John Grisham has no illusions about writing

NEW YORK (AP) -- Some things John Grisham knows: He got 15 rejections before his first book, "A Time to Kill," was published. He made $9 million last year. He's not James Joyce or William Faulkner. He's an entertainer.

"I'm not sure where that line goes between literature and popular fiction," the mega-selling author says. "I can assure you I don't take myself serious enough to think I'm writing literary fiction and stuff that's going to be remembered in 50 years. I'm not going to be here in 50 years; I don't care if I'm remembered or not. It's pure entertainment."

His goal: to write a page every day. Sometimes that would take 10 minutes, sometimes an hour; ofttimes he would write for two hours before he had to turn to his job as a lawyer, which he never especially enjoyed. In the Mississippi Legislature, there were "enormous amounts of wasted time" that would give him the opportunity to write.

Today at 7:45 we did a segment on body language with former FBI agent specializing in non-verbal behavior Joe Navarro. He and Matt outlined a few different scenarios in life where body language comes into play and gave tips on how people can recognize certain behaviors based on the non-verbal clues people give.

Scheduling a meeting? Send an e-mail. Need that report right away? Send an e-mail. Are there serious issues in the department? Nothing a chain of e-mails can't solve.

The volume of e-mails has exploded in recent years with over 170 billion now being sent daily around the globe, according to technology market researcher Radacati Group. That's two million every second.

Eventually, the policy won over staff members. Forced to use the phone, employee John Coyle learned that a co-worker who he thought was across the country was, in fact, across the hall.

"I asked him where he was and he said I'm on the fourth floor, and I said, 'Well so am I,'" said Coyle. "We now have a working relationship that is deeper than he's the guy that provides reports."

The OVERnote

If you're like me, you live your life on post-its. Everything from grocery lists, to new ideas, to super important phone numbers that I should never, ever lose. It means that when I'm looking for that super important number, I have to look through every other post-it to find the one I want.

The OVERnote is something I came up with to help me navigate this paper sea. Now my notes are self-catagorizing and I can find things at a glance.

Yahoo Bookmarks Enters 21st Century.

Yahoo is unveiling an entirely new Bookmarks product this evening at new.bookmarks.yahoo.com - new interface, new back-end, the works. A screencast created by Yahoo developer Tom Chi is here which gives an excellent overview of the service (Chi also created the background music for the screencast). Compare that to the existing Bookmarks product (screenshot is here) and it’s clear how significant the overhaul is.

Yahoo Bookmarks, while invisible to most cutting edge web users, still claims around 20 million active users (compared to only 1 million for del.icio.us).

The new Bookmarks product is also integrated with a new version of Yahoo Toolbar for Internet Explorer, allowing for one-click bookmarking. Searches on the Toolbar search bar also auto-complete to suggest bookmarks stored for that user.

In a briefing today, Yahoo said they may eventually begin integrating user Bookmarks directly into search results (they integrate My Web bookmarks in a very minimal way already). This could pose a competitive problem for new search startups like Wink, which already combine traditional search results with user-generated bookmarks.

Architectures of Participation: The Next Big Thing

Well, it seems to be finally happening. The Web 2.0 sites are starting to bubble up -- no pun intended -- to the very top of the traffic charts, with MySpace and then YouTube eclipsing each other in weeks. The Guardian reported yesterday that YouTube is now commanding 3.9% of all Internet traffic, making it the #1 site on the Internet. That's more than impressive given that they only started out in February, 2005. I've been covering MySpace and YouTube in my last two pieces (one, two) because they in particular seem to represent leading edge best practices in the social architectures of large-scale public Web sites. Ostensibly very "Web 2.0", both MySpace and YouTube aggressively "harness the collective intelligence" of their user's combined contributions as their primary offering to the world. In this sense, they have put their architectures of participation at the core of their product design. And wouldn't you know it, it's made them both leaders on the world stage.

John Walsh should also be commended for his years of efforts on this and on various other areas of helping people. He took a terrible situation and did something very positive. I am sure his son would have been extremely proud.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, joined by "America's Most Wanted" host John Walsh, signed a new law Thursday that requires convicted child molesters to be listed on a national Internet database and face a felony charge for failing to update their whereabouts.

President Bush shakes hands Thursday with John Walsh of "America's Most Wanted."

"Our nation grieves with every family that's suffered the unbearable pain of a child who's been abducted or abused," Bush said in a bill-signing ceremony in the Rose Garden. "This law takes an important step forward in this country's efforts to protect those who cannot protect themselves."

The measure was named for Walsh's 6-year-old son, Adam, who was abducted exactly 25 years ago Thursday, and subsequently murdered.

It aims to help police find more than 100,000 sex offenders by creating the first national online listing available to the public and searchable by ZIP code. It also called for harsh federal punishment for sexually assaulting children, including the possibility of the death penalty when a victim is murdered.

MashupCamp is getting underway this morning at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. About 300 mashers have gathered to geek out on the latest innovations in Web- based applications. As my colleague and MashupCamp head counselor David Berlind said, it's the "only event where mashup developers get to rub shoulders with API providers, mashup enablers – for example, The Eclipse Foundation(attending!) – and other mashup developers in a way that can only accelerate the evolution and pace of innovation in the just now-emerging mashup ecosystem." Plenty of junk food, blogging, podcasting, and mashing up.
