They are being trained as soldiers of GOD and told that Harry Potter is evil and are given a cardboard cutout of George W. Bush to "lay their hands on", its down right disturbing! But a good insight to the scary reality of whats going on in the life of these fundamental Christians.

If the mayor’s taut description of the extended blackout yesterday captured his own feeling of powerlessness — “It is what it is” — it did not even begin to describe the frustration of Queens residents like Monica Trevino.

What it was for Ms. Trevino, 35, was the possibility of another workweek of sponge baths using boiled water, with no food in the house, and with an increasingly edgy puppy.

“We would put the radio on when we went to work to keep the dog quiet,” she said yesterday, while getting a haircut in the dark at a Ditmars Boulevard salon. “But with no power, we have no radio.”

Ms. Trevino is one of thousands of Queens residents who have awakened each day for the last week hoping the lights would be back on, only to find themselves still in the dark. This morning, many of them will again wake up sweaty and still tired. They will sponge themselves off or take another cold shower, eat what the heat hasn’t spoiled and head off to begin another week of work, not knowing how much longer the emergency will all last.

While the weather was cooler yesterday, it had been a week of sultry nights and little sleep, ruined food and restless children, no television and dirty clothes. Some people have taken to their cars for respite, while others plunge into a cold bath for relief.

Monica set to wreak havoc

SEVERE tropical cyclone Monica is set to wreak havoc on the Northern Territory coast, with its core wind gusts expected to clock 320kph near Arnhem Land today or tomorrow.

The cyclone, which has been upgraded to category five, has Aboriginal communities in its path.

It is expected to generate dangerous winds within the next six to 12 hours in the Nhulunbuy region, NT emergency services say.

Coastal and island communities between Port Roper and Goulburn Island have been alerted about the cyclone warning.

A cyclone watch has extended to Cape Hotham, including Cape Don and Melville Island.

At 10pm (CST) last night, Monica was moving north-west at 10kph and was about 205km east of Nhulunbuy and 320 km north-east of Alyangula.

The system is expected not to lose any force as it moves across the northern Gulf of Carpentaria.

Gales with gusts up to 120kph are expected to develop between Cape Shield and Elcho Island, including Nhulunbuy, early this morning.

Dangerous high tides are expected to cause extensive flooding between Groote Eylandt and Elcho Island today.

Police have advised residents they can use the public emergency shelter at Gove Hospital's western end.

"Make your decision quickly as winds are expected to reach a dangerous level," police warned residents.

Girl's old heart is back to life

A YOUNG heart transplant patient is looking forward to going back to school after undergoing a pioneering operation which brought her own heart back to life.

Hannah Clark, 12, had her heart reconnected in February, 10 years after undergoing a complicated transplant operation involving the insertion of a donor second heart.

While her own heart, which had stopped working properly because of severe inflammation, was left dormant in her body, the new “piggyback” heart took up the work of pumping blood around her body. But a routine visit to a doctor last November revealed that her immune system was starting to reject the donor organ, and cardiologists agreed to attempt the reconnection of her old heart. The procedure was carried out by surgeons advised by Sir Magdi Yacoub, the renowned heart specialist, who came out of retirement at the request of Hannah’s parents. Paul and Elizabeth Clark, of Mountain Ash, South Wales, said yesterday that surgeons at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London were initially reluctant to remove the donor heart and reconnect the dormant one because they said that it had never been done before.

Weeks later, the transplant team agreed to perform the operation and Sir Magdi provided surgeons with his expertise. The professor performed Hannah’s original transplant operation 10 years ago when she was 2. That operation saved her life. She had cardiomyopathy, which made her heart double the size it should have been. Doctors had been ready to provide Hannah with weeks of intensive care, but found that she recovered quickly and was discharged from hospital in less than a week.

Cribs with more than 2-3/8 inches between crib slats or cut-outs on the headboard or footboard present suffocation and strangulation hazards. Dealing Dogs

clipper's remarks: I saw parts of the documentary last night on Anderson Cooper, it's about the horrific treatment of dogs by Class B dog dealers, who buy and sell these dogs for medical research. It's an important documentary, and although it will be heartbreaking to watch, I hope everyone does. It's on HBO tonight at 10pm. Just so we can all be aware of and understand what these poor animals go through at the hands of these disgusting people and how important it is to have tougher animal rights laws. I am continually amazed by the atrocities human beings are capable of committing, either on other humans or on defenseless animals. Sometimes (actually a lot of the time lately) I am ashamed to be part of the human race.

LA vegan sues McDonald's after dairy, wheat disclosure

LOS ANGELES - A professed vegan has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit claiming McDonald's Corp. misled consumers into thinking its french fries are free of dairy and wheat products.

Nadia Sugich of Los Angeles said in the Wednesday filing that she "would have never purchased or consumed the french fries if she had known they contain dairy and were not vegan."

The suit, which alleges unfair business practices by Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald's, comes days after the company acknowledged that wheat and dairy ingredients are used to flavor the its fries. The company had said until recently that its fries were free of gluten and milk or wheat allergens.

Sugich sued on behalf of California consumers who avoid dairy or wheat products because of moral, philosophical or health concerns, and have bought McDonald's fries within the past four years. She is asking for the customers to be reimbursed for their french fry purchases in the filing, among other requests.

McDonald's representatives did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment on the suit.

The company has felt the heat over its fries before. McDonald's paid $10 million in 2002 to settle a lawsuit by vegetarian groups after it was disclosed that its fries were being cooked in beef-flavored oil more than a decade after insisting that it was starting to use pure vegetable oil.

It paid another $8.5 million in February 2005 to settle a suit by a nonprofit advocacy group that accused the company of misleading consumers by announcing that it was changing its cooking oil, then delaying the switch.

THE country's most celebrated Kiwi, Russell Crowe, left Canberra without his Australian citizenship yesterday after a day of speculation about when he'll officially become an Aussie.

A live-to-air citizenship ceremony for the Oscar-winning actor on the eve of Australia Day was called off because formalities were not able to be organised in time.

Crowe, who was born in New Zealand, was due to officially become an Aussie at the Australia Day concert on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday night.

But the ceremony - set to be telecast live on Channel 10 as part of the concert coverage - was canned at the last minute.

"The producers did look into it as part of the telecast but the Government wasn't able to facilitate the process in time," a Ten spokeswoman said yesterday.

"He's keen but they couldn't do it in time.

There are obviously certain protocols that need to be adhered to."

Crowe, who headlined the concert with his band The Ordinary Fear Of God, was spurred on by the crowd of 35,000 who chanted "go Rusty, go" to encourage him to swear his allegiance to the country he grew up in.

The Hollywood heavyweight told Ten he would officially become an Australian "within the next few weeks".

Busy Crowe left Canberra on his private plane yesterday and the aircraft is sure to get a workout in coming days.

He heads to Coffs Harbour to stage his annual seven-a-side league tournament on Saturday before racing off to Tamworth to play at the Golden Guitar Awards that night.

I will later regret having ever typed these words, but here goes: Stephen Colbert was right. Truthiness reigns.

Last year, the Comedy Central host eschewed truth for “truthiness”: that which might not be literally true but just feels too good to resist. (In true truthiness form, the word itself not only wasn't coined by Colbert, but has been around since before Mark Twain invented fib-happy Huck Finn. That only made Colbert defend it even harder.)

So when Oprah struck back Thursday at her disgraced book-club golden boy James Frey for the factual holes in his memoir, "A Million Little Pieces," it was a small (and belated) but bold nudge back out of the proud halls of truthiness.

“I really feel duped,” Oprah told a sheepish-looking Frey, “but more importantly I feel that you betrayed millions of readers.”

She offered an honest apology. And at first glance, it seemed like a bold turnaround from a woman who gave Larry King a jingle two weeks ago to defend Frey's mendacious ways, saying that the one-time drug addict “stepped out of that history to be the man he is today” — a bestselling author with a tenuous grasp on what the “non” in “nonfiction” could possibly mean.

But let's not get too excited here. Oprah's success has always been built on defending the obvious (philanthropists good, philanderers bad). By endorsing Frey, she not only backed the wrong horse but in fact picked a donkey to win the third at Belmont, so after a long stretch of trying to avoid that fact, it was inevitable she would have to reverse course and give Frey his comeuppance.
