1. Where does Halloween come from?

Our modern celebration of Halloween is a descendent of the
ancient Celtic fire festival called "Samhain". The word
is pronounced "sow-in", with "sow" rhyming
with cow.

5. What about the aspects of "evil" that we associate
with the night today?

The Celts did not have demons and devils in their belief system.
The fairies, however, were often considered hostile and dangerous
to humans because they were seen as being resentful of men taking
over their lands. On this night, they would sometimes trick
humans into becoming lost in the fairy mounds, where they would
be trapped forever. After the coming of the Christians to the
Celtic lands, certain of the folk saw the fairies as those angels
who had sided neither with God or with Lucifer in their dispute,
and thus, were condemned to walk the earth until judgment day.(3)
In addition to the fairies, many humans were abroad on this
night, causing mischief. since this night belonged neither to one
year or the other, Celtic folk believed that chaos reigned and
the people would engage in "horseplay and practical
jokes".(4) This served also as a final outlet for high
spirits before the gloom of winter set in.

6. What about "trick or treat"?

During the course of these hijinks, many of the people would
imitate the fairies and go from house to house begging for
treats. Failure to supply the treats would usually result in
practical jokes being visited on the owner of the house. Since
the fairies were abroad on this night, an offering of food or
milk was frequently left for them on the steps of the house, so
the homeowner could gain the blessings of the "good
folk" for the coming year. Many of the households would also
leave out a "dumb supper" for the spirits of the
departed.(5) The folks who were abroad in the night imitating the
fairies would some- times carry turnips carved to represent
faces. This is the origin of our modern Jack-o-lantern.

Tags: halloween, trick or treat, samhain, holiday, origins, history, religion, pagan, dead, demons, fairies, jack-o-lantern

<clipSource>http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/5452/hallorig.html?200630</clipSource>

The Politics of Smurfing

clipped by: haraya

Clip Source: dir.yahoo.com

A survey by In-Stat says that US and Canadian consumers believe that they cannot live without broadband. For someone who has been champion the speedy connections for a while, this does come as a great bit of news, though it does seem obvious.

According to the survey, nearly 72% of all leading-edge BB households in North America already have a cable service bundle. Don’t take that stat too seriously - leading edge - is bound to create confusion. We don’t know what it really means. Cable’s share of broadband market is around 57% in the US. Of course people have a “cable service bundle.” Try buying cable broadband without television package!

The survey also shows that that 85% of the broadband household segments favor the quadruple play. They favor it - of course, because who wouldn’t want a single bill, and single point of failure: I keep forgetting to send in the check all the time. However, in order for four-play to work, the solutions have to be simple and easy to use.

Despite all that, the fact that we are thinking about broadband as our most important communication service - that is good news.

It must be on dozens of videotapes I have of old TV shows. I remember this like it aired yesterday, even though it's 20 years old. It's a Heinz ketchup commercial, with an-oh-so-hip-in-an-80s-way guy tilts a bottle of ketchup on the roof of a building, then walking all calm and cool down the stairs to the street and getting a hot dog in his hand just before the thick, rich ketchup falls from the bottle. He even gets the girl at the end! Oh, and the dude went on to have a role in a TV show you might have heard of. (And the music! "Jane's Getting Serious!" Whoa, flashback.)

Tags: matt leblanc, joey, video, heinz, 80s

<clipSource>http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/08/10/how-you-doin-ketchup/</clipSource>

Radiohead star removes Blair comments

clipped by: anonymology
clipper's remarks: I wonder why too.

Clip Source: www.nme.com

Fan conspiracies fly as to the reason why

Radiohead's Thom Yorke has taken down his post that called for Tony Blair's resignation.

The so-called invisibility cloak, created by Oleg Gadomsky, is called “The method of conversion of optical radiation” in the patent.

Gadomsky had been long experimenting on nanoparticles of gold. Thus, he invented a sub-micron stratum of microscopical colloid golden particles that makes an object placed behind it invisible for an observer.

This is a big one. Here's a sample of what's new.

Brand new design. Lots of changes...hope you like the new look and layout!

Only clips that are under 2,000 characters can be popped. We believe in the power of clip-size portions of information as a new, enjoyable way to consume information about more topics in less time. We're not exactly sure what it should be, but we feel there needs to be some kind of definition of "clip-size". For now, we're going to try 2,000 characters (you can still clip whatever you want, but to get popped it needs to be clip-size).

By default, comments no longer shoot a clip to the top. However, if you want to keep up with the latest comments, change your sorting options at the bottom of the Clip Exchange.

Check out the new clip-scroll at the bottom of the Clip Exchange. We think this should make it much easier and quicker to see what's available on the site.

There are now 4 main topics in the header. Each contains a drop-down menu with 10 related tags. You can set these to whatever topics interest you by clicking the "customize" link in the drop-down.

On the right side of the header are buttons that let you link to any of your favorite clippers or tags from anywhere on the site.

We hope you like the new site!!!
