Richard Branson -- In 1970, Richard Branson founded Virgin as a mail order record retailer, and not long afterward he opened a record shop in London. Two years later, the first Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded "Tubular Bells." Since then many household names, including Ben Harper, Fatboy Slim, Perry Farrell, Gorillaz, Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson and The Rolling Stones have helped to make Virgin Music one of the top record companies in the world.

Branson sold the equity of Virgin Music Group -- record labels, music publishing and recording studios -- in 1992 in a $1 billion deal, but he remains chairman of Virgin Group, which today includes Virgin Atlantic, Books, Games, LifeCare, Limousines, Megastores and Hotels.

Barry Diller -- Barry Diller started his career in the mail room of the William Morris Agency after dropping out of UCLA after one semester. He was hired by ABC in 1966 where he created the ABC Movie of the Week, pioneering the concept of the made-for-television movie.

A messy desk is a sign of creativity and imagination. This is the excuse I gave myself for the mountain of papers, knickknacks, and San Pellegrino bottles normally piled on my desk at work. Truth is, I’m just lazy. When I started wasting more and more time looking for lost items instead of being a brilliant creative person, I knew I had to do something. Online volunteers roll up their sleeves

NEW YORK (AP) -- When it comes to volunteering, Caitrin Murphy finds satisfaction in spending 10 months helping Tijuana orphans or a Saturday building low-income homes outside Washington, D.C.

But onsite projects aren't always feasible, so Murphy instead turned to the Internet and, with two co-workers, remotely created a Web site for an organization that helps farmers in the West African country of Cameroon.

"It's an adequate alternative," Murphy said. "I would prefer a hands-on, physical experience at the site. At the same time, ... by doing a project virtually we could affect the lives of people we would never think of meeting."

Online volunteering is growing as Internet access improves worldwide, particularly among African and Latin American organizations needing assistance.

This is HR and recruiting week on my blog! This is an interview with Libby Sartain of Yahoo. She is responsible for leading Yahoo! Inc.’s global human resources efforts and managing and developing the human resources team. Prior to joining Yahoo! in August 2001, Sartain was “vice president of people” at Southwest Airlines. She holds an MBA from the University of North Texas and a BBA from Southern Methodist University.

Question: At any given moment, how many jobs are you trying to fill?

Answer: Our number of open requisitions fluctuate, but if I had to average, I would say about 1,000 at any given moment and 2,500 or so total per year.

Question: On average, how many applications do you get per job?

Answer: For the last few years, we have received more than 120,000 resumes a year. So, we start with about 50/1 ratio, but when we narrow that down to actual qualified candidates, we see about ten for every job.

clipper's remarks: It seems like there are more career sites being created every month. ONe would think with Monster, Hot jobs, etc. that there are enough places for people to look for jobs? This new site a New Job, seems to take a difference approach by offering the employers free listings and then charging the job seekers a fee if they are hired. One reason many companies don't post with Monster, Hotjobs, etc. is the fees they pay for listing. IN some cases the fees are much more then those of the classified in printed newspaper.

This site seems to take the approach of the headhunter business model. Where you hire a headhunter to locate a job for you and they get paid when you get hired. Be interested to know what fee they charge and what salary range they will target.

While most of the attention paid to people who work at home focuses on telecommuting options, there is a growing trend of being able to use temporary or part-time workers out of their homes as well -- and some are apparently looking at it as an alternative to offshoring. Lots of folks are familiar with things like JetBlue's customer service staff all working out of their homes, but a startup is trying to organize plenty of other jobs in the same manner, allowing programmers, designers and writers to work part-time from their homes on an as-necessary basis. In some ways, this is just an update on various freelance/contractor job boards -- but the idea is that the companies using this type of work outsource more of the management of the system to this particular startup, which does background checks on the various workers and even digitally looks over their shoulder on occassion to make sure they're really working (which, obviously, some may find invasive). Still, it does seem like a more interesting way to enable people to work on their own time from home than options like having people stare at security camera output all day. Either way, it is enabling new ways of working, often for groups of people who might otherwise find it more difficult to make a living.

Electronic Portfolios: What Are They?

Electronic portfolios or e-portfolios are gaining increasing media attention as potentially highly valuable learning, evaluation and assessment tools for educators, learners and academic organizations.

An e-portfolio is a web-published collection of documents, information, link resources, audio and video clips that showcases the demonstrated abilities, know-how and skills of a specific person to her own selected stakeholders.

Some academic researchers have ventured as far as stating that e-portfolios “may have the most significant effect on education since the introduction of formal schooling” (Love, McKean, and Gathercoal, 2004).

But e-Portfolios are nothing else than the modern-day digital version of our old-time classroom notebooks, separate physical information containers with finite capacity for each field of study (mathematics separate from literature or science).

Digital e-portfolios (also known and referred to as "webfolios") wipe out all of the above limitations and traits by offering an integrated personal publishing environment in which all topics and interests can be interrelated, there is no limitation to the amount of information and resources that can be added, and which can be selectively shared with faculty, peers, family and friends for many different purposes.

Like an up-to-date web-based content management system, "users can upload files of any type, organize them in folders, and then reference them in presentations or compositions they design to share with a particular audience or multiple audiences. For individual students and instructors, the portfolio system provides a convenient and accessible space and the tools to represent individual learning and competencies."

Google Health, what is it?

It isn't a big surprise that Google is thinking about healthcare — but now information suggests products or services for that industry are in the master plan.

Adam Bosworth, former VP of Engineering at BEA Systems, is working at Google with the title "Architect, Google Health" according to the attendee list for PC Forum. It's not news that Google has been targeting healthcare in their advertising efforts, but why would Google need an "Architect" — especially one with Bosworth's background?

Adam has an impressive resume — but does not include anything related to sales or advertising. You can read more about his history on Wikipedia.

Known as one of the pioneers of XML, Bosworth previously held various senior management positions at Microsoft, including General Manager of the WebData group, a team focused on defining and driving XML strategy. While at Microsoft, he was responsible for designing and delivering the Microsoft Access PC database product (codenamed 'Cirrus') and assembling and driving the team that developed Internet Explorer 4.0's HTML engine (codenamed 'Trident').

Prior to Microsoft, Bosworth worked for Borland where he developed the Quattro spreadsheet application following Borland's acquisition of Analytica in 1985 - founded by Bosworth and Eric Michelman, and managed by Brad Silverberg.

Any guesses as to what Google might be working on with regards to "Google Health" would be speculation, but I think there could be some interesting products in the making.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – Say you and your spouse want to relocate to a new city.

With any luck, the income from your new jobs will allow you to enjoy at least the same standard of living to which you're accustomed now. The table below reflects what a couple without kids who hold middle-management jobs would need to earn to replicate a moderately affluent lifestyle in various cities.

We've listed the 50 most expensive metropolitan areas and the 50 least expensive from among the 364 cities and counties that participated in the latest ACCRA cost-of-living survey.

As you look the list over, keep in mind that the federal tax bite for the couple will vary considerably based on their nominal income. For instance, even though a $167,000 income in New York City will buy you a basket of goods (including housing) comparable to a $92,000 income in West Palm Beach, Fla., it will cost you almost $20,000 more in federal taxes. (Read more about why many otherwise middle-class couples find themselves classified as high-income taxpayers.)

The table below was compiled on behalf of the Tax Foundation by Scott Moody, chief economist with the Maine Heritage Policy Center. Moody used cost-of-living data from ACCRA, income data from the Census Bureau, and estimates for wage and salary growth from the Congressional Budget Office.
