NEW YORK (AFP) -

Cate Blanchett will play Bob Dylan in his "androgenous phase" in a new biopic of the great poet-songwriter's life, it was announced, as Dylan turned 65.

But even as he shows up everywhere in books, films and even a Broadway musical, Dylan, who has sought seclusion and mystery all his life, remains as enigmatic as ever.

And on Dylan's birthday, the Hollywood press reported that Blanchett would be among several actors -- also including "Brokeback Mountain" star

Heath Ledger and Richard Gere -- to portray the great American folksinger in a film.

'Chicken Little' reviews spark few B.O. concerns

LOS ANGELES/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The debut on Friday of "Chicken Little," the first fully computer animated movie by the Walt Disney Co, was greeted with mixed reviews that industry experts said would not affect the younger audiences the film is aimed at.

Stock options trading, however, was active for Pixar Animation Studios Inc showing a range of speculation about how the performance of "Chicken Little" would affect ongoing Disney/Pixar talks over a new film distribution pact.

Disney's partnership with Pixar, in which it has shared box office grosses of $3.2 billion since 1995 from movies like "Finding Nemo," expires next year. Pixar wants to pay its new distributor a flat fee instead of sharing profits.

Industry watchers believe it is crucial for Disney to show that it can compete in computer animation on its own without relying on Pixar's blockbusters to shore up the Disney brand name in the film animation arena it once dominated.

"Chicken Little" reviews ranged from "a consistently amusing, often inspired family romp" in The Hollywood Reporter to "a terrible movie" in The New York Times.

Still, industry analysts expect the movie to take in $30 million to $35 million in ticket sales during its first weekend, and one said the film must reach $200 million at North American box offices to be considered a hit for Disney.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co Inc, said the lukewarm response was unlikely to have any affect on the film's first weekend.

"The target audience doesn't read reviews and, moreover, they don't care," he said. "If a child is aware of this movie opening and a parent reads a poor review and the kid still wants to go, they are going to see the movie."

Apple sells a million videos in new service

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer on Monday said its iTunes online service has sold a million videos in under 20 days, sending shares up almost 5 percent.

iTunes, the most popular online music store, began selling about 2,000 music videos and episodes of ABC's "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" for $1.99 (1.12 pounds) on October 12.

The debut coincided with the launch of a new generation of Apple's iPod digital music player that can play video on its 2.5-inch color screen.

Technology, media and Wall Street analysts are eyeing Apple's performance for validation that a market for legal downloading of videos exists.

Topping the list of big sellers were music videos by

Michael Jackson, Fatboy Slim and Kanye West, as well as episodes of ABC shows.

"Selling one million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests there is a market for legal downloads,"

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, said in a statement. "Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings."

At the service's launch, Walt Disney's ABC was the only nonmusic programming provider aside from Jobs' Pixar Animation Studios, which is also providing short films for the service.

City Investigating Source Of Sweet Smell In Manhattan

In a city full of foul odors, there’s one that's been getting a lot of attention and remains a mystery Friday.

Calls have been pouring in to the city's 311 hotline and to 911 since Thursday night from Manhattan residents wondering just what the smell is.

Many describe it as smelling like maple syrup. Other say it smells like flavored coffee or roasted nuts.

NY1 has been receiving calls from as far south as Lower Manhattan and as far north as Harlem.

"It started at work about 8:30 Thursday night,” said one witness to the smell. “I was at the computer and I felt like, I don't even know. Maybe someone had some maple syrup and they were typing away and I was typing and it got on me somehow and I was laying in bed last night and I felt like I had maple syrup in my nostrils."

"I have no idea where it came from,” said another New Yorker who smelled the mystery odor. “I thought it was like a baker was making sugar or something and they left it burning."

Officials from the Office of Emergency Management have been running tests all night to try to figure out just what the smell is.

A spokesman says air samples aren't showing anything hazardous, the source of the smell is still not clear.
