May Do the Trick

A message for those of you with no iPhone or BlackBerry: Your cellphone is smarter than you think.

In fact, your boring old cellphone has enormous potential. Here is a guide to checking your email, looking up information and updating your calendar, just by sending text messages. You can use any cellphone, but you'll need a generous text-messaging plan.

For email, I tested TeleFlip, a free service that lets you send and receive email via text messaging. TeleFlip works with any email account that doesn't require a secure connection to the Web. That applies to all the major Web-based email providers, including Yahoo Mail, Hotmail and Gmail.

Signing up for TeleFlip took me under five minutes. All I needed to enter was my Gmail email address and password, my cellphone number, and a confirmation number that TeleFlip sent to my cellphone -- via text message

One of texting’s most common messages — “Where r u?” — may become a quaint phrase of the past with a new program that lets your friends and associates find out for themselves.

Generally for less than $1, Sniff produces a rough address and map for any participant using the same technology rescuers employ to find wayward hikers who call 911 by cell phone — triangulating the caller’s location based on which cell phone towers are nearby.

Old friends and longtime aides are wringing their hands over Bill Clinton’s post–White House escapades, from the dubious (and secretive) business associations to the media blowups that have bruised his wife’s campaign, to the private-jetting around with a skirt-chasing, scandal-tinged posse. Some point to Clinton’s medical traumas; others blame sheer selfishness, and the absence of anyone who can say “no.” Exploring Clintonworld, the author asks if the former president will be consumed by his own worst self.

It was a wedding straight out of Sex and the City: a rehearsal dinner looking out over the Eiffel Tower from the Trocadero, a garden ceremony and dancing reception in a grand château outside Paris, topped off by a private fireworks display.

The groom was a thirtysomething American lawyer with friends in high places, the bride a dark-eyed designer with social sheen, and the guest list a mix of family and what Noël Coward once called Nescafé Society.
