Brain volume decreases with age at an estimated rate of 1.9 percent per decade, accompanied by an increase in white matter lesions, according to background information in the article. Lower brain volumes and larger white matter lesions also occur with the progression of dementia and problems with thinking, learning and memory. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease; because the brain receives blood from this system, researchers have hypothesized that small amounts of alcohol may also attenuate age-related declines in brain volume.

Although men were more likely to drink alcohol, the association between drinking and brain volume was stronger in women, they note.

Tags: alcohol consumption, brain volume, dementia

<clipSource>http://www.elements4health.com/heavy-drinkers-have-smaller-brains.html</clipSource>

Can Jerry Seinfeld Save Vista?

clipped by: BobbyDelray

Clip Source: blogs.wsj.com

Microsoft is turning to a new spokesman to drum up interest in its Windows Vista operating system: Jerry Seinfeld.

The comedian will star alongside Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in a series of ads meant to counter the popular notion that Vista is a failure, the Journal reports.

What’s the deal with Vista?

<clipSource>http://blogs.wsj.com/biztech/2008/08/21/can-jerry-seinfeld-save-vista/</clipSource>

Why Iditarod sled dogs are superdogs

clipped by: wiccantexan

Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

Study: Athleticism of Alaskan huskies is superior to most other mammals

Alaskan huskies that participate in the grueling Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race must run 1,100 miles while enduring heavy blizzards, temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit and winds up to 60 miles per hour, all of which earn the hearty canines status as the world's premier ultra-endurance animal athletes.

How do they do it? Accompanied by local campaign aides and volunteers, he spent almost an hour knocking on doors and talking to voters.

Crowds gathered on Shrewsbury Street as word got out that Obama was in the neighborhood.

This was perhaps the best kind of debate prep for him, because not all of the conversations were easygoing. One man in particular questioned Obama’s tax plan, telling him that he is about to buy a company that makes more than $250,000 a year.

Obama's position stronger than it looks in current polls.

Second,

given the pattern of new registrations and the apparent strength of the two campaigns' voter mobilization efforts, Sen. Obama seems more likely to benefit than to lose support from unexpected turnout.

Third, the possibility that undecided white voters may, in the end, be unable to bring themselves to vote for Sen. Obama on racial grounds makes his position somewhat more precarious than it would otherwise be. It is very difficult to estimate the importance of the racial factor (that is, the extent to which racial antipathy is not already reflected in current polls), but my guess is that this is less important than the other two factors, both of which seem likely to work in Sen. Obama's favor.

Tags: ezra klein, barack obama, john mccain, larry bartels, survey, poll, polls, elections

<clipSource>http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/ezraklein_archive?month=10&year=2008&base_name=ask_a_political_scientist</clipSource>

McCain-Palin Rhetoric Goes Over the Top

clipped by: Wisco
clipper's remarks: Next up, handing out official McCain-Palin pitchforks and torches at rallies.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain has taken to asking, "Who is the real Barack Obama?" at rallies this week, leading one supporter in Pennsylvania, a blue-collar battleground state to shout back, "he is a bomb."

Chants of "Nobama, Nobama" mingled with cries of "terrorist," as one banner in the crowd declared: "Go ahead, let the dogs out."

The stream of vicious attacks against Obama, who has left McCain trailing in the polls, were ramped at the weekend by Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin who accused the Chicago senator of "palling around with terrorists."

Now when she mentions Obama, some of the crowds' responses have escalated beyond boos and hisses, and there are fears among some observers that the attacks are going too far.

Tags: news

<clipSource>http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Inflammatory_Republican_rallies_raise_concerns_1009.html</clipSource>

Madame Palin Meet Mr. Mirror

clipped by: ratilfar
clipper's remarks: Not for the factually or logically adverse, nor those who believe that reality is an alien (and commie) concept.

Clip Source: www.youtube.com

[Video]

Clip Source: www.youtube.com

[Video]

Tags: olberman, youg turks, video, youtube, special comment, palin, mccain, politics

<clipSource>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxGZ9mc5Rkw</clipSource>

Disgruntled American Seeks Canadian For Political Asylum, Maybe More

clipped by: swampfoxz
clipper's remarks: * IT Professional, skilled with computers, can fix yours.
* Will get whatever job(s) available to help support us.
* From Washington State, appreciates nature.
* Willing to learn French.
* Polite, working on being more humble.
* Hates littering.
* Will pet your cat(s)/dog(s) and tell you how cute it is.
* Enjoys Rush.
* Can fake an interest in hockey.
* Knows the first line to the Canadian National Anthem.
* Will do whatever it takes to get the fuck out of here.

What You're All Aboot:

* Canadian.
* 18-50 year old female.
* Willing to marry me for citizenship.

So there you have it ladies! Even sad songs can make you happy.

I heard this song when I was a little girl and my Dad told me it was about a dog (that probably drowned) and I bawled my eyes out! songs as well. That song that meant everything good
                          with the old girlfriend can make you cry with the opening

Well, I’ll tell you what I see: a loud-mouth, loose-lipped nobody who is drunk on media attention and a quart low in the judgment department. I think both she and her aged "maverick" buddy owe Mr. Obama an apology for this one.

I think this hockey mom/moose skinner fits perfectly into the class war she is helping perpetuate, even though she has none

It would have far more factual validity for Obama, or a surrogate, to publicize the fact that Track, the kid who joined the Army, did so because a judge told him it was that or jail due to his dealing drugs.

the lady has annoyed me because of her ignorance and arrogance

I think the McCain people better lock the lady up again and tell her to zip it, because she is not fit to even ad-lib.

Tags: palin, obama, ayers, weathermen

<clipSource>http://www.wowowow.com/post/loud-mouth-and-loose-lipped-palin-owes-obama-apology-one-margo-howard-117251</clipSource>

Is McCain Fit for the Presidency?

clipped by: reimers
clipper's remarks: Perhaps an old antagonism is involved in McCain's fact-free slander. His most conspicuous economic adviser is Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who previously headed the Congressional Budget Office. There he was an impediment to conservatives, including then-Rep. Cox, who, as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, persistently tried and generally failed to enlist CBO support for "dynamic scoring" that would estimate the economic growth effects of proposed tax cuts.

In any case, McCain's smear — that Cox "betrayed the public's trust" — is a harbinger of a McCain presidency. For McCain, politics is always operatic, pitting people who agree with him against those who are "corrupt" or "betray the public's trust," two categories that seem to be exhaustive — there are no other people. McCain's Manichaean worldview drove him to his signature legislative achievement, the McCain-Feingold law's restrictions on campaigning. Today, his campaign is creatively finding interstices in laws intended to re

Clip Source: jewishworldreview.com

Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama.

Channeling his inner Queen of Hearts, John McCain furiously, and apparently without even looking around at facts, said Chris Cox, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, should be decapitated. This childish reflex provoked the Wall Street Journal to editorialize that "McCain untethered" — disconnected from knowledge and principle — had made a "false and deeply unfair" attack on Cox that was "unpresidential" and demonstrated that McCain "doesn't understand what's happening on Wall Street any better than Barack Obama does."

<clipSource>http://jewishworldreview.com/cols/will092308.php3</clipSource>

Boy wreaks zoo havoc while feeding croc

clipped by: Kelika
clipper's remarks: "The boy was unknown at the center and had "clammed up" when questioned by police on what sparked the rampage, he said.

Neindorf said he was now looking at suing the parents of the pint-sized terror, who could easily have been taken by Terry himself as he fed the croc from a small landing at his enclosure.

"We'll be looking at suing the parents, who were supposedly in control of him at the time," he said."

Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

The parents of a 7-year-old boy who broke into an Australian outback zoo and fed a string of small animals to its resident crocodile are likely to be sued after police said the boy was too young to be held responsible.

A turtle, four western blue tongue lizards, two bearded dragons, two thorny devil lizards and an adult female Spencer's goanna were fed or led into the jaws of a three-foot, 440 pound saltwater crocodile named "Terry."

Security camera footage at the Alice Springs Reptile Center showed the smiling youngster also bludgeoning to death a small blue tongue lizard and two more thorny devils during a half-hour of breakfast-time havoc last Wednesday.

"The fact a 7-year-old can wreak so much havoc in such a short time, it's unbelievable.
