After a successful amateur career, including winning the Walker Cup with the Great Britain & Ireland team in 1995, he turned professional later that year, joining the European Tour in 1996. He came to professional golf at a relatively late age, having qualified as an accountant and worked in the business for a number of years.

He has spent a considerable amount of time both in the top ten of the Official World Golf Rankings and as the highest ranked European golfer, his best ranking being third, which he achieved following his second Open Championship victory.

He has also played for Europe in four Ryder Cups; losing in 1999 but winning in 2002, 2004 and 2006. He has also won the par-3 contest at the Augusta National Golf Club.

clipper's remarks: Like America, we had out War of Independence followed by a bloody Civil War on the issue of independence. This was also in common with many other states that gained independence.

We didn't gain full independence until 1948 when we took it without a shot being fired. We did lose 6 of our 9 counties of Ulster, our northern providence. Hopefully some day our "four green fields" will be reunited peacefully.

By Bush&Co's definition all our leaders would have been terrorists like Nelson Mandela, just like your own revered insurrectionists/freedom fighters/terrorists/founding fathers. Our longest serving PM and president de Valera would have been executed along with the 1916 Rising leaders only he was born in America.

The original Bill to punish anyone who might decide to set off nuclear weapons in Ireland was not exactly overly harsh on offenders.

It provided a humble district court judge the power to impose a €5,000 fine and a 12-month jail term.

Now offenders -- including any would-be Dr Strangegloves -- would see their trial going forward to the Central Criminal Court, where sentences might better fit the crime.

Now the issue is back on the order paper, decreeing that "a person who carries out, or causes the carrying out of, a nuclear explosion in the State shall be guilty of an offence".

The provisions also make it an offence here for an Irish citizen to carry out or to cause to be carried out, a nuclear explosion in Ireland, elsewhere on the planet, or in space.

The crowning of a king has always been cause for celebration. In the small town of Killorglin in the south-west corner of Ireland, it still is -- with a hitch. The king in question is a goat.

"King Puck" is one of the last regents of Ireland, though his reign is a short one -- from August 10 to 12 every year. Nevertheless, the small Irish town of Killorglin (about 100 km. from Cork) has been crowing King Puck since (officially) 1610. The goat-fawning fair is one of the oldest of Ireland's traditional rural celebrations -- and one of its better known.

Story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett sung By Jim Mc.Cann

When Grace Gifford, the sister-in-law of Tomas MacDonagh, picked Easter Sunday 1916 as the date on which she was to marry Joseph Plunkett she had obviously no idea of the tragic events ahead of them. Days before the planned wedding Joseph Plunkett, who suffered his entire life under respiration troubles, was admitted to the hospital and underwent an emergency operation.

On Easter Monday 1916, the day after the postponed wedding, Plunkett manned his post in the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin to take part in the Easter Rising.

After the surrender of the rebels Joseph Plunkett was arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol. Just hours before his execution on 4 May 1916 he married Grace Gifford in the jail chapel with two prison guards as witnesses.

Grace Gifford remained involved in the republican movement, especially in Sinn FÃ©in, while earning a living as commercial artist.

clipper's remarks: Is it a joke of history that before there was the states of Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Syria, etc there was Palestine? Now they all exist and Palestine doesn't yet.

You will read that there never was a Palestine from a certain quarter and how can you miss what you never had. How you know they are lying! They'll say that as they are all Arabs that there's enough room for them all. It's like saying that the Scots Welsh and Irish are all Celts and one state would do them all! Yes, there was a time when such thinking was regarded as valid. If we had the Age of Imperialism back then the Brits might validly have a claim on the USA and most of the rest of the world.

In the present imperialism, if the existent holder of the gunboat diplomacy role, the USA, decided to sort out Palestine's present difficulties it could in a breath. Hopefully in a more honourable fashion that the last gunboat holder did.

Train drove over two drunken men

Two men, who had a miraculous escape when a train drove over them while they were lying drunk and asleep on railway tracks, were warned yesterday that they were within a hair's breadth of going to jail for their outrageous behaviour.

As he approached Shannonbridge he saw two bodies on the tracks and despite pressing on the brakes and sounding the emergency siren neither body moved.

The train passed over both men and when the driver stopped he saw two heads underneath the train, the court heard. Miraculously, neither of the defendants was injured and one of the men managed to get out from under the train himself while the other man was pulled out

Judge O'Donnell sentenced each of the accused to six months in jail but agreed to suspend the sentences provided they each be of good behaviour for two years. He also fined them €300 each
