Radiohead is not only solely distributing their new album over the net, but enabling consumers to choose their own price.

Choose your own price.

If you work in any intellectual property driven industry, you better think about that for a moment. It may reflect the actual demand model you are about to deal with. As the Net Gens become the dominant demographic in the market, they are more influenced by their peers than institutions, and know if they can't get what they want from institutions they will do it themselves.

Letting businesses choose their own price is a far way away, although I believe inevitable, as we transition to a gift economy, because of the institutionalized irrational selfishness of the corporate individual (feel free to disregard this sentence). But it is very real for consumer markets. Information not only wants to be free, so to does the decisions it informs, which is how information creates value.

Radiohead's "Nude" remix contest spawned many entries. Too bad this one was late.

Though submitted after the recent Radiohead "Nude" remix contest deadline, James Houston's audio / visual re-interpretation of Yorke and Co.'s latest from In Rainbows landed him thousands of emails, a record deal and even prime placement on the Radiohead website. Edited in his bedroom with his dog at feet, this final piece for his degree show has turned into something of a phenomenon.

Houston took the remix elements, and played the vocals through hard drive voice coils while replacing drums with a dot matrix printer, etc.

Earlier this week, comScore released data that said that 62% of Radiohead downloaders don’t pay. While plenty came to the band’s defense, we had no official word on the price people were paying.

In response to purely speculative figures announced in the press regarding the number of downloads and the price paid for the album, the group’s representatives would like to remind people that… it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales.

However, they can confirm that the figures quoted by the company comScore Inc are wholly inaccurate and in no way reflect definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project.

So is comScore “wholly inaccurate”? I’d be willing to buy that they’re not perfectly on, but until I see actual figures, I’ll go with the data I’ve got.

Even if only 38% of those who downloaded the album paid anything for it they still have made well over a million dollars in one month.

SHORTLY after Radiohead released its album “In Rainbows” online in October, the band misplaced its password for Max/MSP, a geek-oriented music software package that the guitarist Jonny Greenwood uses constantly. It wasn’t the first time it had happened, Mr. Greenwood said over a cup of tea at the venerable Randolph Hotel here. As usual Radiohead contacted Max/MSP’s developers, Cycling ’74, for another password. “They wrote back,” Mr. Greenwood said, “‘Why don’t you pay us what you think it’s worth?’”

Well, Radiohead was asking for it. Those are the exact terms on which the band is selling the downloadable version of “In Rainbows”: Buyers can pay zero or whatever they please up to £99.99 (about $212) for the album in MP3 form. Sixteen years and seven albums into the career that has made Radiohead the most widely pondered band in rock, it is taking chances with its commerce as well as its art

Radiohead blew us away with the “donated” sales revenue from its last album “In Rainbows.” The band offered the music for free, and let fans choose how much they’d pay, almost as a tip for the album. What comScore found was that 62% of global users chose not to pay for the album at all.

What’s equally as interesting is the fact that international fans were less likely to pay than US fans. You’d have to do a fairly extensive study to figure out why this may be the case, considering variables such as the native country of the band, the amount of disposable income per capita in various countries around the world, the musical preferences of countries’ citizens, the prevalence of P2P networks as legal options in other countries, etc. So there’s really not much to say in regards to these stats for Radiohead’s album at this particular point.

Yorke: In terms of digital income, we've made more money out of this record than out of all the other Radiohead albums put together, forever — in terms of anything on the Net. And that's nuts. Nothing stays the same for long. I have always wondered whether the pendulum will swing back towards the conservative, or whether we will simply become increasingly liberal, liberated and libertine?

Looking back, history seems to suggest the later, and each subsequent age has been more liberated than the last... Or am I wrong? Is there in fact a cycle at work here? If so, what place and time has been as socially liberal as we are today?

Pop and his offspring head out to the mall dressed in the same outfits: baggy shorts, sneakers, athletic socks and T-shirt, topped by a baseball cap. Diana West, a columnist for The Washington Times, finds nothing amusing about this. In “The Death of the Grown-Up,” she argues that the steadily expanding reach of youth culture over the last half century has brought Western civilization to the brink of disaster.

It’s more than just baseball caps, rock ’n’ roll, blue jeans and four-letter words, although those are bad enough. Narcissistic baby boomers, she writes, have methodically reversed the maturation process, destroyed parental authority, subverted traditional values and imposed a bland, sticky multicultural agenda that leaves the West unable and unwilling to confront its enemies.

Radiohead is thinking about the future again.

Ten years ago, the British band released their landmark album "OK Computer," a masterpiece hailed as visionary for its forecast of a soul-crushing computerized dystopia.

Sounds a little like today's music industry.

On Monday, Radiohead sent shockwaves through the music biz with the announcement that its new album, "In Rainbows," will be released for download from http://www.radiohead.com on Oct. 10. The price? Whatever you choose. You elect how much to pay, be it one cent, $15 or $100. (A special edition box set with a vinyl version and other items is also available for approximately $81.)

After releasing all six of their previous albums with Capitol Records, Radiohead doesn't currently have a record contract. "In Rainbows" will be available as a DRM-free MP3 download.

In spite of Radiohead letting fans pay whatever they like for a CD download of their latest release 'In Rainbows', the Oxford-based band has made quite a mint off the album. While fans only paid about half of what new CDs cost in stores, Radiohead has made nearly $10 million dollars (about £4.8 million) in less than a week.

If what is happening is for real, a revolution in the way audiences receive their music may change the music industry forever. A poll made my Gigwise.com had a total of 3,000 participants saying on average they paid £4 for the album. Multiply that by the 1.2 million copies of the album now on fans' computers, and you get £4.8 million pounds!

Because Radiohead is no longer affiliated with a record label, the vast majority of the 'In Rainbows' profit will go to them, with minimal overheads. Compare this to selling it through an online store (iTunes, Snocap, etc), and they could only see as little as 25% of that profit.
