Story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett sung By Jim Mc.Cann

When Grace Gifford, the sister-in-law of Tomas MacDonagh, picked Easter Sunday 1916 as the date on which she was to marry Joseph Plunkett she had obviously no idea of the tragic events ahead of them. Days before the planned wedding Joseph Plunkett, who suffered his entire life under respiration troubles, was admitted to the hospital and underwent an emergency operation.

On Easter Monday 1916, the day after the postponed wedding, Plunkett manned his post in the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin to take part in the Easter Rising.

After the surrender of the rebels Joseph Plunkett was arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol. Just hours before his execution on 4 May 1916 he married Grace Gifford in the jail chapel with two prison guards as witnesses.

Grace Gifford remained involved in the republican movement, especially in Sinn FÃ©in, while earning a living as commercial artist.

clipper's remarks: This was an exceptional Man. He left school at 11.5 years. He was severely dyslexic. He could not READ nor WRITE with difficulty signing his name. Despite this, he was an exceptionally talented song writer. He had a most unusual voice and was best in duets particularly with his daughter.

It was while working as a labourer that he came in contact with asbestos that has now killed him 35 years later. He knew he was dying but thought he had longer.

Christie is Patron to the Irish charity "Children in Crossfire". His special focus is on the schools literacy programmes, as Christie is unable to read or write himself

He suffered from severe dyslexia which was not picked at school.

Christie left school at 11½ (the ½ he says is important). At 15 he went to work on building sites in London by day and played in the R&B clubs by night

Jean MacColl, the singer’s mother, compared the song with a play. “These are a couple of characters, Irish immigrants not in the first flush of youth and this is the way they spoke,” “Shane [MacGowan] wrote the most beautiful song and you really feel for these characters. Radio 1 reverses decision to censor Pogues hit

BBC was forced into an embarrassing reversal after overturning a decision to censor the word “faggot” from the popular Christmas song A Fairytale of New York

Fans complained after Radio 1 “bleeped” the word from the song recorded in 1987 by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl

The station said that it could be offensive to homosexuals

The story of two lovers who trade insults on Christmas Eve, includes the line: “You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot, Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God it’s our last.”

Radio 1 had played the song in full for 20 years but the Head of Music decided to censor the track after it soared up the Christmas chart once again, citing changing tastes

Japan pulls out of coalition

Japan's government has ordered its navy to end its mission in support of coalition forces in Afghanistan after failing to win opposition backing to renew the deployment before today's midnight deadline

Since 2001, Japan has provided about 126m gallons of fuel to US, British and other vessels operating in the Indian Ocean.

The two Japanese ships on duty - the supply ship Tokiwa and the destroyer Kirisame - are expected back home in about three weeks

The withdrawal was a blow to US efforts to keep the coalition together

Several senior US officials have publicly urged Mr Ozawa to think again and yesterday the ambassadors of the US, Britain and nine other countries met dozens of Japanese MPs to stress the value of the country's contribution

The John (Rover) McCann referred to was my maternal grand uncle. The Irish National Foresters hall was part of our first house, the band room first moving 3 doors up and then 1 house down. I never could not hear the band practising.

Thomas Ashe then schoolmaster of Cardiff school and also a member of the hurling club had obtained a set of bagpipes from Paddy White the marathon runner.

The origin of this flag goes back to the Battle of Clontarf when Brien Boru captured the Black Raven Flag from the Danes

after the Rising in 1916 they were interned in England. On Easter Sunday they played at a function held by the Irish National Foresters at Lusk.

The history of Ashbourne becomes the history of the Black Raven Band for this period because may of the lads fought in that engagement and the aftermath resulted in the Band being practically suspended till the General Amnesty of June 1917

clipper's remarks: The Fureys are an Irish male folk band. They also sometimes record as the The Fureys and Davey Arthur. The group formed in 1974 and consisted initially of 4 brothers. They mixed their traditional Irish musical roots with mainstream Anglo-American pop. The band later met Davey Arthur and had their biggest commercial successes working with him.

The single 'When You Were Sweet Sixteen reached number fourteen in the British charts, whilst they also had two top forty albums called "Golden Days" and "At the End of the Day".
