Steel Workers Speak Out

JOHNSTOWN -- Jeff Baxter has been a steel worker, making railroad cars, for more than 30 years. Today his future and the future of 450 of his peers are very uncertain.

Freightcar America CEO John Carroll has announced imminent layoffs.

"I wouldn't want to step in his shoes, 'cause I couldn't live with myself," said Baxter. "It's greed. It's pure greed."

Carroll said the Johnstown plant is too expensive to run and that wants to use out-of-state plants instead. He asked the workers to give back about $15 an hour in benefits, but has Carroll made any sacrifices?

"Go on the Internet and see what Mr. Carroll is getting when he leaves and what he's gotten over the last five years. It's more money than I could ever spend," said Baxter. "Last year he made $36 million."

Carroll told Channel 6 News that he doesn't know how much he made last year. According to documents obtained by Channel 6, his base salary is $550,000. The company also pays for his country club membership, and he'll get $1.5 million when he retires in April. When asked about it, Carroll said, "It has nothing to do with what management makes. It has to do with how much production costs."

Workers said they will keep building railroad cars for the company but they hope Carroll's replacement has a different view of things.

SOMERSET COUNTY -- Blond hair, blue eyes, and model looks can get you into the movies and in this case it doesn't hurt to be a Siberian Husky. Meet Mojo and Sir Prize, a.k.a. Truman and Dewy. They are two of the four Somerset County dogs that star in Disneys latest movie.

Back in 2003, Husky breeders Lorraine Barron and her daughter Laura were contacted by Disney to look at a few of their dogs for an upcoming movie.

They said they'd let us know and we thought oh, we'd never hear from them because this is a country kennel and everything, says Lorraine.

But to their surprise, Disney did get back to them and even made Mojo the movie's lead.

Its very exciting to have dogs in the movies here, says Lorraine.

Between the winter of 2003 and spring of 2005 the dogs left Somerset County twice; filming for 11 months in Canada and Greenland. Unfortunately the Barrons had to stay home, but Disney kept in close contact with them letting them know the dogs were doing fine. While filming abroad, the two movie stars were trained, however the Barrons have no idea what kind of secret powers the dogs now possess.

They didn't tell us what they had taught them to do. They said we'd have to wait until the movie came out, couldn't tell us about the movie, says Lorraine.

One thing is for sure; Disney fell in love with Mojo.

Disney wanted to buy Mojo and we told them no, but he will be available here if they decide to do a sequel, says Lorraine.

And there's no doubt these "hams" will be ready.

Eight below opens Friday. You'll get a change to meet Mojo and Sir Prize this weekend. They will be at the Palace Theatre in Somerset for the movie on Saturday at 1:00 P.M.
