T-shirt turns air guitar into music

CANBERRA, Australia - Scientists announced Monday that they have developed a high-tech T-shirt that turns the strumming of an air guitar into music.

The T-shirt has motion sensors built into its elbows that pick up the wearer's arm motions and relay them wirelessly to a computer which interprets them as guitar riffs, said Richard Helmer, an engineer who leads the research team from the government's Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.

One arm is interpreted as picking chords while the other strums. The "wearable instrument shirt" is adaptable to both right and left-handed would-be rock stars.

"It's an easy-to-use, virtual instrument that allows real-time music making even by players without significant musical or computing skills," Helmer said in a statement.

A sinewy figure in a swimming-pool-blue T-shirt, his eyes obscured by a beige baseball cap, was playing electric guitar. Sun poured through the window behind him; he played in a yellow haze. The video was called simply “guitar.” A black-and-white title card gave the performer’s name as funtwo.

'I would not work with those guys again,' says singer

NEW YORK (Billboard) -- Rhino has set an August 15 release date for expanded editions of the first two albums from TV stars turned pop idols the Monkees -- but don't expect any reunions of the four band members.

Owing to a history of intra-band acrimony, the Monkees last toured with all four original members in 1997. Minus Michael Nesmith, members Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Davy Jones subsequently hit the road on several occasions but have no plans to work together in the future.
