Bond babe is into skin

Eva Green, James Bond's new honey, is comfy with nudity.

The new Bond Girl is Green, Eva Green - and she's no shrinking violet.

The 25-year-old French brunette bared it all in an erotic drama, "The Dreamers," and her steamy sex scene with Orlando Bloom in "Kingdom of Heaven" was reportedly so hot it had to be pruned.

"Nudity is not a big thing with Europeans, but it terrifies Americans," Green said in a recent interview.

Now the producers of the Bond franchise are banking on Green to sizzle as the vampy Vesper Lynd in "Casino Royale" opposite the first blond Bond, Daniel Craig.

"She brings to the complex role of Vesper an exciting combination of enigmatic and seductive beauty," producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said yesterday.

Green was en route to Prague, where the filming of the 21st Bond movie was underway.

Green, however, wasn't Columbia's first choice. She got her shot after more established stars like Angelina Jolie, Thandie Newton and Charlize Theron passed. And she reportedly had to overcome stiff competition from "Wicker Park" beauty Rose Byrne and Olivia Wilde from "The O.C."

The Paris-born daughter of French actress Marlène Jobert and Walter Green, a Swedish dentist, Green joins a sexy sorority of former Bond girls such as Halle Berry, Kim Basinger and Teri Hatcher.

Green said she gets more nervous doing interviews than taking off her clothes, which she did with relish in "The Dreamers" for Bernardo Bertolucci, who also directed the notorious "Last Tango in Paris."

Green also has a healthy disdain for working out.

"I'm French and I'm lazy, which means I smoke and I don't exercise," she told the Calgary Sun last year. "This is the body I was given."

GREENVILLE, Ala. — Failure is not an option in Linda Jarzyniecki's math classes. If Jarzyniecki needs to give a pep talk or threaten to call parents to get the job done, then so be it.

"Students come into my class hesitantly," says Jarzyniecki (Jar-za-NEEKY), or "Mrs. J.," who teaches advanced algebra, trigonometry and calculus at Greenville High. "I want to challenge my students, but I want them to experience some success so they don't become discouraged and they remain in mathematics."

Mrs. J. faces challenging demographics. Greenville High is a school with about 750 students in a rural central Alabama town of about 8,000. The median income for a family of four is about $25,000 a year, according to Census figures, and 69% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Kenyon Smith, a lithe and good-looking young man who just had his 18th birthday, is an Aquamaid.

He swims, in unison, with the Santa Clara Aquamaids, a club of synchronized swimmers. All the other Aquamaids are girls. They wear sparkly bathing suits, gobs of makeup and starlet smiles as they splash-dance around the pool. They show a lot of leg.

Comics think synchro is great material, and when the joke is on a person of the nonfemale sex, it's a sure winner. So let's all laugh at Kenyon Smith, the male synchronized swimmer.

Now here's the not-so-comical part: Young Mr. Smith isn't just any old male synchronized swimmer. He's a phenomenon. His twists and splits and head-down pirouettes are crisp and fast. His rocket thrusts him out of the water, pointy-toes first, all the way up to his armpits. He can swim almost 75 yards underwater without blacking out.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A dolphin swam up to two distressed whales that appeared headed for death in a beach stranding in New Zealand and guided them to safety, witnesses said Wednesday.

The actions of the bottlenose dolphin -- named Moko by residents who said it spends much of its time swimming playfully with humans at the beach -- amazed would-be rescuers and an expert who said they were evidence of the species' friendly nature.

The two pygmy sperm whales, a mother and her calf, were found stranded on Mahia Beach, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) northeast of the capital of Wellington, on Monday morning, said Conservation Department worker Malcolm Smith.

Rescuers worked for more than one hour to get the whales back into the water, only to see them strand themselves four times on a sandbar slightly out to sea. It looked likely the whales would have to be euthanized to prevent them suffering a prolonged death, Smith said.

Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple said it appeared the 35-year-old Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat. She initially refused emergency medical services but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital.

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

Whipple said investigators planned to present their report Wednesday to the county attorney, who will determine whether any charges should be filed against the woman's 36-year-old boyfriend.

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vermont (AP) -- Degas had his ballerinas, Monet his water lilies. For Stephen Huneck, inspiration comes on four legs -- its teeth dug into a stick, or tugging on a piece of rope, or playing on a beach.

The eclectic Vermont folk artist, who started out whittling wooden sculptures of dogs and now specializes in dog-themed furniture, woodcut paintings and children's books, has carved out a unique niche with his whimsical reproductions of Labrador retrievers and other dogs.

And his Dog Mountain studio and dog chapel -- on a picturesque 175-acre hillside farm in rural northern Vermont -- have evolved into a kind of doggy Disneyland, drawing animal lovers and their pets from all over, with some coming to mourn.

Dust readings indicate terrestrial-style planets could be more common

Between 20 and 60 percent of the sunlike stars in our galaxy's disk could harbor a diverse collection of rocky planets like Earth or Mars, scientists say.

BOSTON - Rocky planets like Earth could be found around most sunlike stars in our galaxy, new research suggests, further raising hopes that scientists will someday find E.T. or at least primitive life beyond our solar system.

The finding is based on an analysis of dust around 309 stars with masses comparable to our sun.

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope was able to detect the heat that radiated from the dust, "not unlike the smoke you'll see rising from chimneys around here in the Boston area on a cold day," said researcher Michael Meyer of the University of Arizona.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- A license plate with nothing but the number "1" on it went for a record $14 million at a charity auction Saturday.

Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, wouldn't say how many automobiles he owned or which of them might carry the record-breaking single-digit plate.

The oil-rich UAE began auctioning off vanity license plates last May. Ordinary automobile license plates issued to drivers here -- and even most other vanity series plates -- carry both Arabic and Western numerals and script, defining the issuing city and country.

She can solve her super mind boggling toy in 114 seconds and she proudly demonstrated her ability during a live show. BRATTLEBORO, Vermont (Reuters) - Some have appeared naked in a downtown parking lot. Others rode their bicycles or simply strolled the streets in the nude.

Teenagers in the quaint Vermont town of Brattleboro are raising eyebrows this summer with brazen displays of nudity.

So far they haven't been arrested or ticketed: public nudity isn't illegal in the town of 13,000 people, unless it's done to arouse sexual gratification.

Vermont has a live-and-let-live tradition, allowing skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing. Brattleboro, the first permanent English settlement in the state in 1724, is home to a community of writers, artists and musicians as well as transplanted entrepreneurs from Boston and New York.

A 17-YEAR -old rookie plumber has burned down a £5 million ($12 million) waterside mansion in southwest England, after a soldering task during his first day on the job went horribly wrong.

The historic mansion in Kingswear, Devon, was undergoing a £2 million renovation when a fire ripped through the eight-bedroom house overnight.

In just minutes it burned it down to the ground.

It is thought the fire started after polystyrene insulation caught alight from the flame of a blow torch.
The plumber was working for a firm of sub-contractors.

John Howes, of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said the plumber was "very upset", according to the Daily Mail newspaper.

"It appears at this stage that this was an unfortunate plumber who was soldering in the roof space of a large building, which was undergoing total renovation".

Candirú

The candirú or canero (Vandellia cirrhosa) or toothpick fish is a freshwater fish in the group commonly called the catfishes. It is found in the Amazon River and has a reputation among the natives as the most feared fish in its waters, even over the piranha. The species grows only to a size of an inch in length and is eel shaped and translucent, making it almost impossible to see in the water. The candiru is a parasite. It swims into the gill cavities of other fishes, erects a spine to hold itself in place, and feeds on the blood in the gills, earning it a nickname as the "vampire fish of Brazil".

It is feared by the natives because it is attracted to urine or blood, and if the bather is nude it will swim into an orifice (the anus or vagina, or even in the case of smaller specimens the penis—and perhaps deep into the urethra). It then erects its spine and begins to feed on the blood and body tissue just as it would from the gills of a fish. The candiru is then almost impossible to remove except through an operation. As the fish locates its host by following the water flow from the gills to its source, urinating while bathing increases the chance of a candiru "homing in" on a human urethra.

A traditional cure involves the use of two plants, the Xagua plant (Genipa americana) and the Buitach apple which are inserted (or their extract in the case of tight spaces) into the affected area. These two plants together will kill and then dissolve the fish. More often, infection causes shock and death in the victim before the candirú can be removed.
