When
asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers,
“No, I did not eat the last cookie.”

• Gestures/expressions don’t match the verbal statement,

Peppered with medieval villages, the hillside scenery is certainly picturesque.

But it is deep underground, buried into the ancient rock, that the region's greatest wonders are concealed.

Hall of the Earth: An amazing room built on the 'supernatural' visions of its creator

Here, 100ft down and hidden from public view, lies an astonishing secret - one that has drawn comparisons with the fabled city of Atlantis and has been dubbed 'the Eighth Wonder of the World' by the Italian government.

For weaving their way underneath the hillside are nine ornate temples, on five levels, whose scale and opulence take the breath away.

It must be definitive. It must be personal — that's the difference between an aphorism and a proverb. It must be philosophical — that's the difference between an aphorism and a platitude, which is not philosophical....

And the fifth law is it must have a twist. And that can be either a linguistic twist or a psychological twist or even a twist in logic that somehow flips the reader into a totally unexpected place.
Now you know, so get to work!

Clip Source: www.npr.org

Hubbard, Frank McKinney (United States, 1868-1930)

A good listener is usually thinking about something else.

Nobody ever forgets where he buried the hatchet.

Roosevelt, Eleanor (United States, 1884-1962)

A woman is like a teabag — only in hot water do you realize how strong she is.

Tutu, Desmond (South Africa, 1931- )

When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own
body the liar takes up less space.

• A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

Emotional Gestures & Contradiction

• Timing and duration of emotional gestures and emotions are
off a normal pace. The display of emotion is delayed, stays longer it
          would naturally, then stops suddenly.

• Timing is off between emotions gestures/expressions and words.
Example: Someone says "I love it!" when receiving a gift,
and then smile after making that statement, rather then at the same
          time the statement is made.

• Gestures/expressions don’t match the verbal statement,
such as frowning when saying “I love you.”

Interactions and Reactions

• A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often
          go on the offensive.

• A liar is uncomfortable facing his questioner/accuser and
may turn his head or body away.

• A liar might unconsciously place objects (book, coffee cup,
          etc.) between themselves and you.

Verbal Context and Content

• A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When
asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers,
“No, I did not eat the last cookie.”

• The guilty person may speak more than natural, adding unnecessary
details to convince you... they are not comfortable with silence or
          pauses in the conversation.

• Words may be garbled and spoken softly, and syntax and grammar
          may be off. In other
Researchers have thawed ice estimated to be perhaps a million years old or more from above Lake Vostok, an ancient lake that lies hidden more than two miles beneath the frozen surface of Antarctica using novel genomic techniques to determine how tiny, living "time capsules" survived the ages in total darkness, in
freezing cold, and without food and energy from the sun.

Lake Vostok is located beneath four kilometers of ice in East Antarctica. The lake is approximately 250 km long and 50 km wide. The overlying ice provides a continuous paleo-climatic record of 400,000 years, although the lake water itself may have been isolated for as long as 15 million years.

Because of the long isolation, it's believed that Lake Vostok could contain new lifeforms, and unique geochemical processes. For five years, scientists in Russia and the United States have sought to probe the ancient lake to discover the secrets lying inside this pristine body of water.

Tags: antarctica, lake, water, genomics, ice, time, life

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2007/12/secret-life-o-1.html</clipSource>

Eighty million years without sex

clipped by: invictus

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

The mystery of how an animal has survived for 80 million years without sex has been solved by UK scientists.

A Cambridge team says the creature owes its existence to a genetic quirk that offers some recompense for its prolonged celibacy.

Many asexual organisms have died out because they cannot adapt to changes in the natural world.

But an evolutionary trick allows this pond-dweller to survive when conditions change, researchers report in Science.

The animal is a tiny invertebrate known as a bdelloid rotifer. It lives in freshwater pools. If deprived of water, it survives in a desiccated state until water becomes available again.

The secret to this novel survival mechanism lies in a twist of asexual reproduction, whereby the animal is able to make two separate proteins from two different copies of a key gene.

Rankin’s study of sarcasm — at least, nothing worth your important time. All she did was use an M.R.I. to find the place in the brain where the ability to detect sarcasm resides. But then, you probably already knew it was in the right parahippocampal gyrus.

What you may not have realized is that perceiving sarcasm, the smirking put-down that buries its barb by stating the opposite, requires a nifty mental trick that lies at the heart of social relations: figuring out what others are thinking. Those who lose the ability, whether through a head injury or the frontotemporal dementias afflicting the patients in Dr. Rankin’s study, just do not get it when someone says during a hurricane, “Nice weather we’re having.”

Tags: science, sarcasm

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/03/health/research/03sarc.html?ref=science</clipSource>

Bush: "Far too many people know far too much."
