Today Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in reaction to a statement by Senator John McCain that as President he would continue the Bush Administration’s warrantless wiretapping program:

“I am appalled by Senator John McCain’s reaffirmation of support for the use of warrantless wiretapping on American citizens. Senator McCain has once again chosen to align himself with President George Bush, whose reprehensible spying program on Americans is a grave threat to our Constitution's guarantees of privacy and limited executive power. It is clear that Senator McCain, President Bush, and their Republican allies in Congress will continue to use scare tactics and fear mongering to claim that a president can simply chose to ignore America’s laws. These tactics represent a desperate attempt to distract Americans from the costly war in Iraq, the economy, and their countless other policy failures. “

The CIA has announced it will begin handing over documents to Congress about the destruction of videotapes showing the interrogation of two prisoners held in secret jails. The announcement came after the House Intelligence Committee threatened to subpoena agency officials if they wouldn’t appear before the committee voluntarily. LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 — The state council of the Service Employees International Union publicly threw its weight behind John Edwards’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination on Friday and said it would rally its members here and in other states, including those holding early primaries, to support his campaign.

The union is the largest in California, with 656,000 members. Its backing is a significant achievement for Mr. Edwards, especially if the union is able to extend its organizational ability to the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

Last month, the union’s national board, which represents nearly 1.9 million workers, voted to leave it up to state councils to decide whom to back. On Monday, union leaders said state councils in California, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana Ohio, Oregon, Washington and West Virginia, which represent half of the union’s membership, had endorsed Mr. Edwards.

Maine congressman endorses John Edwards

PORTLAND, Maine --U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud gave his endorsement to North Carolina Sen. John Edwards in his run to be the Democratic presidential nominee in next year's elections

The Maine Democrat said Edwards is the only candidate who has offered real plans to help struggling rural communities and to provide health care coverage for uninsured Americans.

"John Edwards has the courage to tackle problems that other politicians simply ignore, like ending poverty in America and making trade work for working Americans," Michaud said.

Michaud represents Maine's 2nd Congressional District.

Former Gov. Roy Barnes and former Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor held a Capitol reunion of sorts Thursday, getting together for a press conference to support John Edwards' presidential campaign.

Barnes served as governor, with Taylor as his second-in-charge, from 1999 to 2003. Taylor served another four years as lieutenant governor before running unsuccessfully for governor last year.

Joining Barnes and Taylor at the event were several other elected officials, including two African-American state senators, Valencia Seay (D-Riverdale) and Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta). Last week, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton was in Atlanta touting her endorsement from black U.S. Reps. John Lewis.

Barnes said Southern Democrats have too often had to tip-toe around their nominees because they weren't popular in the region. He said that won't be the case with Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina.

Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards has earned the endorsement of the Iowa State Council of the Service Employees International Union.

The endorsement is significant for Edwards, who was stung last week by the national SEIU when leaders said it would not endorse a candidate for the primary elections, letting its members to make their decisions on a state-by-state basis.

Edwards had worked hard to win approval from the union, which claims to be the fastest growing in North America.

HUDSON, N.H. - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has spent two weeks questioning Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's judgment in voting to declare the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.

On Sunday, he questioned her sincerity.

Last month, Clinton was one of 75 senators who voted for a resolution giving the president the authority to call the guards terrorists. She has characterized the vote as a way to gain leverage for U.S. negotiations with Iran, but some of her rivals, including Edwards and Sen. Barack Obama, argue it amounted to giving Bush another blank check to go to war.

Friends of the Earth Action endorses John Edwards for president

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A national environmental organization today is endorsing Democrat John Edwards for president, citing his plan to fight global warming and firm stance against building more nuclear power plants.

Brent Blackwelder, president of Friends of the Earth Action, said the group was particularly impressed by how early in the campaign Edwards laid out environmental proposals. Edward wants to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, push for a global climate change treaty and create 1 million new jobs by investing in clean, renewable energy.

Blackwelder says Edwards has pushed other candidates to either match or improve upon his ideas. He plans to announce the endorsement of Edwards at a house party in Dover.

Friends of the Earth Action is the political arm of Friends of the Earth, which has more than 100,000 members in the United States.

They don't allow prayer in schools, but they allow children to ware crap with evil crap all over it. What the hell is wrong with these people? There needs to be some big changes in this country, or it's going to hell in a hand basket.

The John Edwards campaign responded Thursday to media reports that a Waxahachie High School student was told his T-shirt supporting the Democratic presidential candidate was in violation of the school’s dress code.

In September, Waxahachie High School sophomore Paul T. "Pete" Palmer was told he could not attend class wearing a T-shirt that read “John Edwards 08” and included the candidate’s Web site address.

Pete's parents have challenged the school district’s dress code and want students to have the freedom of political expression.

Pete agrees. "The dress code they have right now is not particularly strict," he said. "It's not all that bad. They need to make exceptions for free speech for political issues because it's a constitutional right."

Edwards attacks 'No Child Left Behind'

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said he would try to level the differences between rich and poor schools in the United States if he is elected.

In a speech at a middle school in Des Moines, Iowa, the former North Carolina senator also attacked the “No Child Left Behind Act,” which he supported as a senator, The Des Moines Register reported. He said that in practice the bill’s provisions have set up inadequate measures of school progress and penalized schools instead of helping them.

Many schools fail to provide a decent education, he said, especially when their students are poor.

"We have to ask ourselves, why are the odds so stacked against so many just because of where they were born?" he said.

Edwards also called for an increase in teacher pay, especially for those who teach in poor districts, and said he would set up an educational West Point to encourage top students to become teachers.
