Mother, daughters stopped on way to Pee Wee League football game

What was supposed to be a typical drive through a peaceful Shadyside neighborhood, turned into a standoff with a police officer threatening the life of a 7-year old girl, according one local mother.

Pamela Lawton of the Hill District said on Aug. 26, she was on her way to Homewood for a Pee Wee League football game with her two daughters, 7-year old Joshalyn, 8-year old Jasmine, and two other children ages 2 and 3. She said she was driving her green, 1998 Ford Windstar and was approaching the intersection at Kentucky Street and Negley Avenue when a Pittsburgh Police cruiser signaled for her to pull over.

“He was flying up behind me and I stopped immediately because I wanted to stay in view,” said Lawton. “I felt like there was something wrong—why would he fly up behind me like that? Plus, I had my kids in the car so it kind of scared me.”

What Lawton said happened next was beyond anything her initial fears predicted.

"Eighty-five degrees registered on my thermostat this morning," Lois Lambert, 70, said Monday. Lambert lives in Perrytown Place, an 11-story concrete building owned by Cleveland-based Forest City Enterprises.

She said the heat has forced a few residents - some of them in their 90s and with breathing problems - to move in with family or friends.

The malfunctioning air-conditioning and ventilation unit will be repaired by Wednesday, said Oscar Crowder, the vice president of federally assisted housing for Forest City Enterprises. He expects the building temperatures to return to normal by Friday.

Yesterday's high reached 90 degrees at 3:47 p.m., according to National Weather Service observers in Moon.

The high Sunday was 91 and temperatures today are expected to be in the high 80s with a 40 percent chance of thundershowers.

But the heat is nothing compared to 1988 when every day from July 4 to 16 was 90 degrees or higher.

"It's a pretty good warm-up from what we're used to," said weather service meteorologist Terry Parrish.

Pittsburgh normally averages 7.5 days a year with temperatures of 90 degrees or more, but there were 38 of them in 1988.

The temperature yesterday reached 94 in New York City, with a heat index -- meaning the combined effects of heat and humidity -- of 99. The heat index at the National Weather Service station in Moon was 92.

Big Ben In 'Serious But Stable' Condition

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was involved in a motorcycle accident around 11:30am

Witnesses tell KDKA he was not wearing a helmet and appeared to have head and facial injuries

(KDKA) PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in "serious, but stable condition" at Mercy Hospital after a motorcycle accident this morning.

According to Dr. Larry Jones, the head of trauma at Mercy, Roethlisberger is in the operating room undergoing surgery for his injuries.

In a brief statement, Dr. Jones told reporters Roethlisberger was coherent and talking with doctors before he was taken into the operating room.

Eyewitnesses tell KDKA that Roethlisberger had a green light and was headed eastbound on Second Avenue when a car turned into his path near the 10th Street Bridge around 11:30am.

Witnesses say Roethlisberger flew over the handlebars of the motorcycle and struck his head on the windshield of the car.

According to witnesses, Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet and appeared to have head and facial injuries.

The witness tells KDKA he said his name was Ben and he seemed groggy.

Pittsburgh Police Lieutenant Kevin Kraus says city police are investigating the accident -- as they do any accident involving critical injuries.

The driver of the car -- which had Maine license plates -- left the scene with police officers.

At this point, it's not clear if any charges will be filed.
