And for the promise of a fresh, warm body, it seems they're willing to overlook a few flawsTo find out, Radar's Teddy Wayne called recruiting stations around the country disguised as a veritable Breakfast Club of misfit would-be soldiers, all dramatically unqualified or unattractive for service in some way: a flamboyant gay man concerned with the availability of hair pomades in Iraq; a bed-wetting mama's boy who wants to bring his own alarm-rigged plastic sheets; a martial arts freak desperate to unleash throwing stars and nunchakus on Osama; a meth dealer who has "hypothetically" done every drug in the book; a chronic IBS sufferer who subsists mostly on celery; and a lobotomy patient whose side effects include problems with "Decision-Making Ethical Opportunities."

I know you said you can't spice up the uniforms, but can you bring along things that give it a little flair, like a silk handkerchief, if it's digital camouflage also? Fashion's your big issue here.

Linda Branagan is an expert on daemons. She has a T-shirt that sports the daemon in tennis shoes that appears on the cover of the 4.3BSD manuals and The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD UNIX Operating System by S. Leffler, M. McKusick, M. Karels, J. Quarterman, Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Reading, MA 1989.

She tells the following story about wearing the 4.3BSD daemon T-shirt:

Last week I walked into a local "home style cookin' restaurant/watering hole" in Texas to pick up a take-out order. I spoke briefly to the waitress behind the counter, who told me my order would be done in a few minutes.

So, while I was busy gazing at the farm implements hanging on the walls, I was approached by two "natives." These guys might just be the original Texas rednecks.

``Pardon us, ma'am. Mind if we ask you a question?''

Well, people keep telling me that Texans are real friendly, so I nodded.

AOL to dig for gold at home of spammer's parents

WASHINGTON (AP) — AOL thinks there might be gold buried on Peggy Greenbaum's property, and they plan to dig it up.

AOL won a $12.8 million judgment against the Massachusetts woman's son, Davis Hawke, last year. The company accused Hawke of violating anti-spam laws by sending unwanted e-mails to AOL subscribers. Hawke didn't show up in court, giving AOL a default judgment.

AOL now says it believes Hawke has stashed a fortune in gold and platinum bars, and it's in or near his mother's home. Greenbaum says her son wouldn't be “stupid enough” to do that. She says he's “long gone” and she doesn't know where.

She says the incident has humiliated the family, but AOL will “make fools of themselves” if they dig up her yard.

AOL has said it will try not to be obtrusive.

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German woman left her friend as a deposit at a gas station because she did not have enough cash to pay for her petrol, police said Wednesday.

"She didn't have enough money to pay the bill, so her friend stayed behind as a human deposit while she went to withdraw cash," said a spokesman for police in the southern town of Muenchberg. "Unfortunately, the woman did not return."

Two hours after the 20-year-old driver left, the gas station called the police, who interrogated the stranded "deposit" before releasing her. Police are investigating the driver on suspicion of fraud.

Just in time for Valentine's Day: Boing Boing pal and Texas-native-songwriter Ned Sublette shares news that Willie Nelson has recorded Ned's ode to Dorothy-befriended cowpokes, "Cowboys are Frequently Secretly." The song is available on iTunes, and a ringtone's on the way.

"There's going to be a Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly ringtone, and I'm told there is also a video, though I haven't seen it.," says Ned. "It was covered by the queercore group Pansy Division, who changed it from a waltz to 4/4. I tried to place it in Brokeback Mountain, but the word I got was that it was too funny for a tear-jerkin' movie."

BioWillie went on sale Wednesday at an alternative fuel station in San Diego where the 72-year-old singer filled his tour bus from a pump emblazoned with a picture of himself strumming a guitar.

'Badboy' films himself at 210kmh

An English court has freed a teenager who drove up to speeds of 210kmh in his car while filming himself.

Danny Hyde, 18, had one hand on the wheel of his Vauxhall Astra while holding his mobile phone to capture his joyride near Ipswich in south-east England, the Daily Mail reported.

He then posted the clip on YouTube under the heading "Danny's Badboy Astra".
