Lambda, NCLR, & ACLU File Petition

Today, as the ballot counting for Proposition 8 in California continues, Lambda Legal, along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the ACLU, filed a petition in the California Supreme Court on behalf of Equality California and six same-sex couples urging the court to invalidate Prop 8 if it passes. The petition charges that Prop 8 is invalid because the initiative process was improperly used in an attempt to undo the constitution's core commitment to equality for everyone by eliminating a fundamental right from just one group — lesbian and gay Californians. Prop 8 also improperly attempts to prevent the courts from exercising their essential constitutional role of protecting the equal protection rights of minorities. Whatever the outcome of the election or the lawsuit, we and the California Attorney General agree that existing California marriages are valid, and Lambda Legal will work in the courts to protect these marriages if they are attacked.

Seafarers and fishermen of old knew the pragmatic use of a knot. It was tied a certain way to steer the boat, to weather the storm and meet the resistance of the wind and waves. In a storm in the night a properly tied knot can mean survival on board. There are dozens of knots in ancient lore, each having its own spiritual, pragmatic significance. I believe our knots symbolized a covenant of survival.

Companies that promoted anti-family policies have learned the hard way that such policies are bankrupt. K-Mart learned its lesson several years ago. Earlier this week, Rush Limbaugh contended that Senator Barack Obama is an Arab, and that "the last thing he is is African-American." Limbaugh clearly intended "Arab" as a slur - one meant to imply "Muslim" in a shameless use of religion as a political weapon, and despite the fact that not all Arabs are Muslim, or vice versa. Aside from the fact that Obama is not Muslim, you and I know that a candidate's religion is a matter of conscience and personal faith, and should never become a campaign issue.

I've also recently learned that, while Mayor, Sarah Palin wanted a book written by a Baptist minister from the neighboring town of Palmer to be banned from the public library in Wasilla. The book is Pastor, I Am Gay by Howard Bess. Palin now denies trying to have the book banned, but Bess says "This is a small town, we all know each other. People in city government have confirmed to me what Sarah was trying to do." Bess, now a retired American Baptist minister, also says of Palin "She scares me. She's Jerry Falwell with a pretty face" and "At this point, people in this country don't grasp what this person is all about. The key to understanding Sarah Palin is understanding her radical theology."

Now comes word that the recently elected head of the Young Republican Federation Glenn Murphy has abruptly resigned amid allegations that he sexually assaulted a sleeping man at the home of the man’s sister. And, apparently that’s not the first time. Murphy has a prior arrest for sexual battery in 1998.
