A Macedonian court has convicted a bear of theft and criminal damage for stealing honey from a beekeeper

The irate beekeeper initially fought off the attacks with thumping 'turbo-folk' music

he tried to distract the bear with lights and music because he had heard bears are afraid of tha

Kiseloski bought a generator, lit up the area and put on songs of (Serbian 'turbo-folk' star) Ceca

The bear stayed away for a few weeks, but came back when the generator ran out of power and the music fell silen

A court in the city of Bitola found the bear guilty, and since it had no owner and belonged to a protected species, ordered the state to pay the 140,000 denars (€2,243) damage it caused to the hives

The bear vs the beekeeper took a year in court to decide

The Sheridan Band is a high-energy traditional Celtic folk group. The band consists of four family members who were often asked to play their music at various family and community events. As others quickly discovered, a party breaks out wherever this group performs. The requests to perform have continued to pour in from Northern Ontario right down into Michigan.

RIAA: Transferring Music From Legally Bought CD to Computer is Illegal

We don’t normally post stuff like copyfight and the RIAA’s quest to quash music piracy through lawsuits (blogs like Boing Boing covered this subject well enough), but this recent article in the Washington Post is too good to pass up: apparently the RIAA now maintains that it’s illegal for you to transfer music from a legally bought CD to your computer!

In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry’s lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

clipper's remarks: The most previous gift that the Irish brought to America was our music. The best thing that you gave us back was our own music, refined and distilled and reinvigorated. The proof of this distillation was RIVERDANCE, which extracted every drop of Celtic blood on the planet, even the Chinese.

Along the way there were Irish music bands from the UK like the Pogues and Dexy's Midnight Runners, proving that Irish music is in the genes no matter where you are born. 20 years on and the Pogues are #1 for Christmas with "Fairytale of New York".

Personally, I could not play even a tin whistle but I was compensated and blessed with a heart and feet able to recognize good dance music from the walze to rock to Irish.

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen

collectively as 'The Emerald Express'. With the addition of new bass player, Giorgio Kilkenny this line-up recorded Too-Rye-Ay in 1982, a Celtic folk and soul hybrid. The first single, 'The Celtic Soul Brothers', was mildly successful but 'Come on Eileen' soon followed, and became a Number One hit in both the UK and the United States.

With the singles, 'Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)' (a Van Morrison cover) and 'Let's Get This Straight (From The Start)' maintaining their popularity, the group continued to tour until 1983

Dexy's returned in 1985 with the critically-acclaimed album, Don't Stand Me Down, featuring Rowland, Adams, O'Hara and Nicky Gatfield together with various seasoned performers

The name Planxty comes from a word used by the classic harper Turlough O'Carolan in many of his works, and is thought to mean a tribute to a particular person ("Planxty Irwin", for example, being a tribute to Colonel John Irwin of Sligo). "Planxty" is believed to be a corruption of the Irish word and popular toast "sláinte", meaning "good health". 'Bard of Armagh' Tommy Makem Dies in US. Clancy Bros fame

"In life, Tommy brought happiness and joy to hundreds of thousands of fans the world over," she said. "Always the consummate musician, he was also a superb ambassador for the country, and one of whom we will always be proud."

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Seamus Brennan said he had learned of Mr Makem's death "with great regret".

"He was a multi-talented artist whose abilities went beyond music, with other skills as a storyteller, actor, songwriter and poet. I wish to pass on my condolences to Tommy's family, relatives and friends at this sad time and hope that they can take comfort from the fact that his music is a wonderful legacy that will live on for generations to come," he said.

Musician Tommy Makem dies aged 74

Celebrated traditional musician Tommy Makem (74) has died of lung cancer in New Hampshire.

Makem, who played banjo and tin whistle and sang in a deep baritone, came to international prominence as a member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.

Makem was born in Keady, Co Armagh, in 1932. During the 1960s, he gained international fame with the Clancy Brothers, performing sellout concerts in Carnegie Hall and being feted at the Newport Folk Festival.

His best-known songs include Four Green Fields, Red Is The Rose and The Bard of Armagh .

"Tommy was a man of high integrity and honesty and his courage really showed through towards the end," he told RTÉ's Morning Ireland today. "Our paths diverged many times, but our friendship never waned. I suppose he was my brother in every way.

Makem visited Belfast last month to receive an honorary degree from the University of Ulster despite his illness and also took time to return to Armagh.
