Turkish party fights for survival after foiled coup attempt

Turkey's governing party mounted a desperate legal fight for its survival today as documents allegedly showed it had been the target of a foiled coup attempt planned to begin next week.

Facing prosecution demands that it be closed and its leaders banished from politics, the Justice and Development party (AKP) denied accusations that it was seeking to impose sharia law.

Of 6,000 inmates that he was responsible for, that 1,695 people died under him "by deliberately giving low food rations, systematically torturing and mistreating prisoners, and failing to take sanitary precautions."

Zgoda camp was set up by the Soviet NKVD, the forerunner of the KGB, after the Red Army entered southern Poland. The camp was later handed over to the Communist Polish secret service, the notorious Urząd Bezpieczeństwa. In March 1945, Morel became a chief of the labour camp.

Solomon Morel, an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, is said to be responsible for the deaths of up to 1,500 prisoners.

MANDELA Arrives for 90th. Birthday Party

clipper's remarks: Friday's concert coincides with the 20th anniversary of London's Free Mandela concert, which was held to demand his release from prison. He had been convicted as a [b]TERRORIST by the APARTHEID regime.

He was freed in 1990 after 27 years behind bars, and was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994.

He will be 90 on July 18. He has visited London many times and has expressed gratitude for the constant vigil that was held outside the South African embassy in the city during the APARTHEID years.

Nelson Mandela arrives in London for birthday concert

Nelson Mandela arrived in London today for a week of events to celebrate his 90th birthday.

An outdoor concert in honour of the former South African president will be held at Hyde Park on Friday, with performers including Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis, Queen and the Soweto gospel choir.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the Aids charity 46664, which is named after the number Mandela wore while imprisoned by South Africa's apartheid authorities.

CENTREVILLE, Md. June 22, 2008 (AP)

For four centuries, they were the ultimate pack rats. Now a Maryland family's massive collection of letters, maps and printed bills has surfaced in the attic of a former plantation, providing a firsthand account of life from the 1660s through World War II.

Goodheart is working with state archivists and a crew of four student interns to collect the documents, which were found stuffed into boxes, barrels and peach baskets.

The documents include maps, letters, financial records, political posters, even a lock of hair from a letter dated Valentine's Day, 1801. There's a love poem from the 1830s (in which a young man graphically tells his sweetheart what he'd do if he sneaked into her room on a winter's night), along with war accounts and bills of sale from slaves and crops.

The papers come from several generations of the Emory family

Between February, 1948 and December,1948 the Israeli army systematically occupied the Palestinian villages and towns, expelled by force the population and in most cases also destroyed the houses, looted their belongings and took over their material and cultural possessions. This was the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

Erasing history

For ethnic cleansing to be an effective and successful operation you also have to wipe people out of memory and the Israelis are very good at it. They did it in two ways.

They built Jewish settlements over the Palestinian villages they expelled and quite often gave them names that reflected the Palestinian name as a kind of testimony to the Palestinians that this is totally now in the hands of Israel and there is no chance in the world of bringing the clock backwards.

The other way they did it is planting trees - usually European pine trees - over the ruins of the village and turning the village into recreational spaces
