Teenagers who are gay or bisexual are more than three times as likely to attempt suicide as other youth, according to a Massachusetts study reported this month in The Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. Young men are at particular risk, the report found.

"I said, 'Gay is not about fashion, being rich, drag queens or queer or the color pink. What gay is about is love, self-happiness, unity, contentment, emotions.' Gay is a lot of things. I'm gay, but gay is not what I'm about. Gay is just a part of me."

A Briton, traveling through Dubai on his way to England, was arrested and sentenced to 4 years in jail, for having a microscopic piece of cannabis stuck to the bottom of one of his shoes. Keith Brown by name, this guy was stopped while he was walking through the Dubai airport and searched with high tech equipment.

The search revealed a piece of cannabis on the bottom of one of his shoes, too small to be seen with the naked eye, weighing only 0.003 grams.

With their zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drugs, UAE did this kind of thing before. Just to show you how insane this is, another man was thrown in jail in the past for having in his possession three poppy seeds, left from a lunch he had before he left England.

Another man that had in his pocket a similar speck of cannabis last November is still waiting for his sentence.

Ever read a book (required or otherwise) and upon finishing it thought to yourself, "Wow. That was terrible. I totally feel dumber after reading that."? I know I have. Well, like any good scientist, I decided to see how well my personal experience matches reality. How might one do this?

Well, here's one idea.

Get a friend of yours to download, using Facebook, the ten most frequent "favorite books" at every college

These ten books are indicative of the overall intellectual milieu of that college.

Download the average SAT/ACT score for students attending every college.

Books <=> Colleges <=> Average SAT Scores

Plot the average SAT of each book, discarding books with too few samples to have a reliable average.

Yes, I'm aware correlation ≠ causation. The results are hilarity incarnate regardless of causality.

What sets his 44-year-old heart racing is some new figure expressing American excess and neglect—the number of disposable batteries manufactured by Energizer every year (6 billion) or plastic beverage bottles used every five minutes (2 million) or children without health insurance (9 million). Think of him as the unofficial artist of the Harper’s Index.

The Sahara, the Gobi, the Chihuahuan--all are great deserts. But what about the South Pacific's subtropical gyre? This "biological desert" within a swirling expanse of nutrient-starved saltwater is the largest, and least productive, ecosystem of the South Pacific. Together with the subtropical gyres in other oceans, biological deserts cover 40% of Earth's surface. But their relative obscurity may be about to change. Researchers are reporting that the ocean's biological deserts have been expanding, and they are growing much faster than global warming models predict.

All of the biological deserts had grown, except the South Indian Ocean's. The total expansion was 6.6 million square kilometers or 15%, and it happened as the shallow waters of the gyres were warming. "We're seeing this pattern in each of the four ocean basins," says Polovina.

Amsterdam, Netherlands — The latest Greenpeace ranking of electronic manufacturers' recycling and toxic content policies has a couple of surprises: a previously low ranked Chinese company leaps to the number one spot, and Apple stays in last place.

Sony-Ericsson not only took up our demand to eliminate (take a deep breath and say this fast) brominated fire retardants and polyvinyl chloride -- they're eliminating beryllium and phthalates too. And Chinese manufacturer Lenovo has jumped from last place to the middle of the pack to top dog in six months: all they need to do for a perfect 10 is to get a green product on the market.

In the 25 March issue of Science, a team led by Mary Schweitzer of North Carolina State University in Raleigh describes finding flexible and elastic blood vessels, and possibly intact cells, in the 68 million-year-old skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex.

The skeleton was excavated in 2003 from the Hell Creek Formation of Montana by co-author Jack Horner's crew from the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. Back in the lab, Schweitzer and her technician demineralized the fragments by soaking them in a weak acid. As the fossil dissolved, transparent vessels were left behind. "It was totally shocking," Schweitzer says. Branching vessels also appeared in fragments from a hadrosaur and another Tyrannosaurus skeleton. Many of the vessels contain red and brown structures that resemble cells. And inside these are smaller objects similar in size to the nuclei of the blood cells in modern birds.
