A 10-year-old boy was subjected to physical abuse amounting to torture for 2.5 hours by Israeli soldiers who stormed his family’s shop on 11 June, seeking information on the location of a handgun. For instance, several African and Micronesian societies practice testicular ablation—the crushing or cutting off of one testicle. Some Australian aborigines engage in subincision, which exposes part of the urethra and thus causes sperm to leak out of the base of the penis. Circumcision does not have quite such clear-cut effects. But there are several ways it may affect fertility: most obviously, the lack of a foreskin could make insertion, ejaculation or both take longer. Perhaps long enough that an illicit quickie will not always reach fruition.

Older men are in a position to form alliances with younger men—passing on knowledge, lending them political support and giving them access to weapons. By insisting that the young undergo genital mutilation of some form as a quid pro quo, an older married man can seek to ensure that even if he is cuckolded, he will still be the father of his wives’ children.

Clip Source: www.economist.com

CIRCUMCISION and other forms of male-genital mutilation are commonplace in many societies around the world. The origin of these practices, however, puzzles anthropologists and evolutionary biologists

Explanations have ranged from the pragmatic (a ritual that marks the beginning of adulthood and bonds men together) to the Freudian (having something to do with the pain of the separation from the mother). However Christopher Wilson, a neurobiologist at Cornell University, has a different idea. In a recent paper in Evolution and Human Behavior he suggests that male-genital mutilations are actually intended to prevent younger men from fathering children with older men’s wives.

Tags: science

<clipSource>http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11579114</clipSource>

Angry Aborigines seek ban on Uluru tourists

clipped by: righthand

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Angry Aborigines seek ban on Uluru tourists

Clip Source: www.ballarat.edu.au

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Australian Aborigines have threatened to stop tourists from climbing the iconic rock formation Uluru in protest at government intervention in indigenous communities.

The warning comes a year after police and soldiers moved in to tackle high rates of social dysfunction in 73 remote Australian Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, where alcohol abuse, gambling and the sexual assault of children was said to be rife.

Clip Source: farm1.static.flickr.com

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

The so-called 'intervention' action was initiated by the former conservative Prime Minister, John Howard, prompted by a report that said children were being sexually mistreated in the poverty-stricken Outback communities. "I was taught that if you see a person drowning," she said, "you must jump into the water to save them, whether you can swim or not."

Irena Sendler

When the Nazis occupying Poland began rounding up Jews in 1940 and sending them to the Warsaw ghetto, Sendler plunged in.

With daring and ingenuity, she saved the lives of more than 2,500 Jews, most of them children, a feat that went largely unrecognized until the last years of her life.

The lesson Sendler taught them was that "one person can make a difference," Megan Felt, one of the authors of the play, said Monday.

Tags: courage, truth, compasion, history

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/la-me-sendler13-2008may13,0,2296979.story?track=ntothtml</clipSource>

Eastern Travel - 'Toy Trains'

clipped by: righthand
clipper's remarks: "The Japanese have taken the idea of ‘child-friendly public transport’ to the next level with these 2 beauties, both designed by eiji mitooka. he was the artistic force behind ‘omoden’ (toy train) and ‘ichigo ec’ (strawberry train), a couple of regional trains which travel on a daily basis on the 14.3km kishigawa line in japan. the Japanese are intent on making train travel a more comfortable experience for everyone, women and children especially, and the results are incredible.

Both trains contain hundreds of toys, TV screens showing cartoons, immaculately clean wooden flooring and cots for younger children. Call me cynical but I can’t imagine anything like this emerging in the UK unless it was an attraction at a theme park."

Clip Source: deputy-dog.com

ever been on a train this nice?

 post a comment
