Wexler: McCain Tramples Constitution with Plans to Continue Bush's Illegal Wiretapping

Today Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in reaction to a statement by Senator John McCain that as President he would continue the Bush Administration’s warrantless wiretapping program:

“I am appalled by Senator John McCain’s reaffirmation of support for the use of warrantless wiretapping on American citizens. Senator McCain has once again chosen to align himself with President George Bush, whose reprehensible spying program on Americans is a grave threat to our Constitution's guarantees of privacy and limited executive power. It is clear that Senator McCain, President Bush, and their Republican allies in Congress will continue to use scare tactics and fear mongering to claim that a president can simply chose to ignore America’s laws. These tactics represent a desperate attempt to distract Americans from the costly war in Iraq, the economy, and their countless other policy failures. “

On August 1st, 2005 the American Conservative reported that Cheney had tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan involved a massive air strike on Iran which included the use of nuclear weapons.

The publication reported that, "The response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States," meaning that any such attack will immediately be blamed on Iran and any evidence to the contrary will be buried.

Dick Cheney has ordered top Neo-Con media outlets, including Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, to unleash a PR blitz to sell a war with Iran from today, according to Barnett Rubin, the highly respected Afghanistan expert at New York University.

President Bush met directly with talk radio idealogues at the White House last year to push the Neo-Con agenda. Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Neal Boortz and Michael Medved (pictured below) amongst others all attended and received their talking points straight from the President's mouth.

Considering the history of the sordid "fake news" scandal, where millions of dollars were used to create pre-packaged government press releases disguised as news, along with the Armstrong Williams farce, it should surprise no one that such "instructions" are now being handed out to prepare the public for another military invasion.

Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Congress should ``proceed very cautiously'' before immunizing telephone companies from lawsuits claiming they illegally helped the government listen to Americans' phone calls after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Companies that cooperated with President George W. Bush's terrorist surveillance program should defend against the lawsuits in court, Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters today in Washington. New surveillance legislation on its way to the House floor doesn't contain a retroactive immunity provision demanded by Bush.

``These are not individual citizens,'' Pelosi said. ``These are major telecom companies with a phalanx of lawyers who understand the Constitution and the law. If they have exposure, the courtroom is the place to go.''

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

President Bush on Wednesday vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have dramatically expanded children's health insurance

The State Children's Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP, is a joint state-federal effort that subsidizes health coverage for 6.6 million people, mostly children, from families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford their own private coverage.

The Democrats who control Congress, with significant support from Republicans, passed the legislation to add $35 billion over five years, allowing an additional 4 million children into the program. It would be funded by raising the federal cigarette tax by 61 cents to $1 per pack.

The president faces a possible rebellion by Republican lawmakers who back the bill.

Texas A&M presidential scholar George Edwards says that lawmakers who stick with the president could pay for it in next year's elections.

But for Bush’s real constituency, the wealthiest layer at the top of American society, there will be no sacrifices at all. Instead, the administration is seeking a tax cut package of over $700 billion, including the abolition of taxation on corporate dividends. Major US corporations are in line to reap hundreds of millions of dollars in profits from the rebuilding of Iraqi infrastructure shattered by the coming US assault. These include the oil construction firm Halliburton, which Vice President Cheney headed prior to joining the Bush administration, and which continues to include Cheney on its payroll.
