Wexler: McCain Tramples Constitution with Plans to Continue Bush's Illegal Wiretapping

Today Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in reaction to a statement by Senator John McCain that as President he would continue the Bush Administration’s warrantless wiretapping program:

“I am appalled by Senator John McCain’s reaffirmation of support for the use of warrantless wiretapping on American citizens. Senator McCain has once again chosen to align himself with President George Bush, whose reprehensible spying program on Americans is a grave threat to our Constitution's guarantees of privacy and limited executive power. It is clear that Senator McCain, President Bush, and their Republican allies in Congress will continue to use scare tactics and fear mongering to claim that a president can simply chose to ignore America’s laws. These tactics represent a desperate attempt to distract Americans from the costly war in Iraq, the economy, and their countless other policy failures. “

This is a fascinating image below. When I first saw it I was impressed by what I thought was a good photoshop creation. What do you think is the truth of this image?

As it turns out this is an actual photograph taken by a storm chaser. Sun, rainbow, tornado and hail all colliding in this rarely seen combination. I found this on Astronomy Picture of the Day. They had this to say about this picture.

MINNEAPOLIS — Amy Rice feared for her dog’s life when a pit bull jumped over a fence into her yard and attacked her pooch. So she took matters into her own mouth.

Rice says she bit the pit bull on the nose Friday after trying to pull the dog’s jaws off her Labrador retriever, Ella. The dog had jumped a fence to get into Rice’s northeast Minneapolis yard, and Rice says she feared the pit bull would kill Ella.

Rice says she drew blood when she bit the dog, and her doctor will have to determine whether she should get shots for rabies.

The pit bull was quarantined. Ella is recovering with staples and stitches to her head and a crushed ear canal.

Nor did it matter that the settlement covered a fraction of her expenses and losses. Wal-Mart's healthcare plan clearly states that it gets first dibs on any money recovered by injured employees. Such provisions aren't uncommon in health plans, and Wal-Mart isn't the first to enforce one.

Doing what the law allows isn't the same as doing the right thing, however. The company made itself whole at the expense of a helpless former employee who will never be whole again. Instead of having some resources to improve her care, Shank will receive only the basic services afforded her by Medicaid and Social Security. Nor will the trust fund be in a position to reimburse Medicaid (i.e., taxpayers), which stood to collect any unspent money upon Shank's death.

As chronicled in Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, Shank, a former overnight shelf-stocker for Wal-Mart in southeastern Missouri, was driving her minivan when she was broadsided by a semi and suffered permanent brain damage. Unable to walk without help, she lost the ability to care for herself or interact meaningfully with her family. Now 52, she lives in a nursing home.

Wal-Mart started out as one of the good guys in this story, paying almost $470,000 of her initial medical bills. But three years after Shank's husband sued and settled with the semi driver's employer, the retail giant changed hats. It demanded every penny back, plus interest and legal fees -- more, in fact, than the $417,477 the settlement had placed in a special-needs Medicaid trust fund for Shank's future healthcare expenses.

clipper's remarks: The VW ball is in a private collection. Mr. Fisk, who was born in Vermont in 1970, has made other balls with auto themes: a school bus, a green John Deere tractor, a drab brown U.P.S. truck and a white Mister Softee ice cream truck, complete with lights.

“A U.P.S. guy saw the U.P.S. ball and stopped by the house of the owner,” Mr. Fisk said. “He thought it was a package ready for shipping.”

His spheres come with windows and steering wheels. He does all the work using metal and glass fabrication skills he taught himself. He has also sculptured a street ball, a sphere of asphalt marked with painted dotted lines. Mr. Fisk’s barn ball, with wood painted red and a window, was used for the cover of the Phish album “Round Room.”

IT looks like a Volkswagen Microbus, the sort that starred in last year’s film “Little Miss Sunshine,” somehow squeezed into a sphere six feet in diameter.

The ball is the work of the artist Lars-Eric Fisk of Burlington, Vt., who specializes in sphere-shaped sculpture. His work has been shown in museums including the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Mass., outside Boston, and the Dartmouth College museum.

In the catalog for the DeCordova exhibition, he called the sphere was a “simple, seamless form expressing movement and the concept of endlessness and timelessness without a beginning, without an ending.”

“Everyone gets it,” Mr. Fisk said of his use of the sphere in a recent interview.

He completed the VW ball in 1999. “I don’t know why, but the VW ball keeps surfacing every few years on the Internet,” he said.

Anyone who read or watched The Lord of the Rings might have found themselves envious of Frodo’s Mithril shirt that successfully protected him from a stab wound, might be excited to know they could be able to snag the real life version. Yet another example of science catching up with fantasy, the company Nihon Uni has created a shirt that will protect against stab wounds.

Due to an uprise in stabbings of late night store clerks and even children, they needed a lightweight way to offer a bit more security in your day to day routine. It’s made from a thicker fiber that is three times stronger than the cotton used for an average T-shirt.

It is made from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber, which is equal to the aramid fiber which is used in body armor. Conveniently the shirt is still machine washable.

It will be released in Japan in June in both a T-shirt and long sleeve form. The long sleeve will be sold for $220-590 and the short-sleeved version for $190-522.

New Space Telescope Will Outdistance Hubble

The Hubble Space Telescope has given scientists unprecedented images of the universe. But Hubble is growing older; it's been orbiting Earth for 17 years.

He says the light the James Webb telescope will collect is very faint, from stars that are more than 13 billion light years away.

"And a light year is about six trillion miles, so if you do the math it's a long, long way away," he says.

NASA, along with other space agencies, plans to invest more than $4 billion in building and operating this telescope over its five- to 10-year lifetime. In 2013, if all goes well, the James Webb Space Telescope will head out to its lonely outpost in the blackness of space.

Next 'Great Pyramid' made in Germany?

clipper's remarks: On Sunday, the group presented a stone prototype of the Great Pyramid at a Great Pyramid Festival in Streetz, a small village north of Dessau.

Pritzker-winning Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas is set to lead the jury for choosing a final design for the project, according to several reports. Students under Heiko Holzberger at Weimar Bauhaus University in Germany conducted a technology feasibility study that concluded the project is viable, according to the Great Pyramid Web site.

The project has been given starter funding by the "Future of Labor" program of the government-backed German Federal Cultural Foundation.

As part of the group's business plan, the structure would be built up and out incrementally so that stones are added only as people buy placement in the pyramid.

A group in Dessau, Germany, has received funds and famed architect Rem Koolhaas as an adviser in its quest to build the world's largest structure.

Dubbed a "monument for all of us" the new "Great Pyramid," which is estimated would take about 30 years to complete, would be about 1,900 feet tall and 10 times larger than the Great Pyramid of Egypt, according to the Great Pyramid's Web site.

Instead of being a monument to only a few individuals, Germany's Great Pyramid would be a communal tomb open to anyone regardless of nationality or denomination. It would offer burial space in the form of a "tomb container with ashes of the deceased" and engraved "memorial stones" with time capsules to store personal memorabilia.

A burial spot will cost about $960 (700 euros), Jens Thiel, an economist and one of the Friends of the Great Pyramid leaders, told U.K. construction magazine
