On the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

In one case, Israeli interrogators beat 15-year-old Ibrahim S. over the course of several hours. Ibrahim was then threatened with sexual assault for the purpose of extracting his confession. The accusation, which Ibrahim kept denying, was that he had thrown stones at the Israeli army when it invaded his village the day before. A Military Court accepted Ibrahim’s confession and he was imprisoned in Israel for five months.

A 10-year-old boy was subjected to physical abuse amounting to torture for 2.5 hours by Israeli soldiers who stormed his family’s shop on 11 June, seeking information on the location of a handgun. The boy was repeatedly beaten, slapped and punched in the head and stomach, forced to hold a stress position for half and hour, and threatened. He was deeply shocked and lost two molar teeth as a result of the assault.

Four men formerly held at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq today filed lawsuits against US private security firms CACI and L-3, accusing the companies of torture and war crimes.

The lawsuits, filed in the US states of Washington, Maryland, Michigan, and Ohio, allege that the four detainees were subjected to frequent beatings, caging, electric shocks, and threatened with dogs.

One of the plaintiffs, a 36-year-old shopkeeper named Sa'adoon Ali Hameed Al-Ogaidi, claims he was a "ghost detainee" hidden from the Red Cross during his year at Abu Ghraib, the site of a now-infamous prisoner abuse scandal in 2003.

British Airways boss slams BAA over George Bush flights

British Airways has slammed Heathrow owner BAA for allowing George Bush to fly into the UK's biggest airport, forcing the cancellation of at least 69 flights and disrupting the travel plans of 40,000 passengers.

Willie Walsh, BA chief executive, said he was "angry" that the presidential entourage, which included two Boeing 747 jets and four helicopters, caused chaos 10 days ago as runways were closed and planes were grounded. "The decision to allow President Bush and his fleet of aircraft to fly into Heathrow rather than a military base was one all of Heathrow's users could have done without." He added: "I am also angry that this was allowed."

Polish WW2 War Criminal Escapes to Israel

Of 6,000 inmates that he was responsible for, that 1,695 people died under him "by deliberately giving low food rations, systematically torturing and mistreating prisoners, and failing to take sanitary precautions."

Zgoda camp was set up by the Soviet NKVD, the forerunner of the KGB, after the Red Army entered southern Poland. The camp was later handed over to the Communist Polish secret service, the notorious Urząd Bezpieczeństwa. In March 1945, Morel became a chief of the labour camp.

Israel has refused to extradite a Polish-born Jew accused of war crimes against Germans in World War II.

Solomon Morel, an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, is said to be responsible for the deaths of up to 1,500 prisoners.

General Accuses WH of War Crimes

The two-star general who led an Army investigation into the horrific detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib has accused the Bush administration of war crimes and is calling for accountability.

In his 2004 report on Abu Ghraib, then-Major General Anthony Taguba concluded that "numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses were inflicted on several detainees." He called the abuse "systemic and illegal." And, as Seymour M. Hersh reported in the New Yorker, he was rewarded for his honesty by being forced into retirement.

Now, in a preface to a Physicians for Human Rights report based on medical examinations of former detainees, Taguba adds an epilogue to his own investigation.

Senior Bush administration lawyers were actively involved in developing harsh interrogation techniques used in Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay far earlier than was previously known, according to a Senate investigation.

Legal advisors to the former US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, requested information about the techniques months before they had previously admitted to knowledge of them, the Senate armed services committee has found in a report to be published later this year.

The US department of defence is being sued over the suicide deaths of two Guantánamo Bay prisoners.

The New York-based Centre for Constitutional Rights, which represents dozens of Guantánamo detainees, said it was seeking unspecified damages on behalf of the families of Salah al-Salami and Yasser al-Zahrani, both Saudis.

The claim was announced yesterday, on the second anniversary of their deaths with another detainee from Yemen. All three hanged themselves inside their cells with bed sheets.

"After two years, there has still been no public accounting for what happened to these men," Pardiss Kebriaei, a lawyer at the centre, said in a statement.

The centre said it could not find the family of the Yemeni man.

Ethiopia accused of war crimes to quell insurgency

Ethiopia's government has committed extensive war crimes and crimes against humanity during a brutal counterinsurgency campaign in the remote Ogaden region, a report says today.

Human Rights Watch accuses the Ethiopian military of extrajudicial killings, rape, torture, forcibly displacing thousands of civilians and using food as a weapon of war in its attempts over the past year to defeat the Ogaden National Liberation Front, which claims to seek self-determination for the eastern region.

Satellite images published in the 130-page report show how villages have been burnt down to deny the rebels a support base - a tactic more often associated with the Darfur region of neighbouring Sudan.

The watchdog accuses the US, UK and other EU countries, who give Ethiopia £1bn a year in aid, of ignoring the abuses, thereby increasing the risk of further "devastation, famine and impoverishment in a region that already knows these trends too well".

People die at Israeli checkpoints because they cannot get to medical facilities. Palestinians are being denied water, food and medical supplies. Palestinians have to endure continual attacks by jets, helicopters and drones used for assassinations (which are illegal by international law) that also kill many civilians. According to Chris Hedges (http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19127.htm), since 2000, 1033 Israelis have died and 4,437 Palestinian have died from this conflict. 119 of these deaths were Israeli children and 971 have been Palestinian children. All these deaths are a waste of life, but these numbers also show that the fault is not equal between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The fault lies with the aggressor and the occupier. When people live under a brutal occupation, have their lands stolen, their houses destroyed, orchards wiped out by bulldozers

The peace movement cannot be concerned only with the war in Iraq. We have to look at the bigger picture of all wars to determine what’s going wrong in our country. This is especially true in regards to Palestine.

Many in the peace movement believe that the use of violence is proportionately equal between Palestinians and Israelis and that both sides are equally responsible for the bloodshed. This is not true. This is not an equal situation. Israel is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Gaza is one of the poorest and with one of the highest population densities in the world. Israel has the fourth strongest army in the world with a large arsenal of nuclear weapons, while the Palestinians have rifles, home-made rockets, and people willing to be used as suicide bombers.

It is reported that over the last six years, 12 Israelis have been killed by the rocket attacks.

But this does not compare to the thousands upon thousands of Palestinian deaths
