Today Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in reaction to a statement by Senator John McCain that as President he would continue the Bush Administration’s warrantless wiretapping program:

“I am appalled by Senator John McCain’s reaffirmation of support for the use of warrantless wiretapping on American citizens. Senator McCain has once again chosen to align himself with President George Bush, whose reprehensible spying program on Americans is a grave threat to our Constitution's guarantees of privacy and limited executive power. It is clear that Senator McCain, President Bush, and their Republican allies in Congress will continue to use scare tactics and fear mongering to claim that a president can simply chose to ignore America’s laws. These tactics represent a desperate attempt to distract Americans from the costly war in Iraq, the economy, and their countless other policy failures. “

clipper's remarks: The revelations show that the White House ignored critics of its policy and encouraged appointments of cooperative counsels at the Justice Department who could be relied on to stretch the law to give the president authority to ignore the Geneva Convention's ban on torture.

There was opposition from both the State Department and the Justice Department. The State Department lawyer, William Taft IV, expressed alarm at the criminality of the practice of torture and the Bush administration's attempt to justify it.

In a lengthy legal opinion, which he sent to the Justice Department on January 11, 2002, and to the White House, he reportedly warned that disregarding the Geneva Conventions was "untenable". He urged them to warn Bush that he would "be seen as a war criminal by the rest of the world".

In its so-called war on terror, the Bush administration has shown an astonishing disregard for the rule of law in its consistent violation of American and international laws banning torture.

The Bush administration's approach, unprecedented in American history, relied on secrecy and deception - shameful attributes that, along with torture, Bush has harshly criticised in other countries which he described as authoritarian and evil.

Bush had famously dismissed, in May 2005, Amnesty International's accusation of war crimes and torture of detainees in US custody as "absurd".

Recent front-page revelations made by the New York Times show that the Bush administration has in fact relied on two secret memos justifying its torture policy.

clipper's remarks: President Bush mounted his surge this past summer (2007) and had the talking heads tell congress and the people of the United States this fall (2007) that it (the surge) was working and that our troops are making progress in lessening the violence in some parts of Iraq. However, newscasters who have been in country for nearly five years now tell a different tale. These newscasters say that the people in some segregated communities who adhere to strict regulations about when to come and go are somewhat safer because we keep troops surrounding those neighborhoods night and day, but this is not freedom. This is strict occupation!

Congress got a message back in the 2006 mid-term elections to stop the war with Iraq, but continually fail to follow through with the wishes of the people who elected them to these high offices. Both, the Senate and the House have passed legislation that would have set a reasonable timetable and provided funding for withdraw of our troops from Iraq. However, President Bush issued numerous threats that would come to fruition if congress failed to provide him with the budget he requested to continue his war in Iraq (and Afghanistan) without any timetables before years end. It now appears that congress heeded his warnings and caved completely in.

The budget set for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for 2007 was $506.9 Billion dollars! That money came and went. This administration after rushing through those funds had the audacity to come back to congress and ask for bridge funds to keep their war going. When push came to shove congress gave it to them.

Rice Faces Subpoena in Espionage Case

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and more than a dozen other current and former intelligence officials must testify about their conversations with pro-Israel lobbyists, a federal judge ruled Friday in an espionage case.

Ellis left open the possibility that the Bush administration may challenge the subpoenas on the grounds they would reveal privileged information. But the judge said his ruling Friday "may trump a valid governmental privilege."

If so, that could force the government to decide whether to allow the testimony or drop the case.

Neither the State Department nor the Justice Department had an immediate comment.

Among those subpoenaed in the case were: former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz; former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage; and Marc Grossman, former undersecretary of state for political affairs.

Don't worry, the White House is telling us. The world's most powerful leader was simply making a rhetorical point. At a White House press conference last week, just in case you haven't heard, President Bush informed the American people that he had told world leaders "if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing [Iran] from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon." World War III. That is certainly some rhetorical point, especially coming from the man singularly most capable of making such an event reality.

A critical question, therefore, is who was the last person to "imprint" the president prior to his public allusion to World War III?

Bush noted that he awaited the opportunity to confer with his defense secretary, Robert Gates, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice following their recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Presidents might veto legislation that is costly, ill conceived, or ineffective, but in this case, most people agree that SCHIP is a very successful program. And therein lies the problem.

The reason that Bush is so opposed to SCHIP is the same reason he was so determined to privatize Social Security, which is that they're both programs that work

"The worst thing is a government program that actually does help people," Krugman continued. "So the SCHIP is a really bad thing, from Bush's point of view, because it works so well. It might lead people to say, well, if we can do this for lower-income children, why can't we do it for lots of other people who need guaranteed health care? So it's the determination, on his part, to do this veto, even though there's a short-term political cost, because they're deathly afraid that people will look at SCHIP and say, gee, actually the government can do some good."
