjourn for the year without finishing important business on spending, taxes, and free trade agreements.”

The Congress rejected Bush's economic rescue plan to revive the country's ailing investment and money markets due to unclear points in parts of the scheme.

clipper's remarks: I personally still think it is BS that this thing has such a RUSH on it. If it is that bad, then why did they not fix it a few weeks ago or a month ago. Forecasting could have shown projections on where things were going.
There is definitely something else behind this whole thing to RUSH things through.

WASHINGTON - Democrats won a key concession from the White House on the financial bailout plan Wednesday and sought to drastically slash the $700 billion size of the rescue. President Bush readied a prime-time speech in a push to persuade resistant lawmakers to back his proposal to stave off a deepening economic crisis.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson agreed to demands from critics in both parties to limit the pay packages of Wall Street executives whose companies would benefit from the proposed bailout.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., pressed Paulson on the idea Tuesday and was told it would be a “grave mistake.”

“I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time,” he said.

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Russia is intent on mending ties with the U.S. once President George W. Bush leaves the office on Jan. 20, prompting unprecedented interest in this year's presidential campaign, its UN ambassador said in an interview.

In the meantime, Russia is unlikely to back new efforts to curtail the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea.

``There has been a standard in the history of Soviet and now Russian-American relations of common wisdom that there is not much difference between administrations; now that is not the case,'' said Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, the last spokesman for the Soviet Union's foreign ministry.

``The problem is there'' because of the dispute over Russian actions in Georgia, Churkin added before today's start of speeches by world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly. ``But I don't think there is irreversible damage. We do not want to see our formats of cooperation disrupted.''

Bush suddenly scraps comments on financial markets

WASHINGTON (AP) — With little explanation, President Bush on Tuesday scrapped a statement he planned to give on the tumultuous financial markets, abandoning any press coverage of his meeting with key economic advisers as more developments roiled Wall Street.

As announced by the White House, Bush was scheduled to make comments to a pool of reporters after huddling with a key financial working group led by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Its members include Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other key government figures in the field of commerce.

Yet after the session began, the White House told the press never mind. Spokesman Tony Fratto said only: "We decided it would be best to limit public comment about markets today." He declined to offer any explanation about why limiting Bush comment would be best, or why on this particular day.

The meeting went on as planned.

WASHINGTON: The Bush administration is pushing through a broad array of foreign weapons deals as it seeks to re-arm Iraq and Afghanistan, contain North Korea and Iran, and solidify ties with onetime Russian allies.

From tanks, helicopters and fighter jets to missiles, remotely piloted aircraft and even warships, the Department of Defense has agreed so far this fiscal year to sell or transfer more than $32 billion in weapons and other military equipment to foreign governments, compared with $12 billion in 2005.

The trend, which started in 2006, is most pronounced in the Middle East, but it reaches into northern Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and even Canada, through dozens of deals that senior Bush administration officials say they are confident will both tighten military alliances and combat terrorism.

Missile defense backers now citing Russia threat

WASHINGTON: A Congressional battle over funding of a U.S. missile defense plan in Eastern Europe threatens to undermine the Bush administration's case that the system is not aimed at Russia.

President George W. Bush's administration has argued that the missile shield — which was bolstered last week by the signing of an agreement to allow U.S. interceptors in Poland_ was aimed at securing the United States and allies in the region from nuclear threats by North Korea and Iran.

But as Republicans try to convince Democrats to speed along legislation to fund the program, they are pointing to Russia's invasion of Georgia as a reason the program is vital. The rhetoric, however, risks strengthening Moscow's argument that the system, which Russia vociferously opposes, is merely a new Cold War incarnation directed against them.

Some presidents get carved into Mt Rushmore; others have airports, motorways, and even entire cities named in their honour. But when George Bush leaves office, his most visible memorial may be a mouldering patch of human effluent.

In November, alongside casting their ballot for the next president, the people of San Francisco will also vote on a measure to rename one of the city's largest sewage works the George W Bush Sewage Plant, to provide a "fitting monument" to the outgoing commander-in-chief's achievements.

Activists from the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco, a mischievously-named group behind the move, will ask supporters to participate in a "synchronised flush".

May 3 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush said Americans are ``facing a tough economic period'' after reports this week showed the economy lost jobs for a fourth straight month and economic growth was close to a standstill.

``My administration has been clear and candid on the state of the economy,'' Bush said today in his weekly radio address. ``We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action.''

Payrolls shrank by 20,000 workers last month, following a revised 81,000 drop in March, the Labor Department said yesterday. The same day, the Federal Reserve, seeking to prevent a deeper slowdown, announced fresh measures to coax banks into lending.

Bush blames India’s middle class for food price hike

“There are 350 million people in India who are classified as middle class. That’s bigger than America. Their middle class is larger than our entire population,” observed Mr Bush. ‘‘And when you start getting wealth, you start demanding better nutrition and better food. And so demand is high, and that causes the price to go up.”

The remarks, made in a speech on economy and trade, earned him an immediate rebuke from India where a spokesman for the ruling Congress party said Mr Bush’s analysis was “completely erroneous” as India is not a food importer but a food exporter.

Mr Bush, however, is not the first US leader to blame India. Earlier this week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also expressed similar views. She said that improving incomes and prosperity in India and China were responsible for the rising food prices.

US Vice President Dick Cheney says the Bush administration has significantly helped make America and the world a better, safer place.

"When the history is written, it will be said this is a safer country and more hopeful world because George Bush was president," Cheney said in a Friday gathering of Okalahoma Republicans.

The US vice president assured the crowd that Washington's war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan is headed in the right direction.

Bush admits he approved torture

WASHINGTON -- The American people have heard President Bush and his spokespeople say many times that the U.S. government does not engage in torture.

Whether Bush was believed or not is another story -- especially in light of the photographic evidence of the abuse of prisoners in Abu Ghraib. It's understood that many of the photos are too sadistically graphic to be made public.

"As a matter of fact," Bush added, "I told the country we did that. And I told them it was legal. We had legal opinions that enabled us to do it."

The president added, "I didn't have any problems at all trying to find out what Khalid Sheik Mohammed knew."

"He was the person who ordered the suicide attack -- I mean, the 9/11 attacks," Bush said. "And back then, there was all kind of concern about people saying, 'Well, the administration is not connecting the dots.' You might remember those -- that period." Bush said.
