A young African-American man heard John F. Kennedy’s “Ask what you can do for your country,” gave up his student deferment, left college, joined the Marines for two years and then became a Navy corpsman. Elected class valedictorian, he was assigned for four years to Bethesda Naval Hospital where he helped care for Lyndon Johnson.

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney used student deferments, avoiding active duty through family connections. Who’s the real patriot — one who sacrificed years or those who merely mouthed love of country?

Some of Wright’s comments are inexcusable and rightly condemned, but calling him “unpatriotic”? Wright’s church offers many services — housing, employment programs, scholarships, ministry to people with HIV/AIDS. “It’s (because of) his deep faith in God and his desire to be an agent of change in the world,” said Michael Pfleger, a South Side Roman Catholic priest. A recently developed technique that might eventually produce facsimiles of human embryonic stem cells from skin cells was lauded by President Bush and the Catholic Church as an ethical alternative to using human embryos for research. But it “opens a whole new can of worms” — the possibility of creating chimera humans — one researcher says.

The idea is that you could borrow skin cells from a living or dead person (Albert Einstein jumped to the mind of the concerned scientist) to give your child a genetic leg up.

Overlooked, according to Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer of Advanced Cell Technology in this article in the Independent, is the potential for making baby Einsteins.

“If we had a few skin cells from Albert Einstein, or anyone else in the world, you could have a child that is say 10 per cent or 70 per cent Albert Einstein by just injecting a few of their cells into an embryo,” Lanza said. “It’s unethical and unsafe, but someone may be doing it today.”

At merely 1 foot 11 inches (57.5 centimeters) tall and fully grown at the age of 15, Jyoti Amge of Nagpur, India, is smaller than the average 2-year old and the Worlds Smallest Girl according to the Indian Book of Records. Born December 16 1993, this remarkable girl weighs only 11 pounds (5 kilos), a result of Achondroplasia — the most common form of dwarfism — and will never grow any taller.

Jyoti is too small to use a normal sized knife and fork, so she eats off special plates, sleeps in a tiny, custom-built bed, and has to have her clothes and jewelry custom-made for her.

Even bathing is done on a miniature scale, requiring specially-made steps to help her get into the tub and a small bucket and jug to wash herself.

This extraordinary little girl actually goes to a regular school at Bhartiya Vidya Niketan in Nagpur, where her fellow classmates of her own age treat her as one of themselves as she sits at her custom built miniature desk and chair.

In 1901 it was obvious that the workers of the Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls needed a walkway to cross between the falls, to provide transport of materials, vigilance and maintenance of the channel. Construction of the walkway lasted four years. It was finished in 1905.

DALLAS — The city cannot shut down a Dallas strip club just because a 12-year-old danced nude there.

The city ordinance that regulates sexually oriented businesses does not allow authorities to revoke the license of such a business for employing someone under 18.

"There's a laundry list of things we can use to deny or revoke a license, but having a 12-year-old dancing in their establishment is not one of the things that automatically enables us to revoke their license," said Lt. Christina Smith, a Dallas police vice unit commander who oversees licensing of such establishments.

Authorities say that over a two-week period last year, the sixth-grader danced at Diamonds Cabaret. They also say they found a 17-year-old girl working in the club in January.

Police are continuing to investigate whether the club's management knew that the girl — a runaway at the time — was underage.

Message in a Bottle Found After 21 Years at Sea

The letter in the soda bottle traveled over 1,700 miles before being discovered. The message was sent during the 1986-87 school year and spent over 20 years in transit before its discovery late last year.

Twenty-one years ago, a suburban Seattle elementary school science class signed type-written messages, put them in bottles, and dropped them in Puget Sound. Earlier this month, Merle Brandell, a bear hunter in Alaska found one of the soda bottles in the Bering Sea and was intrigued by the message. The letter read:

[This letter] is part of our science project to study oceans and learn about people in distant lands.Please send the date and location of the bottle with your address. I will send you my picture and tell you when and where the bottle was placed in the ocean. Your friend, Emily Hwaung.

Brandell, who discovered the message, did his part to try and contact the little girl who wrote the letter. However, his calls to the North City School, which was identified in the letter, went unanswered. So Brandell sent the school district a letter, and was surprised to discover the North City School was long closed and the little girl who had written the letter was now a woman.

Hollywood braces for SAG labor talks

LOS ANGELES - In a Century Plaza Hotel ballroom earlier this week, 600 people gathered to hear Hollywood heavyweights tally the fallout from the writers strike.

Meanwhile, in another corner of the hotel, union officials representing movie and TV actors huddled to finalize a battle plan for their upcoming contract talks.

Hollywood is hoping their story has a different ending.

Or better yet, a complete rewrite of the plot — one without a strike.

With new shows just starting to return to TV, the entertainment industry finally seems to be shaking off the devastating impact of the 100-day strike by the Writers Guild of America that ended Feb. 12 and took an estimated $2.5 billion toll on the local economy. But the industry remains on edge as leaders of the Screen Actors Guild have said publicly they will push for an even better deal than the one writers got.

Newark rooftops could be used to yield a fifth of city's electricity needs

Rooftop solar panels could provide Newark with more than a fifth of the city's total electricity, a University of Delaware researcher said Friday.

Researchers from UD's Center for the Energy and the Environment used mapping software and a solar energy assessment program to determine how much rooftop space was actually usable for solar panels.

They used aerial images to determine which houses would be best for panels, eliminating those with too much shading from trees, chimneys, nearby buildings or other obstructions.

Flat-roofed buildings are ideal for solar, Zhou said, and Newark has plenty, with UD's many buildings and the city's industrial sector. South-facing roofs are also best, to catch the sun's rays most often.

The team found that Newark has 5.8 million square feet of suitable, available rooftop real estate. Solar panels on that area could generate 77.9 gigawatts per hour of electricity, or 21 percent of the city's power usage in 2006, Zhou said.

To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The solvent dissolves adhesive

The dollar is trading at all time lows against the euro and gold for good reasons. The Bush administration has flooded the world with greenbacks, and global investors have little confidence in the management of the U.S. economy.

During the Bush years, the U.S. trade deficit has doubled. Thanks to dysfunctional energy policies and tolerance for Chinese mercantilism, the deficit has exceeded $700 billion each of the last three years and is more than 5 percent of GDP.

The Bush energy policy emphasizes incentives for domestic oil production and letting rising prices instigate conservation but those have failed. Domestic crude oil production is falling, the price of gas has risen from $1.51 to $3.21, automakers have populated U.S. roads with fuel guzzling SUVs, and petroleum now accounts for about $380 billion of the trade deficit.

When George Bush was inaugurated, the euro was trading at 94 cents and gold cost $266 an ounce. Now they are trading at $1.52 and $985 an ounce.

War is hell - deadly, dangerous, and expensive. But just how expensive is it?

Glad you asked. If we consider the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan together - which we might as well do, since we and our children and grandchildren will be paying for them together into the distant future - a conservative single-week estimate comes to $3.5 billion. Remember, that's per week!

By contrast, the whole international community spends less than $400 million per year on the International Atomic Energy Agency, the primary institution for monitoring and preventing the spread of nuclear weapons; that's less than one day's worth of war costs. The U.S. government spends just $1 billion per year securing and destroying loose nuclear weapons and bomb-making materials, or less than two days' worth of war costs; and Washington spends a total of just $7 billion per year on combating global warming, or a whopping two weeks' worth of war costs.
