Recently I had the chance to attend an event called “Government 2.0 and Beyond… Harnessing Collective Intelligence,” which was hosted by the Department of Defense’s Information Resources Management College (IRMC). It had all the makings of a public relations boon: High-profile speakers like David Weinberger (who blogged from the event), corporate sponsorship, media coverage, and a new auditorium to show off. Alvin Toffler, the author of Future Shock, was even there. But what I didn’t see among the people in the room was urgency.

What Cloud Computing Really Means

Cloud computing is all the rage. "It's become the phrase du jour," says Gartner senior analyst Ben Pring, echoing many of his peers. The problem is that (as with Web 2.0) everyone seems to have a different definition.

As a metaphor for the Internet, "the cloud" is a familiar cliché, but when combined with "computing," the meaning gets bigger and fuzzier. Some analysts and vendors define cloud computing narrowly as an updated version of utility computing: basically virtual servers available over the Internet. Others go very broad, arguing anything you consume outside the firewall is "in the cloud," including conventional outsourcing.

101 Web Marketing Ideas and Tips

Global Marketing (emphasizing technical specifications)

Don’t use site-wide links. They are highly deprecated in the latest algorithm changes, and may even lead you to a penalization of your website’s SERPs. As a measure of precaution, I recommend a maximum of one site-wide (no matter the number of pages) for every 40 to 50 unique links from 40 to 50 unique domains.

Use the title and meta description tags as wise as possible. They are your best choice of avoiding supplemental pages. Try to make each page with it’s own unique title and description, and never repeat more than 20-25% of the title and description tags content on different pages. Use a limited number of characters (8-10) in the title tag, and put the most important of them, relevant to each page, at the beginning.

Try to use H tags (1,2,3 etc) at the top-most possible location in the pages of your website, in the source order, and NOT visual order.

Brad Neuberg has announced the release of HyperScope 1.0, a Web app based on tech legend Douglas Engelbart's 1968 NLS/Augment (oNLine System). Engelbart and team have been working on Hyperscope since March this year, in a project funded by the National Science Foundation. Its aim is to rebuild portions of Douglas Engelbart's NLS system on the web, using current Web technologies such as AJAX and DHTML.

The project team members are Doug Engelbart (visionary), Brad Neuberg (software architect and implementor), Jonathan Cheyer (who knows more about Augment than anyone else under 35), Christina Engelbart (the bridge between the old and the new) and Eugene Eric Kim (project liaison and collaboration guru).

Turkey is next in this R/WW series on top international Web apps. It's the 9th country I've profiled so far - the others have been Germany, Holland, Poland, Korea, United Kingdom, Russia, Spain and China. For the following information on Turkey, I have Emre Sokullu to thank (also Honor Gunday for info on his web apps). Emre is an open source enthusiast from Istanbul, whose projects include GROU.PS, Turkix and SimpleKDE. He was over in Silicon Valley recently and not only did he attend the TechCrunch party, he also visited the Googleplex and ate quasedillas "just 10 m. away from Sergey Brin"! But I digress...

Overview of Turkey Web market

Turkey is a nation of over 70M and straddles Europe and Asia. In terms of Web apps Emre said that Turkey, like Israel, has a number of growing web 2.0 companies - and "almost all of them are local clones of some proven [international] ideas". But he says that his own app, Grou.ps, "is an exception there." Interestingly, there are no exact Flickr and del.icio.us clones in Turkey. Emre thinks the reason is that photo sharing is not popular enough in his country and StumbleUpon (see below) is more than enough for link sharing/storing.

Amongst the international web apps, Gmail, Meebo, Blogger and StumbleUpon are very popular in Turkey.

Web Platform Primer - what's available via API?

The Web computing platform today encompasses a wide range of functions, a lot of which are accessible via APIs (Application Programming Interface). From the relatively simple bookmarking service del.icio.us, to more complex functionality like Amazon S3's complete virtualization of data storage - it's amazing what can be done nowadays using Web APIs.

In this post, I've categorized the Web platform into 6 infrastructure building blocks and I will briefly outline some of the products that define each one. The common thread is that each product mentioned has an API, which means it can be integrated as a part of other services.

Architectures of Participation: The Next Big Thing

Well, it seems to be finally happening. The Web 2.0 sites are starting to bubble up -- no pun intended -- to the very top of the traffic charts, with MySpace and then YouTube eclipsing each other in weeks. The Guardian reported yesterday that YouTube is now commanding 3.9% of all Internet traffic, making it the #1 site on the Internet. That's more than impressive given that they only started out in February, 2005. I've been covering MySpace and YouTube in my last two pieces (one, two) because they in particular seem to represent leading edge best practices in the social architectures of large-scale public Web sites. Ostensibly very "Web 2.0", both MySpace and YouTube aggressively "harness the collective intelligence" of their user's combined contributions as their primary offering to the world. In this sense, they have put their architectures of participation at the core of their product design. And wouldn't you know it, it's made them both leaders on the world stage.

As you can see, I’m still struggling to keep up with the blog. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks, partly because of my recent (lateral) transfer into a new department, meaning: new responsibilities, a rush to implement/execute new strategies, and a learning curve to boot. Oh well…not everyone can quit their day jobs and blog full time (we should be so lucky, huh?). Anyway, I’ve been meaning to post this one for a while, so—as they say—better late than never, I guess…

Web 2.0 Entrepreneurs: Can You Digg It?

A couple of weeks back, Business Week had a cover story on Kevin Rose (Founder, Digg.com) “…and the new wave of young entrepreneurs running the hottest of the top 100 Web 2.0 companies”, called Valley Boys. It’s a fascinating read that (pardon the pun) digs deep into the growing trend of the “community first” business model that is sweeping the Web 2.0 world (e.g. Digg, YouTube, MySpace, etc.), which has given rise to soaring numbers and, ultimately, resulted in high valuations of these companies and incredible post-bubble acquisition deals (e.g. MySpace = $580 million). And with Digg’s estimated value at ~$200 million, Biz Week pegs Kevin Rose—who retains 30-40% of the company—to have an estimated worth of around a cool $60 million…in just 18 months (since Digg’s launch). First - the concept. Clipmarks allows the user to easily grab (clip) any content from just about any web site, both graphical and text, simply by clicking on it and easily store it online for future reference. That includes both static and dynamic content. Before you say 'so what?', it also has a number of ways how that information can be organized. Not only can you have a clipmark attributed to one of more Collections of your choice, but you can also tag each clipmark to your heart's content. Thus finding relevant info is a breeze. That's what separates it completely from a basic concept of bookmarking, although it obviously accomplishes the same task exceptionally well.
