A lightning bolt killed three Cambodian football players and put three others in hospital at a match in the south-east Asian nation's capital played during a monsoon season thunderstorm, officials said today.

The president of the Cambodian Soccer Federation, Sao Sokha, told Reuters the victims, all in their 20s, were taking part in a tournament organised by the government to introduce youngsters to the game and to build the strength of the national team.

Muscular bronze stallion with weird human genitalia advertises provincial hotel

A bronze sculpture of a stallion holding a piece of rail in its mouth was built last week in the yard of Yar Hotel

The stallion has a short-cut tail and the well-marked reproductive organ which greatly resembles the one of a man

Maxim Dikunov named his stallion Yaryzh and said that it symbolizes the struggle between nature and civilization.

According to Maxim’s mother, the management of Yar Hotel arranged a contest to choose the sculpture which could perfectly express the atmosphere of the hotel. A lot of sketches were suggested to the hotel administration. Finally they choose the stallion.

When the sculptor’s father was asked about the stallion’s human sex organ he said that “it is just a matter of nature and peopel should not stick noses in it.”

Yana Chernyshova, the hotel’s director, said that she liked this sculpture very much.

She said that the artist exceeded her expectations

A woman fell into a tank of slurry as she tried to make "manure bombs" using her stockings, German police today said.

The unfortunate woman stripped off her foul smelling clothes and fled the scene naked, along with a female accomplice wearing just her bra and pants, a police spokesman told Reuters.

June 23, 2008 -- Ireland could become a key player in the production of biofuel from seaweed, scientists told a conference in the west of the country on Monday.

Power Player

Seaweed has long been investigated as a potential source of bioethanol, which is typically made from crops such as sugar cane and corn, but technological barriers remain to its commercial use.

With rich seaweed resources, "Ireland is poised to become an important player in the next generation of biofuel production," said Stefan Kraan, head of the Irish Seaweed Center at the National University of Ireland in Galway.

"Algae do not have the negative image of terrestrial biomass resources, which are said to be responsible for higher food prices, impacting on water use, biodiversity and destruction of rain forest," he said.

The annual conference of the International Society for Applied Phycology (the scientific study of algae) is examining the economic and social aspects of using brown seaweeds for bioethanol production.

China today said 12 officials have been sacked for dereliction of duty in response to last month's earthquake that killed more than 69,000 people.

The supervision minister, Ma Wen, said her department had received 1,178 complaints involving officials' responses to the May 12 quake and had dealt with more than 1,000 of them.

Rescuers in the Philippines are searching for survivors from the capsizing of a ferry carrying more than 740 people after a typhoon lashed the region.

The head of the Philippines Red Cross, Richard Gordon, told local radio that the death toll from the typhoon stood at 155 people, according to Reuters.

The Catalan Atlas

The Catalan Atlas, is the finest work to come from the Majorcan cartographic school of the fourteenth century. Most probably produced in 1375 (the date that appears on the perpetual calendar accompanying the maps) and attributed, though without certainty, to Cresques Abraham , the atlas was already recorded in Charles V's library, in the inventory drawn up by Gilles Malet and copied by Jean Blanchet in 1380

The Catalan Atlas was originally composed of 6 vellum leaves folded down the middle ; the leaves are now cut in half. They are painted in various colors, gold, and silver ; each half-leaf is mounted on one side of five wooden panels

These texts emphasize the earth's spherical shape and the state of the known world ; they also provide useful information to sailors on tides and how to reckon time at night.

Despite the map's rather approximate cartographical design, many Indian and Chinese cities can be identified.

The Congo basin forest is home to around 50 million people in six countries including Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Congo-Brazzaville.

The Congo basin forest is twice the size of France and exceeded in size only by the Amazon. It is estimated that logging - much of it illegal - destroys an area the size of 25,000 football pitches every week.

The UN estimates that at present rates two-thirds of the forest will have vanished by the year 2040.
