Israeli military continues to torture Palestinian children

On the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

In one case, Israeli interrogators beat 15-year-old Ibrahim S. over the course of several hours. Ibrahim was then threatened with sexual assault for the purpose of extracting his confession. The accusation, which Ibrahim kept denying, was that he had thrown stones at the Israeli army when it invaded his village the day before. A Military Court accepted Ibrahim’s confession and he was imprisoned in Israel for five months.

A 10-year-old boy was subjected to physical abuse amounting to torture for 2.5 hours by Israeli soldiers who stormed his family’s shop on 11 June, seeking information on the location of a handgun. The boy was repeatedly beaten, slapped and punched in the head and stomach, forced to hold a stress position for half and hour, and threatened. He was deeply shocked and lost two molar teeth as a result of the assault.

The US department of defence is being sued over the suicide deaths of two Guantánamo Bay prisoners.

The New York-based Centre for Constitutional Rights, which represents dozens of Guantánamo detainees, said it was seeking unspecified damages on behalf of the families of Salah al-Salami and Yasser al-Zahrani, both Saudis.

The claim was announced yesterday, on the second anniversary of their deaths with another detainee from Yemen. All three hanged themselves inside their cells with bed sheets.

"After two years, there has still been no public accounting for what happened to these men," Pardiss Kebriaei, a lawyer at the centre, said in a statement.

The centre said it could not find the family of the Yemeni man.

The US military said the suicides prompted a complete review of operations at the detention centre in Cuba.

The military would release the results of its investigation of the deaths when the findings were ready, he said.

Guantánamo Bay: Pentagon 'was warned over interrogation methods'

Senior Bush administration lawyers were actively involved in developing harsh interrogation techniques used in Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay far earlier than was previously known, according to a Senate investigation.

Legal advisors to the former US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, requested information about the techniques months before they had previously admitted to knowledge of them, the Senate armed services committee has found in a report to be published later this year.

The investigation proves high-ranking officials, including the Pentagon's then general counsel, William "Jim" Haynes, were involved early on in the development of more aggressive methods. What a system. What an advert for American 'democracy'. Were the Nazis as unjust as this never mind China. I know one thing for absolute certainty; one country is moving forward while the other is racing backwards.

Most countries make at least a pretence at dispensing justice to its foes while Bush appears to intend to deliberately offend normal basic standards and to goad even more terrorism to justify his misnomer 'War on Terror'.

He was bolted to the floor and secured to a chair, his hands and legs cuffed.
He had been held in isolation since August 8, nearly four months earlier.
He was dehydrated and in need of regular hook-ups to an intravenous drip.
His feet were swollen.
He was urinating on himself.

The pattern was always the same: 20-hour interrogation sessions, followed by four hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation appears as a central theme, along with stress positions and constant humiliation, including sexual humiliation. These techniques were supplemented by the use of water, regular bouts of dehydration, the use of IV tubes, loud noise, nudity, female contact, pin-ups. An interrogator even tied a leash to him, led him around the room and forced him to perform a series of dog tricks. He was forced to wear a woman's bra and a thong was placed on his head.

Recently there was a sex/cult event in Texas. In comparison with this it was a non-event. This has been kept hushed up. Why? Is it because of the involvement of a Haredi Orthodox Rabbi as the prime torturer? Recently another child abuser in Australia was given safe haven in Israel.

Is it opportune while the pope seeks forgiveness in the USA, that abuse of children that would put the Nazis to shame would see the light of day in the 'free and fair' USA media. Is there a word on this atrocity? What society allowed this to happen? This was no overnight phenomenon. What religion sees it as creed to torture children beyond what would be acceptable to the worst criminal or terrorist? How sick is the society?

A young Texas father has been found guilty today of badly injuring his infant daughter by putting her in a microwave

The jurors rejected 20-year-old Joshua Mauldin's argument that he was insane

They will now consider evidence on how to sentence him

He could face anything from probation to life in prison

Mauldin claimed he was going through a psychotic episode when he put two-month-old Ana in a microwave for 10 to 20 seconds in May

But prosecutors said Mauldin knowingly hurt his daughter because he was angry about being stuck in a loveless marriage

Ana was badly burned and part of one ear had to be amputated. Officials say she is still receiving treatment, but is doing well

Spain yesterday dropped its attempt to extradite two British residents who had been freed from Guantánamo Bay, after accepting that torture they suffered during five years of American custody had left them too weak to stand tria

accused of being members of an al-Qaida cell in Madrid, were detained on their return to Britain in December on a European arrest warrant issued by Spain

The Madrid judge who issued the warrant, Baltasar Garzon, accepted British medical reports which found the men were suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other serious medical conditions

Banna is said to be severely depressed, suffering from PTSD, and to have diabetes, hypertension and back pain, as well as damage to the back of his left knee

Deghayes is also suffering from PTSD, and depression, is blind in his right eye, and has fractures in his nasal bone and his right index finger. Both men are said to be at high risk of suicide
